Their response to the problems though is "well, I don't wanna judge the system by its launch, so I'm gonna buy one." Yet the sheer thought of buying a Vita to play Persona 4 or Sound Shapes bears a shudder followed by and exhausted sigh of capitulation...

Your Vita arguement doesn't hold much weight considering they aren't much for portable gaming.

@Marokai: You're saying too much prescient things with merit. Kudus but nobody wants to read or hear that dude. Objectivism ruins fun just like fact-checking ruins the show. Bombcast was built on joke pie energy drink goofball nerfball quote animations look-at-me slag

There is a site which doesn't exist yet. Someone will invent it -- maybe 2020 -- and that will be where people will begin to understand video games and video game systems beyond the childish nostalghia-soaked generation we're still in.

The decatur line is not the internet, as in everything changed when the internet came to consoles even Nintendo. The line is where human action and reaction changes to what video games actually are.

Wii U: A new console that's barely catching up to the 6 year old competition and will likely be technically obsolete again in a year, meaning probably yet again no quality 3rd party support. Has a confounding user integration that doesn't allow portable IDs, locking content not to an account but to hardware, even though you have to clearly register an account online. Also, great, you can buy a lot of games directly from the store, but the premium bundle comes with a whooping 32 GB of storage.

The difference is that you know Nintendo will support this thing, but Sony doesn't seem to be doing so with the Vita.

Cheesecake can be made with a base of pastry, sponge cake or hard biscuit, making the term "Cheesecake" more a broad umbrella of cheese-based dessert items - it can fall under the definitions of cake or pie depending on the variation of base. A Pop-Tart is not a tart, McDonalds Apple Pies are actually turnovers, and shooting stars are just burning space debris. God damn you all, for your needless and frivolous definitions for foods.

That is probably the most inane thing I've ever had to get off of my chest on an internet forum, but I'm so glad I did it.

They keep harping on the New Super Mario Bros. games. Sure they aren't the greatest but it's not like it's the only mario games we get, it's like they've completely forgotten about Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 that came out not that long ago and no doubt Nintendo will come out with another 3D mario game that will be great, NSMB is pretty much the B side of mario games.

Also haven't there been talks about some rearranging at Nintendo? they'll be bringing in new directors. Let's hope that these people have the guts to change some stuff up for the other games in their library. As far as i'm concerned Mario is the series that haven't gone stale yet.

Holy sound like a bunch of cranky old men. Man, I can't imagine the toll of having to consume video games as a job, which probably robs a lot of fun out of playing them, but the Nintendo crabby rants on this Bombcasts sound like they're coming out of 80 year old gamer's mouths. For Brad and Jeff to not play Skyward Sword, what I think is another beautiful Nintendo game, seems like a pretty big gap in a gameplay resume, and a shame to miss out on a pretty awesome game. The talk of the crappy way Nintendo handles, or doesn't handle, the ownership of purchased digital content is spot on though for sure. Major mis-step.

I'll admit it is weird to hear the the general gaming media (including the conversation on this podcast) run through the litany of issues that seem to be baked into the Wii U, yet a number of journalists were tweeting about how they were rushing out to get the system.

I've put it down to blind enthusiasm - which if my past bad purchase decisions says anything, comes with the territory of loving video games and the systems they are played on. Still, after hearing all the issues and seeing some pretty lackluster game play (those ports...yikes), I'm tempering my Wii U curiosity until the dust settles a bit.

Didn't buy a Wii U.  I won't be buying one until your 3D Mario's, Zeldas and Metroids are released for the console.  Based on the launch line up alone it baffles me why anyone would even worry about purchasing one at launch.  The lack of a true AAA Nintendo made game at launch really tempered my enthusiasm to purchase at launch.   N64 had Mario 64, Gamecube at least had Luigi's mansion.  Wii had Zelda TP.  What does the Wii U have?  New Super Mario Bros U.  Which should have been a free pack-in at the least instead of a full priced retail game.  Considering it is the third 2d Mario released in a very short time period.   Based on this I had no problem fighting off pre-release hype and waiting to purchase.   The smartest thing Nintendo can do in my opinion is to start announcing some projects that fans will be looking forward to as soon as possible.   Get the hype going for the new Galaxies and Zelda with trailers to show that Nintendo is supporting there new console fully.   Because I never buy a Nintendo console to play anything other then Nintendo made games.

Early to mid 30's is middle aged now? I'm f***ed.

I'm 24 and I thought Skyward Sword was tired, boring bullcrap. And Nintendo is being awfully lazy lately. And I'm a huuuuuge fan of their older stuff, even the GameCube. So...I don't think that has anything to do with it.

Unless you consider a 24-year-old to be an old man. 30 isn't middle-aged under any circumstance.

Some of the games I think about most are not from Brad's age range of 8-15... I mean yes any game from SNES falls in there for me (1989-96), and yes some of those are very important. But Fallout 1 and 2, Xcom, all PC games are ones I didn't play till college and those tweak my Nostalgia center as much as NES games did. i remember playing Soul Reaver as fondly as playing Chrono Trigger. So yeah my PSONE/PC days are as cool in my mind as my NES/SNES days.... And PS3 hits me that way now every now and again! PS2/Gamecube might have been a dip for me... But that wasn't age, it was the systems....

@Brad about "computer" vs "video" game worlds. I was heavily on the computer side in the 80s and 90s, as were many of my friends, but we were still very aware of video games because they had such a bigger presence: Saturday morning cartoons! In toy stores! Rentals that weren't in only one store at a shady strip mall!

I think a lot of the computer game world was. I remember first hearing about John Carmack when he discovered how to get side-scrolling working on a PC for Commander Keen. But in was in the context of PCs catching up to consoles: the feat was described positively as being "just like Super Mario Bros."

And regarding the innovation level in mainline Mario games I think you're all accurate, except for overlooking one new thing in Super Mario Galaxy: the use of a locked camera and forced perspective in some levels to make them play like a different style of game. For example, zooming out and looking the camera in a side view to make one section play much like a 2d platformer. I thought this was an interesting way to mix in some gameplay styles beyond standard 3d platformer gameplay.
