Okie (deriving from the name Oklahoma) was a pejorative used to negatively refer to mid-west farmers who lost their farms in the Dust Bowl and Great Depression of the '30s and were forced to migrate westwards to California and the fertile pastures of places like Salinas and were meet with prejudice and exploitation along the way. It is NOT used to denigrate southerns.
 
I wonder how Mr. Gertsmann would feel if people referred to him by a certain appellation which denotes a suburban White person who believes they are an inner city Black person?
