So...when? Three experts flew to Iceland to provide us with some answers. EVE Online Fanfest 2013 was host to three "Make EVE Real" panels, in which leading scientists broke down how some of EVE Online's technology may show up sooner than you think. Technobabble, ahoy!

Fascinating interviews Patrick. I like having some non-gaming related content on the site every once in a while.

Really enjoying this EVE online content. I'm one of those people, like Patrick, who's very interested in the game's culture and the experiences that people have as opposed to the playing of the game itself. I think the way Patrick approached this fanfest is fantastic and innovative. Great work.

@bgdiner: This perspective always baffles me.

If you want to be a part of the culture, be a part of the culture. Standing back and staring all wide-eyed at people playing a game - while inevitably making snide jokes about spreadsheets - comes off as more than a little patronizing and shitty.

Seriously, if you like the community and stories so much, just... play it and engage with it, otherwise you sound kinda scummy. Same with Dwarf Fortress.

reading the stories of dwarf fortress is a million times more engaging than playing it for the vast majority of people, along with EVE.

@animasta: No it isn't. The vast majority of people have never played Dwarf Fortress, so that statement in and of itself is disingenuous.

It took me three hours following a guide to the letter before I the game 'clicked', and I was able to learn on my own and everything made sense. Dwarf Fortress isn't very hard once you learn the inputs, which remain unreasonably baffling, but if you do, it is without a doubt the most complex and engaging single-player game of all time.

If you're truly too casual to get into it yourself, then I suppose Boatmurdered and Headshoots and the like are entertaining enough, but they are a pale shadow of their source material.

I don't think it makes sense to come down so hard on people who are intimidated by games like EVE Online and Dwarf Fortress, yet are fascinated by the stories generated by their subcultures. We don't have time to dedicate ourselves learning about everything that catches our eye, and that's why interviews like the ones I conducted for EVE Online help bridge the gap. You get a window into the world without having to visit there. Is it more fulfilling to visit the world itself? Sure. But not everyone will. That's my job.

To truly get into EVE is a huge challenge. There is a lot to learn and you can approach it from any of dozens to hundreds of angles at any given time due to it's sandbox nature. Getting into a really good organization is the greatest way to do that (I'm doing that now with Goonswarm Federation, 3 days in). This is not a game where it's worth playing solo really ever.

Dwarf Fortress really is easy though, it's difficulty to learn is really, really overblown by people who can't get over the ASCII. All the major commands are listed on the main screen.

Love this science talk. We're in the future~

It's always been the concept of a space elevator that fascinates me the most, and I truly believe that a space elevator is the most important piece of space tech we could be developing right now. When we finally get one built, that'll change everything with how exponentially easier it will be to mine and travel at a significantly reduced cost.

Anyone who's played Kerbal Space Program extensively will know how much easier it is to travel once you're in space, as opposed to how hard it is to get there in the first place.

@patrickklepek has proven himself to be one of the best interviewers in journalism.

I would love to see him do some political stuff or really anything outside of his comfort zone. The ability to think so incredibly critically about what is being said while the interview is conducted and guide it in ways that would make it more interesting while still being able to keep things moving with talking points that seem seamlessly interwoven is a true skill that seems incredibly absent within the media. This is, by far, the most intellectually interesting part of Giant Bomb. While I love the tasteful reviews, quick looks, and general commentary from the whole team, the interview dumptruck (maybe just Patricks presence on the team in general) has added an air of professional journalism that is both refreshing and deeply intriguing as a student of the trade. I don't know how popular these segments may be, but they are surely incredible. Thank you for all this. I look forward to so much more.

I apologize for the horrible grammar.

It is not so much that we don't want to be involved in the culture. I would get involved in EVE online in a heartbeat if I could possibly commit the time necessary to be any good at it. I unfortunately do not have time or resources (a decent computer) to play EVE.
