Wow it was painfull watching them keep attacking that boss during the counterattack phase. Haven't played more than an hour of Chrono trigger myself but from what I've heard from friends Ryan and Patrick might end up running into some serious trouble down the line.

I'm not sure why they haven't already. I remember dying to that boss at least twice the first time and they just blunder through it without paying attention. Bastards.

Ok, I feel like this needs to be said finally.

Critical paths through JRPGs? They're *easy*. Seriously, these games are meant to be impossible to screw up. If you want to min/max it and go do optional hard stuff you can. If you don't? Then you just grind. Or you get turned around and wander for a few minutes, which in JRPGs means tons of extra XP, which means that the difficulty level goes down automatically.

A properly balanced JRPG, and Chrono Trigger is very much one of those, will never force you into a corner or make you face impossible odds. At worst, you'll need an hour or two of grind.

The whining can stop. There won't be a moment where these guys slam against a wall because they "are doing it wrong". I know we all want to think we made it through these games because we sat down and used our mental powers to make that complex system submit to our massive skill, but... well, we didn't, the game is just designed so that it's impossible to lose.

There, I said it.

Quite enjoying this ER simply because I never played this game before (I know, I know). So going into this, I have no idea what they might be missing or overlooking and I think perhaps, I'm enjoying this moreso than someone who knows all of the in's and out's of this game.

Ryan! I love the ER even if it's been a bit slow going, but please visit the towns for once! Talk to people! Stuff changes when you time travel! You will enjoy the game more.

Save your sanctimonius speeches for the people they're intended for. Neither I nor the other person you quoted 'whined' that they would hit a wall or wouldn't be able to finished, all was said was that it's very likely they're gonna have some trouble later on because they aren't the most intuitive JRPG players and as *easy* as JRPG critical paths are, they can and do have difficulty spikes.

Quick Looks get uploaded on weekends on all the time, but the Endurance Run (which is already recorded ahead of time) is only released on weekdays? They're really trying to stretch this content as far as it can go.

Magus is pronounced MAGE-US. He's a MAGE. Because I said so damnit.

Man your crazy. Mag like magazine and us as in us.

Long a, so it is may-jes. Plural, magi, is may-jai, which is where "mage" comes from.

I have to admit, them almost figuring out the boss counter attack and then not was pretty painful to watch.

Are you kidding? That's... that's exactly the same thing. You guys did say that:

From where I stand, "have serious trouble down the line" and "it was painful watching them attack during the counterattack phase" seems to me like whining about hitting a wall. And you know that all the hate isn't about a friendly advice to grind, it's people claiming that they are "playing the game wrong" and making the ER hard to watch out of a desire to tell them what to do. Which is exactly what you said. You know? Painful to watch?

So yeah, there's quite a bit of irony involved in you calling what I did a "sanctimonious speech" after that one. I'm surprised I even have to point that out. My point stands in full. JRPGs play themselves, they're doing fine, people who keep bitching about them missing stuff are just whining, they'll make it through with, at worst, a couple of hours of grinding or backtracking. That is not "serious trouble".

@GoldBlaze: I just beat Magus yesterday, and I noticed she (and other characters) had leveled alongside Brog and Barle when not in use. The only things they don't get out of battle are Dual and Tri Techs (e.g. Delta Attack with Brog and Bobo).

Truth be told, fighting Magus yesterday helped me understand how well-rounded most JRPGs have to be in order for people to play the game the way they want to:

The whole fact that Magus constantly switches up which magic element he uses to decimate you shows just that. When I was playing the game for the first time, I died about 10 times before beating him, and I still had no idea how I did it. I was mixing and matching with so many combinations and strategies that I didn't even care by the end of it. Now, after seeing how easy it is to game Magus into using the magic one of your characters knows, I see why most people admire and despise the genre: JRPGs are so "well-rounded" that designers had to create different yet 'predictable' fighting patterns to allow people to use any fathomable strategy, even if it consists of using one character to fight multiple bosses in a row:

That battle's gonna be great to watch. What may be just as great to watch is when they get the person from the Prehistoric Era; let's just say putting a 'B' at the front won't fit as well.

Sure, but consider the specific game here. I beat Chrono Trigger when I was twelve years old, making all of these same mistakes and many more along the way. The only fight that puts up serious resistance is the very last one in the game. All others are perfectly doable with limited or zero grasp on strategy beyond "I need to kill this bit with this type of attack before I kill the other bit."

They won't read this but should've taken Lucca if you want a full complement of magic users. Too bad they won't see other combination of techs because they seem to be the type that only use one party setup.

I like how everyone is acting like this game is hard, and berating them over how they fought a boss they easily beat on the first try.

@NoelVeiga:

It's not 'exactly the same thing' and I'd hope if you stop and think about it for a second you'd realize that.

Comments were made (this is infact a comment section), Neither complaints nor ciriticisms were made, you just decided to translate the comments into them.

"From where I stand, "have serious trouble down the line" and "it was painful watching them attack during the counterattack phase" seems to me like whining about hitting a wall."

THAT'S why I called it a sancitmonious speech, all you're doing is arguing against someone whose words you've twisted into a viewpoint you clearly want to argue against instead of bothering to go out and actually find people who hold the oppinion you're against. You'll notice I'm not saying "BUT THEY ARE GONNA HIT A WALL!! THIS IS GONNA SUUUUUCK!!!" I'm telling you not misinterpret comments just so you can rush to the defense of of the Endurance Run.

The haters are annoying yes and there quite a few out for this Endurance Run but TRY to restrict your zealotry to preeching at them and not people just commenting on the episode.

Why the ef does Ryan refuse to use a shelter before saving EVERY TIME? They've already almost died twice in a row after dying and then reloading a save where they basically had no health on any members in the first encounter >.>

Wow I can't believe they beat that boss so easily without realizing it had a counter attack stance. Chrono Trigger has some great art, story, and characters, and the way random encounters work is far better then the alternatives at the time but god the gameplay is simplistic and easy. Heal all when you need to and wail on the enemies until they submit. Why does FFXIII get such flack when this is considered the best JRPG of all time? At least in FFXIII you can't afford every weapon you come across and has a battle ranking thing to reward quickness.
