"Picasso's Normie Period?"

Ben must have a minor in Art History to know about all of these obscure but totally accurate factoids.

This is both really neat, as someone thinking about doing art schooling several years later than I should be, and sort of lame, particularly that there is no metric, however loose, for the grading, since in aesthetics, one of the more universal things is that art is in some form a communication, whatever the framework; i.e. it does have qualities and vocabulary, and is not formless and without meaning. (I think that art is a communicated meaning, without necessarily defining the nature or object of the communication, nor necessarily a singular meaning, and technical skill empowers the artist) The grading in this game is entirely random. But the game itself seems neat, and is not about "combat" in a way that is refreshing, specifically on this site.

I wish there would be more games like this, and more coverage of them, rather than whatever the latest Very Expensive Turd the big companies are squeezing out is. Games like this use gameplay in a much more expressive way, as an art, than many of the highest profile "playable films" are. It's a rare occurrence in an expensive game, almost like an inverse correlation. The most poignant high-budget title I can think of right now that does what I'm talking about is the Souls series, which does it well. Another example would be Final Fantasy XIII, which does it, but not well (but in a way that other Final Fantasies fail to do meaningfully IME). I think Getting Over It is a more well-executed use of artistic design than any Call of Duty campaign could ever aspire to, but I mean that in the sense of who and how it is being developed, rather than that it is impossible for a high-budget game to be created in such a way.

Chaos as the root of all art?

Interesting idea. I think what @benpack 's teacher might be saying is that as children we aren't afraid to attack a blank page with anything we got. The more we create art the more we can make order of the chaos. As most people grow older they loose that fearlessness and stop drawing.

What the hell did Ben search in Google NOT to find the name of that painting game from last year?

"steam painting game sell the art" brings you right to it.

This game is cool, but honestly the biggest problem is the lack of camera control. I think it might be that way to give some sort of forced perspective on the environment I guess, but it makes getting around a pain and so often I wish I could get a better look at things and can't. It's kind of hard to luxuriate or even enjoy the weird crazy shit in this game when you're stuck viewing it from a bad angle.

The file format for the files made with the program for the koala pad on the C64 is the one used for any standard C64 art that doesn't use weird hardware hacks for more colors etc

Is the camera really wild in this game or is it Ben swinging the camera around like mad? (to be clear, I'm assuming it's the game and that Ben knows better than to just shake the camera back and forth during a video if he could help it)

Because I am 70 seconds into the video and starting to get motion sick... D:

TIL 'frosh week' isnt a thing anywhere else. Of course, we don't really use the term 'freshman' either, particularly, never in high school.

They must hate having people stream or record videos of this game by having that background.

Julian Glander's art is very good! I'm a little bit bummed that they didn't bother saying who made this game, or say much beyond the kind of Youtuber type "wow, this game is ~weird~ and I bet it'd be neat on ~drugsss~" but I'm glad they at least gave it coverage?

@rejizzle: Well, actually... *pushes up glasses* that's not true.

Acronym origins for words are a lot rarer than people think they are; most of the time when someone tells you a word comes from an acronym, they're wrong. They are exceptions, of course (e.g. scuba and OK), but there's a lot of folk etymologies out there claiming words come from acronyms when they don't.

Hmm, i guess i would prefer to have the creator decide what the 'good' art is if that would get rid of the randomized ranking at the end. The suspense of your teacher looking at your art and grading it well is kinda lost on me when you know that it really doesn't matter what you create and that even a cross would be sufficient.

I guess the real objective is to get inspired to make some neat art and share those files later on? Not really for me.
