nothing makes my day more than reading angry fanboy comments.  I love it!

1.  Ignore everything negative the reviewer has to say about the game that backs up his final score. (all justifiable points I'm sure)

2.  Bring up old review scores to justify your anger.
3.  Bash bash bash!  How dare he rate this game merely "great" when it should be "perfect!"

I have to disagree with Jeff on the Spec Ops mode, I ONLY played World at War's Nazi Zombie mode (I didn't buy the game, just played it with a friend) and I enjoyed it quite a bit but I did not like Spec Ops mode in the slightest, that no checkpoint thing kinda killed it for me. It also felt like more of the same. I believe that a lot of the maps were even recycled from single player just with different objectives and tougher (or more) enemies.

I know that having checkpoints would have killed the challenge for a lot of people but I know that I would have actually finished it if that was the case.

In the end I'll take fun over challenge any day.

Wasn't too interested in this game, but watching all the stuff going on in this video makes me want to play it.

" Something kinda ironic about this. Jeff's MW2 review was pretty much all, "This game looks just like MW1, but things like shooting down UAVs and slightly different perks mean that the game's totally different now!"  I wonder if he's changed his tune or if another IW-made COD that's in the exact same mold will have him saying the same again. "
This is how I feel, too. It seems, at least in my opinion, Modern Warfare 2 should have been the one to be like, "okay guys, you just did this." And from what I'm seeing of Black Ops, this should be the one that did enough interesting, different stuff to keep the formula interesting.

Does anybody else feel this way?

Totally agree Jeff, this game feels the same as every other COD slight variations keep me intrigued but don't keep me hanging around for very long. A bunch of folks here have been saying "it's the same since COD 4!" No this game and all the other COD's are the exact same game from 1 thru 8 they are all the same minus enviromental changes and tossing it between these 2 studios go back through the lineage and see's for yourself folk's there isn't a bit of difference. Great game but hitting the same strides as all the one's before it.

" I'm gonna go ahead and disagree with Jeff. Although I have long since lost interest in the series, "bro gamers" -dudes who tend to only play Madden, COD, and Halo- will continue to buy these games regardless of whether or not there is any innovation because: A. They are new and shiny, and B. They still scratch that competitive itch.  "
And C, everyone else has it. If there friends have it, they must have it.

Its been a year since MW2. He is allowed to grow tired of it in that time. Just because he gave MW2 5 stars even though its not much different than MW1, doesn't mean he has to give 5 stars to Black Ops or that he can't grow tired of the similar formulas.

I was watching somebody else play the campaign last night, and I have to say I was impressed. I just stepped back for a second, and considered how much crap was going on, with droves of VC coming over the hill in that one Vietnam section. All acting with reasonable AI control, all firing, bullet trajectories being tracked, everybody running around, great graphics quality in 1080p, surround sound used to full effect, and locked at a solid 60 FPS...on an XBOX360. In terms of making the best possible use of the available horsepower, this game is no mean feat!

The RC car is fun to play with too...scares the crap outta my cats though!

Seriously, the issue with competitive multiplayer is that you run out of things to buy? Last time I checked, multiplayer was about shooting people, not leveling up. In my day, we played SOCOM 3, with all the weapons already unlocked, and only unranked matches since we didn't have a credit card, and we liked it.

I actually don't like the way CoD levels up, because I basically only want whichever gun I want to use, and I hate waiting. Like, level 70 for an AK-47? Load of bull, since that's one of my favorite guns. ACR at level 48? Bull again.

And what's this I'm seeing about a 3-round burst M16? Did they pay any attention at all? M16s were full auto for a long time.

Good review Jeff.  I just wish you caught the PC problems everyone is having so you could of mentioned it.

Wanted to post that the PC version is borked for me, and according to the Activision a Steam forums its doing the same for many many others. .   My  PC is well above the recommended specs and its is stuttering non-stop.   MW2 plays smooths as butter at about 100fps on my machine, while Black Ops is a stuttering unplayable mess.   Just trying to spread the word to be skeptical of the PC version before you buy.

For some reason seeing Kennedy in Nazi Zombies mode gives me no qualms, but putting him and Robert McNamara and others in your over the top campaign doesn't sit right with me...

@example1013: Multiplayer these days has to have some sense of progression
and the unlocking can seem contrived but it gives you that "carrot on a stick" type reward system so players keep coming back . I felt like I would run out of things to buy when I found that oh-so special gun.

" ´´ By the time i reached level 20 i felt i unlucked everything i needed to´´  Is this something negative? because if it is thats bullshit on your part.  You still need to level up to 50 to buy ALL the weapons, and by your standard the gun you start out with is all i need because it shoots bullets and kills people.  Really jeff gerstmann?  "

The point is that by the time he got to around level 20 or so he had already purchased all the weapons/etc that he cared about, meaning all the stuff left was stuff he would use maybe once, if that.  That, in turn, makes the leveling beyond that kind of pointless,  if all you are doing is getting stuff you don't care about or don't plan to ever use.  Personally, the main weapons I used in CoD were the G3 and the Uzi.  So, as soon as I purchase whatever their equivalents are in Black Ops, then I don't really care about any of the other weapons. "
The static leveling had this too though. In COD4 I was good from rank 4 (custom class with AK47 and favorite perks), however, I had to wait until level 70 to get it in MW2, and 38 here. It's nothing new really. "
I don't think anyone is trying to claim that it is something new, just that it seems to reach that point sooner than before.  Not just with the weapons, but perks and attachments too.  As soon as you have the money you can get whatever perks and attachments you use and ignore the rest.  You don't have to level up to get the gun, then actually use the gun to unlock attachments for it, etc.  Either way it's a minor complaint, and not one that is coming from me, btw.  I was just trying to clarify the meaning of the complaint.

Call of Duty used to be such an interesting and innovative franchise back in the day on the PC, now it feels sort of like another cash-in for Activision to milk out just like their Guitar Hero series.

The story takes place in interrogation flashbacks?
You play as a soldier doing secret ops that the government can deny?
Clearly, CoD BLOPs is just a poor man's Alpha Protocol.

I'm surprised you were into Spec Ops more than Nazi Zombies, Jeff. Spec Ops was fun for what it was, but Nazi Zombies felt like a fresh new game within a game to me.

The difference might be that he's played four of these modern Call of Duty games at this point.

And it only dropped one star.

Relax.

You guys need to do more video reviews. One every couple of months just doesn't cut it. I know it's tedious, but big releases warrant them.

Finished playing through the campaign -- it took me 8 hours on regular (I'm totally a casual gamer).  I thought it was great fun even though there are some scripting issues.  But all in all I thought the quick time events and cut scenes were well placed and made sense within the context of the game play.   I started playing the multiplayer but still find myself playing Halo: Reach more then this game.

@T0mF5:
Because every. single. game. has. zombies. There's zombies in the mall, zombies in war, zombies in the wild west, zombies playing football, zombies eating, zombies playing music, zombies in Africa, zombies in space, zombies getting hit by cars, zombies in the hood, etc. It's an over-done gag that developers fall back on beause they don't want to be creative more than they have to be.

As far as McNamaras go, I've always preferred Andy to Robert.
