Episode Notes:

This podcast is an audio supplement, meant to be played simultaneously with the film Battle Royale. We are watching the theatrical cut of the film via the US Blu-ray release. Streaming and rental options can be found here.

Our commentary begins at the 43 second mark. It's the title screen right after the parental advisory warning that plays at the top.

Battle Royale time :D

e: Shudder (via Amazon Prime) in both the US and UK is the theatrical cut (I verified both recently - runtime on the Amazon page is wrong). You can get a 7-day trial on the Shudder add-on pack.

The UK Arrow Films Blu-ray has both theatrical and extended cut versions available.

e: @subcan notes that the Amazon Prime rental is NOT the theatrical cut, despite being on the same page as the Shudder version.

Nice. I have the Blu-ray from 2012. Will be good to rewatch with GB commentary.

Monday is an odd day to release this I feel. The F&F ones were all on Fridays. I assume many who will watch with the commentary will maybe want to get a bit buzzed? It's called Film&40's after all.
In any case looking forward to watching this movie for the first time tonight

@boonsong: Alex wasn't able to get to the editing in time, probably due to not feeling well on Friday. I agree that the series is a better fit for the weekend, though very happy to have it at any time!! Enjoy the film, it's a singular creation.

Awesome! Great excuse to rewatch this. This film got me into Kitano, even though his role is pretty small, he totally owns it.

@meierthered: The film isn't that great but the concept and performances are strong enough to carry it imo. I highly recommend the book and the manga.

This is a great film but I really recommend the manga for anyone that wants more. It's way weirder and more fucked up!

also if you then go to quit Shudder there is a high chance they will bump it up to a month, there is some cool stuff on there, I signed up last night, for a different film . (Flying Lotus' first film, which is apparently a collaboration with a bunch of people like George Clinton and David Firth)

I know I'm in the minority but I really really hate this movie. I struggle with youth deaths and even though Battle Royale presents itself as quite over the top, I had a very hard time getting through this. I think it's a movie a lot of people should watch but it's not something I am capable of handling.

The GB content that makes me wish this site'd be in Europe. All of the streaming options offered are naturally not available in my region and then there's the whole "US version is running 0.001 seconds slower than PAL" thing on top of that, which makes me consider just using questionable streaming services instead.

But eh, I managed with *seven* F&F movies, so I'll struggle to get this working as well.

@glots: Yeah I remember watching the F&F movies having to occasionally quickly stop and resume the movie to get it all lined up because the commentary would lag behind the PAL version. Not a big deal but it was noticeable at times.

@giantlennonx_x: The version they're watching is 114m long (which is the original directors cut released in 2000), its confusing because what they call the "directors cut" is actually the Extended Cut and the Theatrical cut was originally called the Directors Cut.

If it runs for 121 Minutes, its the wrong version, find one that runs for 114 Minutes.

@alex: Please consider doing a F&40s for Torque (2004), the Fast and Furious-like with motorcycles! It would be a great supplement to the Fast and Furious series.

Agreed the concept is really solid, i just think the execution of it wasn't the best. Most of the actors did a fine job.

As for how Japanese keyboard works, I could type the hiragana in English, then select the representation in either English or Kanji, for example, if I were to type Nani (aka WHAT?)

I will type 'n' 'a' 'n' 'I' in English, and it would show up as なに and I could choose 何 as the Kanji.

only saw this recently, guess it's time to watch it again. was hoping they'd do this but wasn't sure if they would

also as someone else said, read the manga, and if you're struggling to find film, you aren't looking in the right places :^)

@alex: As you're not doing Battle Royale 2, you should at least remind yourself who the teacher is in that one (image below).

I'm glad I watched BR2, but it is absolutely a bad movie (it basically turns Nanahara into a bin Laden-type figure, even down to dress sense :/)

FWIW, if Blu-ray is an option, that's (almost always - there are some weird exceptions) a non-issue. Both will run at 24fps.

Also you might have noticed this, Takeshi Kitano's right part of the face is paralysed due to motorbike accident. Thus when he blinks, it looks like he's twitching.

Yeah, blu-ray and something like VLC would be ideal and were suggested with the F&F series already, iirc. Guess same goes for dvd. Might go check the local thirft store for a copy with few euros.

@vectortheangel: I have a similar thing but instead of underage violence/gore, it's sexual violence. Probably not ever going to watch Girl with the Dragon Tattoo because of this. No direct fault of the movie, just... nope. My point is, I can relate to the feeling. Preferences and detractors can be weird, man.

I always feel like Louis CK whenever anyone talks about "doing some early drinking" for one of these. Granted, I just straight up don't drink at all, so I probably don't have perspective. But I have drank before, and I don't know how the sequence of events for these people doesn't go "start movie. Drink the forty by the end. Fall asleep ten minutes after." Hell, for that matter, I don't know how the Beast crew does it. Drinking sucks. This movie is cool, though. But the novel's better. Like way better. Cooler ending, too. Apparently so is the manga? I should read that.

I really wish they would do more research about streaming options for movies. Every version I can find is for the Director's Cut, and I'm not going out to buy a blu ray just to watch this.
