Pst. Dan nightvision shows the cracks on cliffs you can climb. And upgrading nightvision it looks more clearer.

Did they change night vision from GZ to PP? It seems like the contrast was a lot better in Ground Zeroes and they were more useful (I think I'm on the second NV goggles).

Also, it might just be my tv, but is "night" surprisingly bright in Phantom Pain? I'm not getting caught by guards, and it doesn't look washed out, but it seems like the moon is just throwing out too much light.

I think it very well may be your TV. With mine properly calibrated, it's hard to see anything at night at any distance without night vision. WAY darker than what I've seen in Drew's videos so far. They may just have the gamma turned way up for recording purposes, though.

Regarding the NVGs, they do keep getting better as you upgrade them throughout the game.

Yeah, I'm with you on this one. I actually had never thought about this even being an issue until today, when another user on the forums said one of the reasons they preferred the Sneaking Suit was that they didn't have to do "controller micromanagement" in order to sneak up on someone. You know...not pushing the analog stick all the way. I still almost can't believe what I was reading, but there you go.

NOT ANOTHER POST TELLING YOU HOW TO ENJOY THE GAME: Just a fun tip ;]

You can hold up guards with their own gun. Sneak up on guard, Double-Tap RT for the 1-2 combo, then hold LT to snatch their weapon to stick the guard up and start interrogating(Sorry if you already knew this). Thanks for the epic series, guys!!

Oh wow, I've been wondering how to do this since I watched the crap out of the trailers. Dynamic CQC!

I use cardboard boxes for my camo needs.

(Also, I feel like the Battle Dress has some good all-around camo.)

Holding people up is not very useful though. It's like a way less effective grabbing and choking. It's much easier for it to go wrong and it's not nearly as effective at actually taking a guy out, since the guy will immediately get back up if an alert goes off.

It's waaay more effective at neutralizing an enemy as for the most part it does so for the entire length of your mission (or even longer).

If you just leave someone sleeping or stunned, they will eventually wake up of their own accord and then often radio in a report of the encounter.

The only way a held-up enemy is going anywhere is if you let someone find them and get them up or if you set off a full-on combat alert, in which case you've already got a bigger problem.

Tranquing an enemy from afar, kicking them awake once you make your way over to them and immediately pointing a weapon at them to hold them up is the best of both worlds.

You don't have to sneak up on them (as they're asleep) so you can't mess up the approach part of the hold up. You then have them totally neutralized so you don't have to worry about them waking up and radioing in an alert if you're taking your time to thoroughly searching and plunder an area.

That's why I was a bit surprised to find Dan teaching Drew to kick an enemy awake but then go through the long wait for him to stand all the way up for the opportunity to grab him and interrogate him, rather than just holding the dude up with a weapon the second he wakes up and interrogating him on the ground.

Having said that, in the grand scheme of things, it's not a huge problem at all. With so many ways to do things in the game, Drew will get through it one way or another.

@danryckert Dan, Please Please encourage Drew to aim down the sights with the tranq gun if you haven't already, I'm only halfway through and its painful to watch him try and take long shots without it. I found it helpful even up close. Let him know he doesn't have to hold the button down. Just tap it. Super helpful when the enemies start wearing helmets, it also zooms a little.

@apollodynamo: IIRC, there's a conversation where Ocelot specifically states that while he can understand Russian, he doesn't have the expertise to say it in English in the midst of listening to it, which makes it extremely hard to ensure you get all the details right while translating a panicking soldier's statement.

@drewbert Remember how you put a shotgun under the barrel of that assault rifle you were able to attach everything to? You can do the same thing in this game, so you can still have your shotgun.

@barrock: I don't know how bad your eyesight is, but you don't have to be anywhere near as good as Drew. There are a bunch of explosives, for one thing, as well as stuff you can order to attack enemies for you. I spent most of the game with a grenade/rocket launcher for when things get hairy. Straight up precise aiming is not an issue.

I'm sure it's in here already but 1) you CAN reach up on the ladder and grab a buy. It only knocks him out so it's a great way to get guys out of towers and ready to be fultoned.

