I only just made my way through the rest of Metal Gear Scanlon to this, and holyyyyyy shit. I'm not sure I've ever been so on edge about watching someone else play a videogame before. Don't get me wrong, I'm pretty amazed at how well Drew did for a first time but goddamn was it stressful watching him jog casually around the base, maybe not quite understanding (or not caring?) how crucial stance is to noise and visibility.

I hope it's something he gets the hang of quickly in TPP, because I don't know if my heart can take it.

The best part of this is how happy Dan is, and how much he clearly wants Drew to like the game.

Keifer with less personality is a lot better than that overly-gravely voiced Hader... I can hardly tolerate that voice... ugh.

Never complained before but 23 minutes in and DAN SHUT UP. I LOVE YOU BUT FOR THE LOVE OF GOD THIS IS not dan's opinion hour, or dan's walks you through how to hold a guy, or dan teaches you how to play metal gear solid. Let him experience it by learning himself. stop holding his hand and telling him every detail of every little thing before he has a chance to do it himself. how is he gonna enjoy the game where theres always someone telling him how to do everything.

Quoted for truf.

I just finished MGS 4. I was going to start Metal Gear Rising and then get into MGS 5 after that. Without any spoilers, is it worth it to play Ground Zeros before MGS 5?

painfull to see people use the primary un-intuitive control scheme over the one where X is reload , B is crouch , etc

I love that Drew called Dan out on all his explanations. During MGS1, I compared it to playing with a proud developer of the game sitting next to you, pointing out all the cool/hidden stuff.

I like that Dan keeps talking about all the child soldier stuff in The Phantom Pain when Sons of Liberty had so much about Raiden being a child soldier and how telling it is that Dan doesn't know about all the children in Metal Gear 2.

Looking back on this, it sure hurts knowing TPP sucked. It's just Peace Walker with better gameplay.

Going back to watch this after having played through MGSV TPP, the thing that caught my attention was Dan's (wrong) claim that Sacco and Vanzetti were innocent. Ballistic evidence proves beyond any reasonable doubt that Sacco shot and killed the two security guards in the murder-burglary. Vanzetti was at least guilty as an accomplice in the murders even if he hadn't pulled the trigger. They were both caught red-handed carrying the weapons used in the crimes when they were arrested (despite telling police they were unarmed).

It's curious how the meme of their innocence and "biased trial" took hold in the global media at the time and persists even to this day despite overwhelming evidence. They were avowed militant anarchists who called for and participated in crimes to effect the violent overthrow of the government. Their group, the Galleanists, carried out bombings on Wall Street (killing dozens and wounding over a hundred people) and at US embassies, in retaliation for their indictment. Before their execution they even called for the murder of the judge who sentenced them.

I wonder what Kojima intended by including that song in MGS4 and V? Was he sympathetic to them or highlighting the similarity between their militant anarchism and that of the "soldiers without borders"?

It was not the quality of their guilt on which they were convicted, but their beliefs. The judge had them put to death because they aligned with a violent anarchist group, and that was the extent of the substance in the trial. Nothing else met the bar of conviction at the time. That decades later certain facts can be discovered or inferred is not what is at issue with that trial, specifically, the ballistic evidence you reference, which was not available at the time in the proper integrity due to various factors. Ballistic forensics has advanced a lot since then; even then, that is ballistic evidence, not evidence of the conviction of the crime by the individual. Of course, that's not what the legal issue was in the case. The law isn't always as cut and dry as it would like to sound. The letter of the law is not really how it is actually carried out, as seen in parallel in contemporary cases of police-conducted killings and abuses, a somewhat inverse example of the same effect. The impact of the trial centers around that problem of judging character on an erroneous base, not facts, and that historical context was clearly significant for it to have taken root in memetic form as you describe. The sentiment associated with that event is not necessarily so simple as a direct transfer of their specific group's militant ideology.

@zoofame: It's worth mentioning that Metal Gear Solid 4 ended with a cover of that original song, and MGS4's ending was originally going to be Snake and Otacon being executed for war crimes. It's entirely possible that it was only really included in MGSV's opening so they could just say MGSV picks up where MGS4 ends in some capacity.

Drew's little "I know" when Dan tells him about pressing B to switch out weapons killed me. This is fun, but Jesus, Dan, let Drew figure shit out at least a little bit. He has, as he himself attests, played a videogame before.

@drew, five minutes in: "Who's that guy?"

Never picked up on that look to the camera before. Interesting piece of foreshadowing.
