Gah! 3 minutes into this and I'm digging my WiiU out the closet so I can replay. It's staggering how good this game is and how immediately is communicates what is great about it.

Great game, cool that Abby is revisiting it, but yeah, that sensor bar positioning looks less than comfortable for Abby.

@ybbaaabby The star bit collection isn't that important. Minute-to-minute, you can blast common enemies with 1-2 star bits to lightly stun them, but the game difficulty never really warrants bothering with this at all. However, throughout the game, occasionally you'll need anywhere from like 200-2000 star bits saved up to open up pathways/levels.

So I'd say that precision use of the star bits is rarely necessary, but gathering a fuckload of star bits is generally pretty necessary.

Mario Galaxy 2 is the best 3D Mario game, I think. It takes the concepts of the first and does even more cool shit. I'd love to see these on Switch.

I guess we’ll never get a sequel to Steal My Sunshine now.

I guess it wouldn’t be as fun without Dan anyway!

I actually really like the vibe that Rosalina gives that she just wandered in from another genre of game: I imagine that for Mario she seems like this ineffable alien being.

Also I really want to play this again now, but I don't have any way to hook up my Wii, or even read my disk in a PC emulator. I would totally buy this again for Switch.

Abby, you might need to move the sensor bar over to your monitor. Just for your own comfort. You end up using the cursor a LOT more than you might remember.

Thanks for playing this great game, can't wait for more! :D

@ybbaaabby For the next one you could use the built-in sensor bar on the Wii U gamepad, it will work great without requiring a wire, you can even tell the Wii U to not display the game on it to save battery. I think it works as a sensor bar even if the game isn't displayed on the screen? Though showing the game on it might be useful sometimes if your capture solution adds latency? Your call, I'm mostly just worried about your arm :(

I've also been replaying mario galaxy, working towards 200%, and been struck by the thematic overlap with Outer Wilds. Obviously there is the tiny planets and gravity based gameplay. But there is also a lot of imagery overlap between the two and they literally have exactly the same ending.

Having to constantly lean back lol. I'd just move a bit further back when playing this game, you need to point at the screen a lot.

After Sunshine set such a high bar it will be such a bummer to play all these inferior Mario games but we appreciate the sacrifice!

Alright, you wanna know my favorite design bit in this game?

If you align your nunchuck to whichever bit of ground Mario is standing on (sideways, upside down, whatever) the stick orientation is always as if the camera was behind Mario's back.

Seriously, try it. It actually makes the flippy sections a lot easier to play.

Like VR, motion controls are fine as long as the developers properly take into account their limitations.

Honestly, the pre-Wii Motion Plus era of motion controls for the Wii is kinda rough. I think having an IR sensor/point built into the Wii Remote is well implemented in a bunch of games, and gives mouse-like control over menus. But the basic accelerometer isn't nearly as efficient. There's far too many uses on the Wii where "blindly waggle Remote" or "blindly waggle Nunchuk" is analogous to a button press, but the developer was so short on buttons to use that they assigned the action to waggle (Super Mario Galaxy, for instance). For every 1 WarioWare or something that uses the accelerometer inventively, there are like 50 games where waggle was just another button press. The controls in Twilight Princess are a mess, where free aiming with the IR sensor is actually pretty fast and responsive, but having to waggle for every single sword swing and shield bash is just excessive for what could be a simple button press.

The Wii Motion Plus having gyroscopic sensors did a better job of making good on the implied original promise of the Wii and gave it more fidelity for say, if you want to swing a sword around.

Don't watch Colin Hanks in Dexter. Do watch him in The Good Guys (2010 TV series) and Fargo season 1.
