How is Alex able to put out videos with a higher resolution than actual Giant Bomb? Just go compare the two FLT quick looks. That is pretty sad.

Haha, that was my first thought as well. No more of this "I'm Brad, let's waste missiles on ships that only have 1 shield" scrub play.

OK but really, I don't know if Brad understands how to conserve resources, given that he already played the iPad version a bit and that's a really early thing to learn.

Man, I just wanted to scream at the computer sometimes during this. You don't need to ionize the shields when you use the hacking on it. But of course If I had to talk while playing I would be much worse.

And it's admirable that you seem to not have check the wiki Alex, since you don't know what the stasis chamber does. It just the first step in a very long side quest to unlock a ship.

Man, when I play I have the game paused 90% of the time, only not pausing when I know exactly what I need to do and what my current situation is. Seeing Alex and Brad just roll through all "fuck it" style is just not good for my mental stability.

Hey @alex, hot tip: the ship you fight at 32:30 (the game calls it a Slug Scout) has an oxygen and engine room with no doors to them. If you shoot the oxygen room, they'll never be able to get into it to repair it, and you can let the oxygen slowly drain, then their crew dies. Any time you can take a ship relatively unharmed (as opposed to obliterating it) tends to give you more scrap and supplies.

Granted, in your situation, the ship had a missile launcher, so I still would've advised shooting their weapons room so you take less missile hits, but then ultimately leaving the ship alive at 1-2 HP as their last bit of oxygen drains. Also, any fires you start by shooting the weapons room are just gravy, because they'll deplete the oxygen that much faster.

After that you fought a "Slug Interceptor" with the same layout that only had a laser and beam weapon, and that one you could've taken out the oxygen room and just waited for them to die pretty easily.

And yeah, I feel your pain with the cloning bay: I usually upgrade it to level 2 pretty early just so it restores more health, and isn't so easy to completely destroy. I take it to level 3 most games unless I'm really short on scrap. Also, like the medbay, you can leave the cloning bay unpowered most of the time: it does the autoheal even without power, and it clones crewmembers during "story" events without power. You only need power if it is reviving a crewmember who dies during a ship/intruder battle.

Never sell the Ion Bomb. I'm not even sure where all your scrap went in this run (repairs, I guess), but I encourage you to upgrade engines as much as possible, they're great. Also, the game gifted you like a zillion good drones, though I understand that you passed on the drone system to instead show us the mind control and hacking and so on.

Meh, the Glaive Beam ain't all that. I use it if I find it for free, but 4-power weapons have such long cooldowns that they're a liability, and they're really expensive for just being kinda average. Though yes, Alex could've traded up his Halberd Beam for a Glaive Beam.

The real issue was Alex selling the Ion Bomb, which is probably the best 1-power weapon in the game (especially in combination with another ion weapon).

@joemotycki: Despite how good those weapons seem on paper, I've found them not actually practical in most situations. Requiring a ton of power, long charge times, and still needing other weapons paired with them to make them viable - it's a lot to ask.

It's been so long since I started playing, but does the game not emphasize in the tutorial that you should pause, like, super often? I swear it does, and also it is one of the random gameplay tips that come up when you start the game.

Though I feel like I had an unfair advantage because I watched all the dev videos posted on the Kickstarter that show the dev playing the game properly, so I knew pretty much from the outset that fighting fires with crew is for chumps when you have a perfectly good airlock, and that you should be pausing constantly and lining up all your weapons to fire at once.

Because resolution matters.

I don't like to doubt Vinny or Drew, obviously it's their job to know this stuff and they're both pretty kick ass editors, but when they say bitrate is what matters over resolution i just don't buy it anymore. Everything you see being recorded in 1080p everywhere else is always significantly sharper looking than what GB produces. I don't know why, i know little about this stuff but i'm not blind either.

This is a high quality video, damn Alex.

The display rate of a video on video games is important because it best gets across the performance of the game, being able to see the 60fps and any stuttering is important.
Obviously that doesn't matter for a game like FTL, but this is pretty damn sharp.
