A scripted random event that may or may not have been intended by the developers. A source of much unintentional comedy & frustration. An example would be the Imperial foresters fighting each other over deer. Another would be a tribe chieftain getting kidnapped by UFO's in Spore.
In games, the player is usually the ambushee, not the ambusher, but certain multiplayer, stealth and open-world games give players a chance to try this sneaky tactic themselves.
When characters make conversation during normal gameplay, rather than a dialog-focused scene.
A distinct and predictable pattern of attacks or movement a boss takes. This can be based in reaction to a player's actions or simply a stringent script the boss adheres to.
AI Bots are computer-controlled game characters that substitute for characters that are otherwise typically played by a human, and are most commonly found in multiplayer games.
Hey, why are we fighting? Let's sit down and talk this thing out.
A Directed Escape is an interactive gameplay sequence where the player is unable to successfully fight back or otherwise survive, and is forced to flee to the next checkpoint to resume normal play.
The horseshoe is a simple way of designing rooms so that it's more likely the player will pay attention to their surroundings.
An in-engine cinematic is a type of cutscene that is rendered in real time using the game's graphics engine.
A cutscene (usually using the in-game engine) which allows the user to contribute to or modify the action- such as changing camera angle, zooming in and out, or being able to move the player character around actors playing a scripted sequence.
A method of attempting to scare the player by the sudden unexpected occurrence of an event - often accompanied by some sort of audio sting.
A small, closed-off area in a game containing enemies that opens at some trigger point. Often used to surprise the player, or as an alternative to spawning enemies out of thin air.
When monsters in a game can turn on each other after an accidental injury and fight to the death instead of focusing on the player, or when some of the player's enemies also hate each other, and will attack each other on sight.
This character has been sacrificed by the game designers to serve as a warning or amusement (probably both). These are the non-player characters who die at the beginning of the game or level.
A Scripted Death is a moment when the player is taken out of control resulting in the characters death
A staircase sequence consists of the player ascending or descending a stairwell for an extended period of time, perhaps a minute or more. These are often presented to create a vertical box of movement, with limited mobility to avoid hazards.
