Subterfuge sounds like a game I would have been really into in HS that would have ruined a lot of friendships.

@nickcapozzoli: And we're happy to have you! (It was definitely meant as a compliment.)

Oh, eternal misassigning of "game I like" with "game I find quality".

Hey, Nick! Followed him on Twitter for a while. Now we have two delicious Italian names to pronounce here.

I too have an Italian name that's just Cs, Zs, Ls, and some vowels formed out of cavatelli and thrown at a wall of marinara.

Subterfuge seems a lot like the browser game Tribal Wars. That game was all about communicating with your tribe and the other tribes in the region, deciding who you'd betray, who you'd merge with, and who's honor (and precious resources) you'd defend. But if you want to play a Subterfuge that takes years rather than months and gives you tens of thousands of players to mistrust rather than a handful, Tribal Wars is your jam.

--------------------------

I was in this tribe once, ran by one of those dudes who thinks that hard numbers don't apply to him because he'd get us through anything with his hard-nosed grit and guts. And there's this tribe beneath us, gobbling up everything in sight. We weren't small by any means, we were a top 50ish tribe, but compared to them? A top 20? Peanuts. We would've been demolished in a day had we angered them.

So what does our astute leader do? He decides we're going to take them on. Something about fortune favoring the bold.

We would've been toast. So six or seven of my tribe mates and I, a few folks who trusted each other because we'd been playing together in this world for a few months now in a prior tribe, decided we needed to stage a coup to save ourselves. We knew our king's schedule, you see, and we had some real heavy-hitters among us. When the time came, he woke up in the morning completely fine...and came home from school with all of his villages conquered and their riches spread among his former allies. He had to reset, angrily.

I then worked on a diplomatic salve to treat the wounds of pomposity he caused with the tribe beneath us. These conversations turned fruitful quickly, and I ended up wrangling my trusted buddies and myself over to that other tribe in a huge merge on New Year's Day. Over holiday break, when many players are understood to be inconscient, we formed the new biggest tribe in the world and bellowed out our presence.

Shit was so ill.

Wasn't really a fan of the guest contributor period of Giant Bomb, just seemed like a poor fit for this site.
