Alt+F1: 94 - MotoGP Austria 2016

Now that we're all MotoGP experts, we don't have to grill Gurk about the best MotoGP races of the past decade, which fingers to use to brake, and whether motorcycles are all-wheel drive... but we do anyway.

Alt+F1 is a weekly Formula 1 podcast from your friends at Giant Bomb. We run down the twists and turns of Earth's fastest and most expensive urinating contest. Join us for race recaps, news from the wide world of racing and the latest on Pastor Maldonado.

I second the Long Way Down/Long Way Round docs. They're fantastic shows. Long Way Round is the better of the two IMO, but both are great entertainment.

Also MX Nation 2016 is fantastic series if you love Motocross.

And I know @dannyodwyer and @drewbert will probably hate me for mentioning DH biking yet again, but Crankworx Whistler 2016 is happening right now and upload a regular set of vids online.

They're banning the winglets - they will not be allowed on the bikes in 2017 for 'safety'.

I hope you guys make MotoGP a regular thing with Gurk. Listen, I consider myself a MotoGP fan and I know a lot about it, and I also do some track days myself so I know a lot of this bike stuff. However, not only does Gurk ride and race, he's also even a bigger MotoGP fan than me in that he has memorized a lot of details about the history and most current events.

You guys are lucky to have someone like Gurk who knows this much about it. There aren't a ton of people that could do as good of a job as Gurk is doing in this podcast.

I hope you guys keep up the MotoGP casts. The series needs more audience and it deserves it. I think this podcast proves that it deserves it.

Great job with the podcast. Keep it up guys!

A few more Motorbike movies for everyone

TT3D, or Closer To The Edge as the 2D version is called, following the TT racers (but mostly Guy Martin) through a week at the Isle of Man TT races. This one has been mentioned before by the podcast gents but it's worth a rewatch.

Road, which is about the Dunlop racing family from Ballymoney, Northern Ireland, generally regarded as the greatest road racing dynasty around. Details the highs and lows of Joey, Robert, William and Michael Dunlop and their racing careers. Bit of a tear jerker. Also narrated by Liam "Set of skills" Neeson.

If I can remember more I'll post them.

Closer to The Edge is worth it just for Conor Cummins crash. Actually, that covers the week Hutchy won all the senior races, right?

On a related note, next year I'm taking the plunge on the MotoGP coverage. Shame I can't hire Toby Moody and Julian Ryder to watch it with me and commentate. :(

I googled the "leg out" thing after watching for the first time last weekend. So glad it came up in the cast. It has been tested. Doesn't really effect lap times.

And I second the Downhill Mountain biking. Whistler is an amazing venue.

Really glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for the kudos and the winglet clarification. I wasn't sure if it was for sure gonna be banned all together or limited by regulation.

Gurk - winglets already banned for Moto2 and 3 as well. Those were stopped straight away.

Loving the evolution of the show. Motorsports is wonderful, and the various forms are unique enough to really enjoy.

Also, UPF suggestion - the old Climax developed MotoGP games on Xbox. That's what originally sparked my interest in MotoGP.

Phillip Island 2015 is worth a watch. I think this year's German GP at the SausageRing is interesting on many levels. I actually didn't find the Red Bull Ring to be all that interesting but happy with the results.

As for the leg thing, if you see Marc Marquez with his leg out he is getting serious about going fast. I think Austin 2015 has him catching the bike once with his leg, crazy!

Another thing to like about MotoGP is the massive crowds the races pull, the Czech race gets good turnout and I think almost all GP's outsell F1 (maybe not the Australian GP with only 30k). Points are paid out to 15th.

Yes Danny Assen is in the north of the netherlands. It was funny this year with the weather, the rainstorms would pass over my house and then 10min later arive at the track and by that time the weather would be sunny again where I was.

as far as marquez and his shoulder goes, I'm sure he got some kind of coctail from doctor Costa (you could make a movie just about that guys involvement with moto gp)

Edit: the game drew was thinking of is probably spin tyres EDIT: never mind

Austria race was pretty good for the first couple of laps, but turned into a bit of a procession after that. The lower formulas (Moto2/Moto3) had way better races, well worth checking out.

@jambogt: probably the first and last time it'll be on here I'd guess, at least until someone discovers it in NMS. Drove through it at the weekend, but never been to the bar or to the statue.

@helloiamgary: If you visit a system called The Clogher Valley (with Augher, Clogher and Fivemiletown in it, natch) you'll know who discovered it.

It's the most fun I've had in the game.

I did call my first planet "The Toon" and the system "Balletmonae" but I should have just gone with the normal spelling!

Just to clear things up, Italy doesn't have a bunch of city states, we have two enclaves. One is San Marino, which is basically a small mountain and surroundings (cool name tho, Mount Titan). The other is the Vatican City, which is just a little part of Rome, doesn't even have a thousand citiziens, and was created in 1929 when we were under the fascists as part of deals (Patti Lateranensi) between the Pope and the then Reign of Italy. From 1870, when we took Rome while the french were busy (we couldn't earlier because the french king vowed to protect the Papal State and the pope), to 1929 the popes stayed pissed off in their palaces refusing to aknowledge the situation, which i think would have greatly benefitted public life and lawmaking in Italy if it continued to be the state of affairs

ps: the San Marino national team of soccer has the quickest scoring ever in national team matches with a goal scored after 8.3 seconds of game time to England

@dannyodwyer@drewbert Actually you really should use the front brake more than the rear with any kind of cycle. You need to get used to the feel but it stops you far faster and more safely than the rear alone. It's remarkably hard to flip yourself over the handlebars of a bicycle (or "push bike" for, if you prefer) by using the front brake.

Yes! I should've corrected him. It's same for pedal bike. Rear tire skidding on a 10% downhill is not fun ;)
