Until Jan talked about it in this very episode, I too thought that the Doobie Brothers were saying “Beach Boys.” My entire perception of reality has been shaken.

Quality starfield discussion guys, bravo. Backalar talking about what people are saying online and Grubb saying he just didn't want to talk about it because everyone has made up thier minds?? And the podcast jan refrenced where they talk about it has unlistenable audio quality from a hotel room.

Whatever its just fucking insane the amount of time spent on certain games and then just fart out this content. And still no one has spent 5 seconds talking about blasphemous 2. If it was Nintendo or marvel related maybe Jan would have given a fuck but alas.

@beyondstrange: living in rural Canada for much of my life, and having multiple family members in various stages of local country- music involvement, I've heard that song a bazillionty trillion times, but I couldn't tell you a single thing about it. I couldn't tell you any of the lyrics, I didn't know it was a Doobie Brothers song, I don't know any other Doobie Brothers songs, I don't know anything about the Doobie Brothers. It's like everything about this song was incepted out of me. Reverse osmosis.

I dunno if anyone is gonna read this but:

Japanese companies have a notorious desire to keep all their inventions and technology "inside" their company. There's a cute name for it but I forget atm. It's one of the reason it's been so hard in the FGC to get Rollback netcode in fighting games. They had really good RB back in the Ps3 era (GGPO in the old SF3 re-release) but its only been within the last year that games have started to FINALLY use it. In that time, there were Japanese game companies that have tried to invent their OWN rollback netcode and most of the time they failed. Tekken 7 has been a recent example of "functional but not as good as normal RB" online matchmaking. It stems from those companies wanting to take control of every aspect of their product and very rarely license out tech.

Hey Jan, Carrie Underwood didn't finish in third place of American Idol Season 2. She won Season 4.

The Unity fees are not that surprising if you researched who are the majority shareholders. It's a couple of private equity (PE) companies focusing on acquiring software companies (Silver Lake, Sequoia, and Thoma Bravo involved in there somewhere) who are obsessed with annual recurring revenue (ARR). So these PEs force all of their portfolio companies to force their customers onto "cloud native" software to then force the payments into subscription-style fees where you have to keep paying in order to continue using their products. And as a result, generating ARR instead of one time payments or only paying for upgrades. So Unity finding a way to generate a continual fee for a released game isn't surprising given the infinite greed of leveraged buyout (LBO) firms aka PEs.

Isn't that because those were made by Iron Galaxy, and they implemented GGPO because they're really good at both fighting games and tech?

They did a lot of quality rereleases in that era, which is how they ended up taking over Killer Instinct when Double Helix got bought by amazon (RIP)

It’s funny that DIB got all freaked out about the fate of Earth in Starfield because that was my 4 year old’s exact reaction. She got really quiet and after a while said “I didn’t want Earth to get messed up” in a very sullen voice. Me neither, kid.

I'll say that Defunctland did an EXCESIVELY INDEPTH (100 minutes) video essay diving into the history of line management and bypass/standby/fastpass at Disney parks. He even did an analysis of "is it better or worse with Fastpass?" (where I have the linked queued too). And yeah, the "you need to know to get the most" and Genie+ stuff is a whole thing.

@cozmicaztaway: Oh they definitely were good at both those things, yes. But from my understanding they were always willing to lease out GGPO as an online match solution but were rarely taken up on it. Which is a shame.

Did anyone catch what game they said was like a milk carton? LOL

Also, glad Dan could make it on, never sure if he works here anymore or not.

Day late commenting, but I did about a 4.5 hour road trip today, and I really appreciated the extra hour of chat. Great show this week.

Y'all must not be content being "blacklisted" by *just* Nintendo, and wish to add Guerrilla Games / Sony Playstation to that list, with how bafflingly and unnecessarily hard you guys routinely shit on the Horizon franchise, whenever it's brought up on the podcast.

A Wii and DS game? Kirby's Epic Yarn was released on 3DS. Would that count?

Yeah, they should really pretend to like it instead, that'll definitely be much better.

Why is it so fun to watch Grubb melt during the Disney discussion? He's a cool and fun guy, and yet I was delighted as he slowly slunk closer to the floor during the whole thing!
