Bombin' the A.M. With Scoops & the Wolf!

Bombin' the A.M. With Scoops and the Wolf: 10/04/2013

While walking through the week's headlines, I'll try to tease some impressions of Beyond out of Alex. (I don't do a good job.)

Grab a cup of coffee, and catch up on the day's headlines with Giant Bomb guys that aren't in San Francisco.

We got wifi in NYC courthouses. It was my saving grace during my 2 weeks of Grand Jury Duty (lots of down time).

After recently watching a playthrough of Indigo Prophecy, and discovering that Heavy Rain was seriously well grounded in comparison, I am super curious as to what Beyond Two Souls is going to be. It's hard to get a good sense of it, but it sounds like we're getting another dose of Heavy Rain for good and for bad.

I fundamentally hate the things David Cage prioritizes in writing, but I can't help but be fascinated by what he's doing.

If teasing impressions out of alex doesn't work, i would advice clobbering. That usually works wonders.

I've been summoned three times for jury duty already and I'm only 28. Never got past the waiting for 8 hours stage though.

Cool show, as always. I've got an idea/feature request to spruce it up. Is it possible to get a news ticker-like scroll going at the bottom of the screen? Like when Alex had his 'Alex "The Wolf" Navarro' name thing up last week (or whenever)? That would add to the news-y-ness of the show. You can have the list of headlines scroll buy as you talk about them, or you guys can always add stupid shit like "mmm, tacos" in there for funsies.

I find it strange that Patrick is ho-hum on Destiny saying it's an amalgamation of other things but then turns to Titanfall which is CoD but ramped up. I played it at Eurogamer and it's a blast to play but at the same time it's not the wholly unique game either.

@mrcraggle: I haven't played either one, but from what I see Destiny doesn't seem to be doing anything I haven't seen previously, even if they do it better, I feel like I would have experienced it before. For Titanfall it doesn't look like an experience I've had before. All in all when I see a Destiny trailer, if I didn't know it was Destiny, I wouldn't know what game it was, but with Titanfall, there are no questions. Just my take on it from someone who hasn't played either.

@patrickklepekI have only once been taken from the Jury room into a court room. It was an interesting experience. The judge has everyone fill out a little questionairre for the lawyers with your age, highest amt of education (no HS, HS degree, AA, some college, BS, MS, PhD, etc), your occupation (or unemployed or stay at home parent) and whether you know anyone in law enforcement or the legal profession.

After that they called up 20ish people and the judge went through their questionairre and the lawyers took turns removing people from the 20. After a certain number had been removed they added more and repeated the process. I wasn't really aware of all the reasons the two lawyers were using to remove jurors, but it seemed like anyone with a higher education degree (or this one dude with like 4 degrees) (BS, 2 MSes, and a PhD) was often removed. Though it seems like age didn't matter too much. The people in the box when I was called up were just about as random an assortment of people as you could ask for. Some older (40+), some elderly (60+), a few young workers like me (late 20-30s), and one college student (early 20s), both men and women and pretty much a mixed bag of races and professions.

I was at one point sitting in the actual jury box as one of the 12 who would be used, until the defense lawyer asked for me to be dismissed. After that (it was after lunch and maybe 3pm-ish), I went home and my service was complete. I haven't been called since. That was over 4 years ago. Not a terrible way to spend an afternoon all things considered. I even got to ditch a silly meeting at my office that day! Win-win!

Welcome to America, where everyone wants a fair trial by jury, so long as they don't have to be inconvenienced serving on a jury for someone else.

Huh? CoD didn't have any kind of vehicles in multiplayer. The fact this game is traversal and vehicle focused is kind of huge shift.

@Cage: People are growing wise to his "Im doing well advances that no one has done before in video games" schtick isn't true over the course of 20 years and a larger majority of Beyond's sales are people looking for what they like or the trainwreck factor vs any actual hope for quality.

@GTA V: A game...where money...is worthless? Perish the thought!

@Iwata: He's a softie, bless his laughing heart, but he's up against corporate world dogma where sacrificing workforce is what you do when the ink is red (more to sate dumb shareholders rather than any use of it to fix a company's problems). Somewhere, Jack Welch is facepalms every time that is used rotely like that.

Loudly declaring "NOBODY CARES" about things is one of Patrick's most obnoxious habits. I really wish he wouldn't do it.

I think you may have missed the point I was trying to get across. I know CoD doesn't have vehicles in multiplayer but I wasn't saying that either. I said it was CoD ramped up to the next level. When you're just a regular solider, you're on the ground fighting other enemies as you would in a Call of Duty game. It's the added elements such as the mechs and wall running that add to the overall experience but we can't all pretend that this is the first game to have either of those features but the way Patrick spoke about both Destiny and Titanfall makes it seem that way.

@meatball: About the new Pokemon games? From what I remember he kind of whispered it, and it's not like it isn't true, nobody from GB does care about Pokemon(if you mean something else then nevermind).

With all due respect to Tom Clancy, when I see the name on the front of a game it evokes feels of "middle of the road" and "nothing to see here" to me personally. Things should have their own identity.

That was quite good timing on the Silk Rd. joke, I must admit. Well done, Patrick.

Anyway, I love this show. These guys work really well with one another. It always makes me just want to sit around and talk about video games with them, which is probably about the biggest measure of success you can get in a conversational show such as this.

Yeah, journalism is a nono for jury duty. Even if you get far enough in that the lawyers see you, the lawyers will boot you right away.

Same is true of law enforcement workers and their families.

The reluctance to serve is actually a good thing in this case, though it may be counter-intuitive. A good juror is someone who does not really want to be there, but will answer the summons if called, grumbling about it but still showing up and taking it seriously. Bad jurors are people who really want to be there (who usually have a massive biased skeleton in their closet) and people who really don't want to be there and don't pay attention.

I don't care too much about EA Sports games, but I'm happy to hear there is at least feature parity between this gen and next gen. The feature stripping they did with the mid-2000s Xbox and Ps3 games is really what turned me off the franchise.

The game itself kind of has a cycle where the higher numbers are when an expansion first comes out, new people try it out, old people come back, etc. and then over the course of an expansion the numbers drop. That's pretty much how it's gone for them since Wrath. And everyone likes to tout any loss of numbers as the "deathknell" of wow. When you have several million people paying to play your game, pretty sure you're ok even if you lose a few, especially since they don't need those numbers for the game to even survive, by any means. It's a cycle players have gotten used to, myself included, i stopped about 2 months ago and probably won't resub until the next expansion. Are the number's lower than they were a few years ago, yes, does it mean people wont be playing wow 2 years from now, highly doubtful.
