Man, old habits die hard. They used Luminaire before and didn't think the mana to damage was worth it, but they were using it on enemies that weren't vulnerable to it. Now that Brono has the gold stud, they're still sticking with Lightning2. :(

Edit: They're learning! Now if they just remember to put the Hero Medal back on Brog, they'll be in business.

PSA FOR ANYONE PLAYING THIS AT HOME

Do NOT remove the items from the magic chests. Instead, click on them (or whatever) so that it tells you that something inside is reacting to the pendant, but then do not remove the item.

Then, go to 1000 AD and open the chests there. You'll get an improved version of the item and then you can go back to 600 AD and get the lesser versions as well. If you don't activate the items in the past first, you'll just get the lesser items in the present.

If you do it the way Ryan and Patrick do it here, you'll only get the lesser versions and the chests will be gone in 1000 AD (because they've already been opened).

Same goes for the chests with the Black, White, Red, and Blue vests. Activate the chests in 600 AD, open them in 1000 AD, then open them again in 600 AD. You'll get better versions of the vests that absorb 100% of the damage instead of just 50%.

Quoted in the hopes that they see this.

Does anyone know if these side quests are mandatory, or are they strong enough to fight Lavos if they wanted to?

If you think about it though, this sidequest is pretty much built to hint at paradox-ing chests. It'd be shitty to leave all those rooms in the Hero's Grave empty, while the tip-offs are your two empty open chests left over.

The Shiva Blade (4x damage critical hits) that they wouldn't know how to upgrade, has the potential to come out stronger than the Rainbow if Crono's speed is maxed and none of his techs used...but yeah. can't fault em on this one.

At least they figured out Luminaire + Gold Stud = broken.

Just stomp the game, dude. It's not long at all if you can play smarter than these two, and that's not too hard to do.

@holybins: Nah they're not mandatory. In fact if they put their mind to it, they could probably off Lavos right now.

The side quests do give some pretty cool stuff though and they make the final battle easier. You also get extra story for finishing them. Bobo in particular still has a sidequest that needs doing in the future.

Yeah, no way they were figuring that one out. Oh well.

What is there to figure out? No one ever tells you anything about this double chest mechanic, and furthermore: it's counter-intuitive. I thought it was pretty neat that there were super powerful items hidden in chests around the world that only you could open. It makes complete sense, since if anyone could have opened them, they would have been taken.

Logically if you unsealed the chests and went forward in time, what you'd find is that the items were gone, having been taken by someone else five minutes after you unsealed them. How are you supposed to explain that the items are still there and get better if you open the chests? It defies reason. Do magic items get better with age if they aren't sealed in magic boxes, like wine? What's to prevent people (who visit the ruins frequently now, as it has been established) from taking them?

As far as I can tell, the only way to discover this mechanic is one of two ways: by accident, or by insane game logic. The insane game logic is like this: since the chest opens in two stages, there must be a reason for that. You essentially have to work backwards from the mechanic, not forwards from reasonable assumptions.

Very nice episode! A quest complete with hardly much faffing about trying to hunt down NPC's. I hope they find the factory and realize that it's not the same factory as the one they've been to. They'll figure it out though.

I forgot about the Jerky quest, but I don't even remember what that was for or if it was important.

The insane game logic is like this: since the chest opens in two stages, there must be a reason for that. You essentially have to work backwards from the mechanic, not forwards from reasonable assumptions.

You'd be completely right except for 2 things:

1) You're not unsealing the boxes, the items in the boxes are just reacting to the pendant

2) The magic items get better because of coming in contact with the pendant, which has the magical energy of Lavos all up inside it or whatever. The game never really explains why dreamstone (which the pendant and Masamune are made of) is so attuned to Lavos and its power. It also doesn't explain why it takes 400 years for this energy to manifest itself in the weapon.

Anyway it's a pretty easy thing to miss. I didn't know until I read about it online during my second playthrough. On my first playthrough I didn't even think to open the boxes in the present first for double copies.

This has been one of my favourite episodes so far. Nice commentary, interesting side quest, timely puzzle solving, and solid combat execution. It shouldn't take them too much time flying around in the future to find the other factory. Hopefully they find the Sun Keep first though, otherwise they won't know it's in that time period. I'm really glad they found out about the Sun Stone / Rainbow Shell thing too, I want to see their reactions to the might that is the Rainbow.

Side note: I never would have thought I'd ever associate 'might' with rainbows.

@mithical: If you take the item from the future, then go back and take it from the past, how would it be there for you to have taken it in the future? Shouldn't there be some sort of time paradox melt down? The first item should disappear or something, right?

The time chest thing I hoped they would just forget about, then remember about in the Present and get the upgraded one. I guess it is possible to guess that "oh hey this gives me an option unlike normal chests, and oh this thing exists in two time periods" and that it also connected to the pendant which started the whole time travel business in the first place. Also, again the translation during the Cryrus scene is borderline offensive or at least very juvenile compared to newer/better translation.

@pakattak: You're right. What should happen is exactly what happened to Barle near the beginning of the game. It's exactly the same scenario; 'Thing' from present brought to past, past changed so present 'thing' could not exist. The item should split into 3 flashing images of itself that spread away from each other for a second before disappearing with a white flash, blue sparkles, and a sound effect I can only describe as 'pshk-shing! ing..ing..'.

I posit the the following ridiculous theory! The flashy disappearance phenomenon is reserved only for when the act of the thing being brought to the past causes the thing to not exist in the present. Such delicious irony requires balance by cosmic forces resulting in an equally dramatic event, typically a brilliant display of light and sound.

@aceofspudz: The game does give you one hint that there's something going on with those message prompts but you'd have to open one of the chests in the forest or mystic cave to know that not all chests have a message prompt. Even then it's just kinda blind luck figuring that one out.

i accidentally figured out the boxes when i was opening them in 600AD and got the prompt and then thought, oh right causality, i can probably open this in 1000AD first and get two of the item, and then i picked no and in 1000AD it was like WHITE VEST POWERS UP and i was like OHHH

Reading some of these comments is kind of depressing in total. Expecting the game to explicitly tell you everything you have to do is a horrible idea and Chrono Trigger never followed that.

'I saw this chest in the present' 'i saw this chest in the past' 'these are the only chests that ask if i want to open it' 'it's a game about time travel'

This is what frustrates me. This is easy if you put your mind to it, your hand isn't held through it at all. Hand-holding is a major failure of many modern games, and then we get mad at games that don't do it.

I explicitly remember playing this game and thinking about how the chests work. I would much less frustrated if they at least went to get two copies of the same item, even not just upgrading them. I did that just to see what happens (Spoiler: no paradoxes happen)

I love time travel. It boggles the mind. This scenario comes up all the time in movies and other fiction and would essentially require a splitting of the timeline. However, the issue is usually better left alone because of the complexity and confusion in trying to make it work. Also, MAGIC!

Man, the amount of egotism floating around in this comment section about the "Powered-up future items" is intense. The sheer audacity of people getting angry at a games poorly explained mechanics is just mind boggling. Never once did the game outright let you know that things like that happen, so the bomber's missing out on something like that is surely understandable. Face it, you either looked at a FAQ or by some sheer miracle were able to connect the dots from the in-game prompts.

Keeping the Chrono Trigger music remixes alive. Got a pretty good response from this one several vids back. Bring more good ones on. This one takes a couple minutes or so to kick in; payoff. Post more if you got 'em.

BTW, don't ever let Ryan and Patrick ER FF8. Man, that would be a potential disaster with the way that the stats are calculated with drawn spells (Spoiler):
