The name "Vegetto" comes from combing Vegeta with Kakarotto (the Japanese pronunciation of Kakarot). His name is translated as "Vegerot" in the VIZ manga translation to make it work with the English pronunciation. The Funimation dub goes with the Japanese pronunciation but spells it "Vegito".

Early Jeff: "I hope waiting for Goku to win over and over isn't the entire series."

Later Jeff: "Gohan is just Goku again with the audience waiting for him to finish powering up to win the fight."

Also later Jeff: "Having Gohan show up and win again is the only way to end this right."

The game was rigged from the start. The show was screwed no matter how it ended!

May be getting ahead of myself here, but I really hope they jump into original Dragon Ball after this run ends instead of going straight into Super. Even if they don't keep the podcast going by that point, which I'd totally understand, it seems important to get the context of everything before diving even deeper into the later stuff.

Maybe just because I seem to be in the minority, apparently, who thinks Super is pretty bad, tbh.

Weird that they have forgotten that Videl is a regular human and that Krillin is superhuman.

Jeff's right, Gotenks sucks.

Moreover he sucks in the same exact way for the whole of these five episodes, which makes it especially tiring.

Vegeta's overconfidence in the Cell saga allowing Perfect Cell to form, isn't even really the same. His pride makes him fuck up, then he gets wrecked and realizes the gravity of the situation. Gotenks, who had dozens of episodes of build up, aggressively pushes the envelope in such a needless way, way more often, and way more obnoxiously.

I also agree that Gohan coming to take this would be a naturally more appropriate closing arc. But I'm preeeeeeetty happy with how it all goes down too.

Also, this episode makes me really doubt Dan's cool guy thing.

I figured Jeff would hate Gotenks. I couldn't tell where Dan would fall on Gotenks, but Dan liking Gotenks actually makes a whole lot more sense than I realized at first.

I think that an episode of Gotenks's antics would have been cool. Here's the joke, now let's get back to something good. Instead, we get assaulted with Gotenks for way too long.

Pretty much expected Jeff's reaction to Gotenks. And for good reason, he's terrible.

Surprised by Dan, but then I Realized, Dan loves Gotenks because he's a troll, and even though dan is more "open-minded" these days, he did spend years trolling fans of anime or Mobas or What-have-you for giggles.

Jeff isn't wrong about Gohan taking up the mantle and becoming a man as a natural series end point. It's just that the original canonical ending was the Cell saga, and that was exactly what happened there. They are in for a few more surprises in the Buu saga.

Damn it Dan, everyone knows the reason the man on fire was on fire was because young Psycho Mantis was lending his pyrokinetic powers to Volgin (somewhat unwillingly, as Mantis was easily controlled by strong emotions). That's why when Mantis sees Eli and switches sides, Volgin immediately goes out and just stands like an enormous turd to get stepped on by Sahalanthropus.

I MEAN COME ON IT'S ALL SO SIMPLE.

I get the point of him but I agree with Jeff on how much of a horrible slog this run of episodes was.

The big nose is a Japanese thing if someone is getting their ego stroked and feel proud. It's not the only time it happened in DBZ nor in the Buu saga: fat buu did it when SSJ3 Goku conplimented him. It's on the same level as sneezing when someone is talked about.

To say it's out of place or doesn't belong in anime or DB with such short term memory and lack of cultural understanding to grasp at straws to find reason to criticize an excellently written character is sad.

Yes, excellent. Goten and Trunks are some of the finest examples lf children written how children act while still being entertaining and having distinct personalities. None of this bland telepathetic superintellegent tropes western media loves to put on kids. Flawed, emotional kids who simultaenously provide humor, plot progession, and foreshadowing (masked man alluding to fusion, their pissing contest going on when Majin Vegeta and Goku have their dick measuring contest).

Not liking a character for who they are rather than how they develop or serve the story mechanically is a sign of effective writing. This mistake of passing off dislike of character as objectively bad writing is an all too common fallacy, such as with people's hate of Ashley Williams in Mass Effect 1.

I'm glad Jeff mentioned how unpleasant this Gotenks and Super Buu fight is to watch, because this exact stretch is where I ditched the show in the original run and is the main reason why I say the Buu saga is kind of bad, despite how good the high points are.

The villian just lost all his personality, and on top of that we're supposed to cheer for the Scrappy Doo of sayians for way too long, in a way that doesn't even advance the story. It sucks so, so fucking much.

It's very classic Dan to enjoy a character because they're insufferable.

Toriyama never said that he intended the series to end with the Cell arc. That is just one of numerous false fan rumors that have circulated the internet for years. It's true that Toriyama does not plan ahead but that doesn't mean that he intended the series to end with Cell or Freeza. It's just baseless speculation. Similarly Gohan was never really intended to become the main character.

I love that Jeff & Dan's Dragon Ball knowledge solely revolves around themselves, which leads to funny power level talk like Jeff thinking Videl is anywhere near Krillin's level.

@humanity: I was about say, "Thst's totally Dan" , but he did explain it pretty eloquently when be essentiallysaid, "Gotenks is super shitty and arrogant, but also very believably written because really, *what would you expect when you give already-powerful pre-teen kids even more power*?"

@tetra4: You really seem to be taking any criticism of DBZ very personally.

17 minutes until they even start talking about DBZ. This is a great episode.

People who don't like the Buu saga or Gotenks don't like fun.

Also pretty much the entire arc of Super is Goku being incredibly stupid and getting everyone in trouble because he want to fight things so get ready for that.

I finally realized I never finished the Buu saga. I never saw the Mr. Satan and Buu home life episodes. Never saw Gotenks actually become Gotenks. I don't remember where I fell off, but I guess it's time I actually watch these episodes.

It so baffling when Jeff says "It's like someone decided to write jokes." Dragon Ball is a comedy. The Freiza and Cell saga are exceptions.

This was a pretty enjoyable episode with all the back & forth. I love how the comments are still on the same Toriyama gossip that i read during episode 1 of ASG.

I rate this 5 out of 7 dragonballs.
