No, YOU ALL have lost ur god damn minds. Portal 2 was okay, but Portal 1 had so many shining moments, I barely remember 2. Wheatley right?

@bluefoxxy: Well it's a lot easier to remember an entire game when it's under 2 hours long and has basically two prominent climaxes crammed near the end of the 1 hour mark. Portal 2 had a dozen or so more hilarious and memorable moments, but I won't try to convince you.

So will it break your mind if I say I thought Portal 1 was vastly overrated and have no interest at all in 2? It shouldn't cause guess what, different folks have different opinions :) Someone else's opinion isn't shit just because it's not the same as yours.

I haven't listened to Jeff's rationale, but:

Portal 1 was a clever puzzle game with a funny twist to it. Portal 2 was a funny game with some puzzle-y bits stuck on. Everything that made the sequel good was unrelated to the actual gameplay itself, which was relatively straightforward and uninspired, excepting some of the co-op stuff. As entertaining as it might have been in a 'listen to them talk as you walk around' kind of way, it was not a better game than Portal 1.

I won't deny old aperture. That was pretty cool. Big ass silo door opens to show a tiny door. Point for Portal 2.

So there is a argument of the merits of Portal 2 going on here? Let me contribute. I thought the game was good but the middle section holds it back. I found many of the puzzles in that part not great, often the solution was finding the portal-able surface in the scenery. I never liked Cave Johnson as much as Weatly or Glados either, so I never had that to fall back on.

The Bombcast has become increasingly late in recent weeks.

I'll hazard a guess and say it was the freshness and surprise. The gameplay itself was mind-blowing in the first game. The puzzles in 2 were still cool and clever, but didn't have quite the same effect. And the moment you broke out of the test area was a complete shock. Until that point, you had no idea there even was a plot, and suddenly you had to know what would happen next.

I'm partial to Portal 2, but I can see why the first may have had more of an impact on some people.

To add to the Portal 2 debate (I guess)  Portal 2 is alright, but I like Portal 1 better as well. Portal 2 drags on to long, and in the middle starts to feel tedious. I feel it was much more delightful as a short puzzle game with a crazy twist. I think the fact that I can pass the first one in an hour has a lot to do with that as well.

Portal 2 is still great, but not as good as Portal 1.

I will agree in as much that Portal 1 had more impact because it was such a surprise. Most people, including myself, didn't expect anything in particular from Portal, other than it being a throwaway bonus in The Orange Box. And the fact that I had zero expectations going in is what made it so special and memorable. Portal 2 on the other hand, had to compete with huge expectations, and the fact that I liked it so much just goes to show how well it managed to live up to my expectations.

Understand and managing expectations about games and other forms of entertainment is something that I've thought a lot about since the early days of this generation. And I truly believe that the biggest contributing factor behind people's reactions and emotions towards the entertainment they consume is their pre-conceived expectations. The other major factor being social pressures and influences, which are themselves in turn tied into the formation of said expectations. It's a simple enough theory, but you'll be surprised how easily even the most jaded of people get carried away with their emotions and don't even realise it.

Listening to this podcast over the years and getting to know these 4 guys, their social dynamic, their individual tastes, etc. and the evolution of all of that over time, has almost served as a case study for this theory of mine!

OK, so maybe playing Portal 1 had a bigger impact, but that doesn't make it a better game. The impact is due to the novelty of the original game. Trying to look at what the better game is, you have to look at quality, not personal stuff like when and where you played it. Jeff uses that same logic to attack people who call Halo 1 the greatest FPS of all time, or say beat-em-ups are a legitimate genre.

@CornBREDX: When I got done with that game, I felt glad to have experienced it but didn't always feel like I was having a ton of fun with the gameplay like with the first. Wheatley was awesome but he his weak spots, I wasn't a huge fan of how that ended up. Great game, just not nearly as good as Portal 1.

It's cute. And funny. But, unfairly inaccurate. I think people who would prefer 'Still Alive' or the others that prefer 'Portal 2' could agree that both games are different enough. It's why someone could either love one or the other more. I don't mean to be a buzzkill, just saying is all.

@firecracker22: The image isn't 100% accurate but it's something I noticed a bunch. Some Portal 2 puzzles were very suppressed in that way, I think that's fair to say. Find the white wall was the solution numerous times.

You shouldn't find any fights hard near the end of Darksiders. I remember there was a combination of buffs that made you basically invincible. Or maybe it was just Stoneskin Lv. 4.

Also:

Brad:"Does it ever open up, it feels very linear."

Will Smith:"How far are you?"

Brad:"First dungeon."

You mean the goddamn Deku Tree?