2) If you kick a guy on the ground to wake him up, then point a weapon at him he'll put his hands on his head and stay down permanently (unless someone finds him or you trigger a combat alert). You can interrogate guys from this position as well.

Good luck D+D. May many more tips come your way throughout this arduous journey through MGSV!

I'm legally blind. It's all central vision, but peripheral is fine. I'd be playing on a 65 inch screen. The thing I was scared about was all the menus, but the upgrading looks pretty easy to understand visually. Plus the PS4 has a zoom feature. I probably just won't be able to get head shots constantly.

I wonder how many episodes it will be before Drew realizes that wearing a Sneaking Suit during broad daylight in the desert may not be as effective as...I dunno, Desert Camo?

It'll be a while if Dan keeps telling Drew that camo doesn't matter.

I got the GZ Sneaking suit as soon as I could choose my uniform and wore that until the Rank 2 Sneaking suit unlocked and then I've used that ever since... I've not bothered to try using any of the camo outfits because the muffled footsteps and thermal signature suppression from wearing the sneaking suit is so handy for my play style.

I've had no issues with being spotted yet and I'm 85 hours in at this point, I mean you can crawl to within 18 or so metres of people with no issues, so I don't feel like the uniforms are really necessary to get by...

I used to be able to slam a Dew as soon as I got up but now I get a really bad headache if I have sugary stuff right after waking. I have to eat something else first.

That stuff with the bear was pretty great.

I had seen tips on how to climb cracks but had yet to see one in the world. Thought I saw some but never got a prompt to climb. After watching this I finally saw a few and it's pretty handy for totally sneaking past some enemies. I prefer to tranq and fulton as much as I can though.

Supply Drops ARE the quick way to change. Once you get your Support team and helicopter developed it only takes 10 seconds or so for a supply drop to come in, so at least it gets better.

@grantdanasty: I didn't say anyone was good. I'm saying that Dan treating international relations with all the subtlety and nuance of wrestling characters is offensive. Saying that Russia were "bad guys in WW2" when they tried to look for alliances to curb Germany before the war but were rebuffed because western powers would rather deal with fascists than communists, and then went and killed more Germans than every other country in WW2 combined, is beyond the pale. I'm not going to get into an argument about Ukraine here, but acting like Russia is doing what they're doing purely to be "heels" and not understanding that it is at least at some level a reaction to the acts of western powers is stupid and very frustrating.

I have no problem getting into an argument about Ukraine. They may have been trying to look for allies against Germany I don't know but communism was as interested in taking over the rest of the world as fascism so I can see why people might not have wanted to help them until Germany was a threat to them. Real politick is the way things work. As well they invaded a sovereign nation (which Ukraine was) without any valid security reason. This is bad no matter how you look at it. It was just as bad (and stupid) when we did it to Iraq.

Am I mistaken that supply drops can be noticed by the guards? I was playing a mission yesterday and it seemed like a guard took notice when I did a supply drop near him. Although now that I think about it, the sun may have just set and he noticed the lights didn't come on because I had shut off the power a few minutes earlier.

Russia as a state actor is no worse than America, with its barely discriminate law flouting drone campaign killing hundreds of innocent civilians across Pakistan and Yemen, or historically sponsoring of right wing paramilitary death squads in operation Condor which Drew mentioned last episode. Hearing Dan say that America's always the good guys and Russia are bad guys is at the very least annoyingly ignorant, if not offensive.

I'm not sure how many of these Metal Gear Scanlon episodes the guys recorded before posting the first couple but goddamn hopefully Dan reads the comments or someone sits him down and politely asks him to shut up and let Drew play without all the backseat driving. 90% of the fun of this series has been watching Drew develop his own playstyle and strategies to tackle the madness that is a Metal Gear Solid game.

I don't want to rip on the guy to hard though. Dan is an affable guy and I'm sure he's just excited about the play through. He can't/shouldn't totally shut himself down but if he just turned the dial back a bit and let Drew discover/play this game a little more organically it would be more fun to watch.

I would be listening to podcasts otherwise. There are moments when shit pops off and I realize I didn't retain the last few mins of info but mostly I get it.

I know a lot of people play games while listening to podcasts and I feel like MGSV acknowledge this in game (and also eliminates the Codec) which is brilliant.
