I don't like how emotionally invested I get into this, but ask anyone with any kind of combat experience, and they will take their chances against a bat over a knife any day. People accidentally kill themselves with knives. They're really, really, unbelievably, shockingly devastating for how simple and small they are.

This is what I never understood about that original debate. So much credit was given to the reach of the bat, but really the only place that you're in danger of being put down or killed with a bat strike is a perfect shot to the head (provided we're not going up against some professional baseball player or Casey Jones here). I always felt like Jeff G had it right: for a knife all you have to do is rush the person and start going nuts. Logistically speaking as well (and this is a very dark thing to say), there's a reason why more people are killed by stabbings than by blunt objects. And I'd wager most statistics about blunt object deaths are largely by something like a hammer rather than a baseball bat.

I too don't know why I'm so emotionally invested in such a stupid yet dark topic.

Nintendo is not in a position to influence mfg at TSMC. Tough spot for them but their buying power isn't big enough to move that needle. They are certainly up there, but at $85 Billion they are small in the chip race against the likes of AAPL, GOOG and TSLA.

@sethmode: Right! You can see a bat coming. And to avoid damage, all you have to do is turn your body and duck your head. A knife will put you in serious danger no matter where it contacts you. Legs, back, head, arms, anywhere. A baseball bat needs to hit skull or opposite of a joint to do damage, and even then, you'd need a massive amount of windup to get that done.

The reporting and result on the next Switch revision(s) reminds me of the Star Fox Grand Prix rumors and how that might have been a case of crossed wires with Starlink: Battle for Atlas and the Nintendo Switch exclusive content.

The way the bubble letters are cascading in the wrong direction drives me nuts about the logo but otherwise enjoying the show - hopefully Jeff smoothes out some of the sound cues a little as well!

It's fun to see Jar Time get a spiritual successor with another Jeff at the wheel.

Another good show. Dude it's crazy how easily you fit in with the GB crew, like you were here from the beginning.

I could be wrong, but I don't think we're going to see a Switch Pro. I think Nintendo is going to milk the original Switch models for all there worth because of how they are still selling like crazy. And this pandemic isn't going away anytime soon thanks to this new Delta version now wrecking everything, which means lack of resources needed for a upgraded Switch. I believe the next Switch, if we get another one and Nintendo doesn't do something different, will be the Switch 2 around 2023 - 2024.

Yeah, Sega is weird. They've really embraced the PC side of things in the last 8-ish years or something, but then you look at a game like Persona 5 and they just refuse to knock the ball in the goal.\

@sethmode

Naturally it's faster to kill someone with a knife. But if you get a decent hit off with the bat, it's unlikely to me that the knife-wielder can still keep his charge up, keep his grip firm and manage to stab the other in the torso. If this first encounter went right for the bat-user, at that point it becomes a point where they just have to keep wailing on the other until he eventually dies.

CHOW TIME! Thanks for keeping us full, Jeff the third!

@onemanarmyy It's definitely strange, but it feels like the distinction between SEGA as a whole and the Atlus subdivision. Most of their weirdest decisions, such as the whole P5 sharing debacle and Persona not coming to more platforms, tend to come on Atlus properties. And it sounds as though most of those decisions come out of Atlus Japan.

SEGA and the US side of Atlus seem to be doing everything they can to smooth over those, and SEGA generally seems to have really embraced the community and content sharing - look at what they've been doing with the likes of Yakuza and even Sonic in recent years in terms of putting out tons of behind-the-scenes info and bringing 'content creators' on to collaborate with them around big releases.

The swaying thing for me is "If you win against the bat, there's a better chance that you're gonna be okay - you could certainly sustain an internal injury, but there's a much higher chance you could go up against a knife, ostensibly 'win' the fight, and still sustain fatal wounds in the process."

I think the difference is that most people aren't some sort of Tier-1 / Seal-Team / Operator type person. I agree that in the hands of a professional, it's knife all day every day. That's why they strap knives to their ankles and not Louisville Sluggers.

But as a non-professional, it boils down to intimidation more than anything else. And like peacock feathers and trucks, when it comes to intimidation, bigger is better.

@mach_go_go_go: You are certainly not wrong that intimidation is important, but that changes nothing for me. Personally someone with a bat doesn't scare me at all, but I think someone with a knife could kill me (sadly, I have experienced the latter first hand).

An important looked over part of all of this I think is that the original email was stating it was an aluminum bat which is like...no discussion to be had anymore. No one is winning against a knife with a bat designed to CUSHION THE BLOW.

Just for folk wondering:

The GPD Win 3 and the Aya Neo both "launched" early this year. GPD is a very established brand who makes semi-quality products these days and Aya Neo is new but seems fine according to influencers and folk who actually got theirs. I almost bought a Win 3 (I prefer to not have to rely on custom software by a random company) but ended up passing because even the influencers mentioned how truly horrible the slide out touch keyboard is. Was waiting for the GDP Win 3 Max (the clamshell model with a physical keyboard) but then Steampal might exist so...

=====

Also, the real answer is that, all things being equal, whoever gets the first hit in wins. If we are two untrained people then you aren't going to power through getting smacked with a bat to knife someone and it boils down to whether you stab me before I smack you. Bat probably won't be a one hit kill but it will basically be a real life stunlock. And if you stab me I am going to go into shock while you finish me off.

Similarly, if we are both in the final fight of a Joe Taslim movie, you might be able to power through getting hit by a bat but I am gonna hit you again. Similarly, I might be able to power through a knife wound for a bit but you are gonna stab me like forty times. Same with the idea that we are dodging each other's swings/thrusts.

Hence, it boils down to who gets the first real blow in. Which favors range.

2 episodes in and I think GrubbSnax has a lot of potential but I think Grubb needs to work on the pacing of the show or they should add a second host to create more of a natural conversational tempo. Grubb is talking so fast that he's getting out of breath in between sentences and answers. That's a bit too stressful for my liking. I'm spending more time focusing on his delivery than the points he's making.

I guess I'm just getting old but Grubb is talking too damn fast "shakes fist".

It's really nice to have a show that's a direct communication with the audience.

Jeff / Jan, I was thinking it might be nice to have some subtle background music to lift the production a little.

"Knife vs Bat" needs parameters. It's never really clear if the debate is about the weapons conceptually, if the participants are conceptual or if it's the people answering, if the goal of the theoretical interaction is surrender/incapacitation or death, are the participants both starting alert in a combat arena or is someone getting jumped? Like, if the goal is for Jeff to make Brad say "I don't want to fight anymore" then they're basically equal. If the goal is for Joh Matrix to kill Snake Plissken then it's probably knife, I guess.

It just seems kind of pointless to argue over which would "win" when it's totally unclear what the conditions are.
