Not gonna lie. Kind of elated to hear an actual reasoned Sonic discussion on GB.

I'll take my small victories where I can get them.

I love you Patrick. Jim Sterling is fantastic. You spend over 40 minutes circling one topic. It was drivin me crazy. Yes it's a brave new world for personalities. but I want to know what you've been playing, I want the news that fits to prints. But the time code is 41:25 to start talking about something else.

I quite like a look behind the curtain of your respective jobs--the whole internet content sphere is going through some super-weird shit lately, and as a result I'm fascinated by what's come of it (Patreon in particular). It gives a way for more people to get their voices out there, assuming of course they can manage to draw in enough people. Not having to have millions of viewers/readers in order to make a living is a bold new world, for those who can navigate that weird fuckin' world.

I haven't played the game so I can't speak about it confident but didn't Sonic and the Secret Rings for Wii have a gameplay style similar to what Jim was talking about? Wasn't that a on rails-runner?

Did it work or did it have problems? Or was the problem that the game became repetitive or short?

Yes Jim you are absolutely right game developers are not pushing out and diversifying enough for the market! Its not like they are making billions and the industry continues to grow and has become the biggest entertainment industry in the world.... oh wait.

T-minus how many days/years Patrick goes Indie?

edit: Game development doesn't do a very good job at supporting people when they get older. Sure you can make more money than journalism, but do you really want to keep working 60-80 hours a week when you're in your mid thirties? What about your mid forties? Your fifties won't matter because nobody makes it to then.

Sterling X Giant Bomb: the second best cross-over today!

The ground is littered with the corpses of studios that dove at the "core" group: 1st world white 15-35yo males.

There's quite alot of developers that make stank bank on...well, just about everyone, or other someones. I guess they quite like not having the competition, I know that much.

Lol its funny that they talk about Sonic being more limited in 3D.... They already did that with Sonic the Hedgehog and The Secret Rings.... without motion control and a bad camera if they stuck with this it could have been something... Or they could just make Sonic Rush HD

I think a lot of people in the press tend to feel that way because they are exposed to every big budget title from publishers and every new popular indie game. They don't realize that the people who don't play video games all the time don't care about how similar some games are because they only buy 4-5 a year.

Of course there are going to be studios folding and lack of diversity as the market becomes saturated. That happens in every market. GTA 5 had record setting sales in the UK today. I think the market is doing okay overall.

@dogma: I don't think Jim played Secret Rings. Or at least he's never talked about it. It is practically that.

@metalliccookies: I really wish they'd grow on Secret Rings. It may of been the time, it may of been the place, but I really enjoyed that game when it came out.

another thing i dont think a lot of people know is that Sonic Generations hooked up to a large 3D TV is one of the most amazing gaming experiences of my life it is simply amazing how good it looks in 3D. I would say its almost worth having a 3D TV just for it.

I get that they wanted to make a Paper Mario style subfranchise with Sonic Boom, but their mistake was still the same as with the main series, they made a Sonic game.

Yay Jim for reclaiming Europe's gaming history. I'm very tired of the Nintendo worship coming from US that seems to assume gaming in the 80s and 90s was just Nintendo. For a whole bunch of us gaming existed on PC, Amiga and Sega consoles and Nintendo was something we were vaguely aware of.

Hell, I wish he were angrier about it. That's an argument somebody needs to make and it makes me equal parts sad and angry that European teens are coming into gaming inheriting someone else's nostalgia and thinking Final Fantasy, which is a game nobody knew about until emulators happened, is somehow more historically relevant tan Lemmings or Cannon Fodder or whatever.
