Switch, where it's not only accepted to release a SINGLE ROM for $20 with no enhancements, but it's CELEBRATED... the Nintendo output issue is a two way street.

I think I mainly understand this game since it was designed by the director of Chulip for PS2, which actually has a lot of similarities to this. Chulip also has NPCs on schedules and you are going around trying to kiss people (similar to gathering love :P) so you can get up the gall to declare true love to your crush. The time-limiting mechanic in Moon seems like an extra tricky tweak even on top of that.

Anyways, I should definitely play this game, huh? Thanks for showing it off Ben, you did a good job w/that.

Onion Games also translated the manual and put it up online, which seems useful for an obtuse game like this: https://moon-rpg.com/en/sub/manual.html

The key designer of moon did an interview with Patrick Klepek the other day talking about how difficult it was to get this game working on Switch (and then localizing it in English for the first time on top of that). Dismissing it as simply putting out a ROM is moronic. https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/m7jw78/a-game-without-killing-the-story-of-moons-22-year-journey-to-leave-japan

Thanks for linking that

Even if it had been easy, IMHO the price of a game isn't about that...it's about whether the experience of playing the game is worth the price. $20 for a niche title (that some people really love and most people haven't even heard of) doesn't seem problematic to me. Could they sell more at a different price? Maybe. But so what?

This looks a lot like Chulip. That night time chat with the love spirit is identical to the Lovers Tree stuff. Like this was a kind of prototype for what eventually became Chulip.

post video edit: Oh, yeah, wow, this is definitely proto Chulip. Everyone should play Chulip. Chulip is an absolute delight. Genuinely. In the beginning it may look like it's one of those 'so bad/weird it's good' games but, no, it's just Good. Weird, and Good.

Wayneradiotv (of HL VR AI notoriety) streamed a play through of Chulip a while back, if you'd rather watch someone play it than play it yourself.

If you have to read an article to justify the cost there’s an issue here, this is the special Nintendo rule Jeff talked about ages ago.

Also, don’t call someone a moron because of a gaming opinion, get a hold of yourself.

You are very dismissive to the people that did the work to localize and port the game. If you can't even be bothered to read the article why even comment? Obviously it is also a niche game and won't sell a huge amount of units. Maybe you aren't a moron but you are very entitled.

Even for a PS1 game this looks terrible, right? Seems really interesting though, if completely incomprehensible.

@ph00p: Why is that an issue here? It’s an old game and historical context matters. If you turn on a silent film do you get upset they didn’t add VO?

There are obvious issues with the Switch and its store, but releasing an influential cult classic game for the first time ever in the US doesn’t seem like it to me. I get wanting visual work to have been done on this, but since it’s never been available here before, I think there’s something to be said for it being as unaltered from its original form as possible.

I don't know what to say other than "wow". Thanks for sharing, duders.

People really have not been able to fake that digitized claymation look. I lived through the 1990s and it's good to see some inscrutable lost parts of that culture come back.

Also, I say the main character looks like Plok.

Looks like a very cool game that you need a lot of patience for, maybe I'll try it sometime. Only gripe I have from looking at it is I wish the music kept going during scene transitions.

Not sure if I will play this, but I am super glad it exists in an easily playable modern form. I could easily see this being worth $20.

Toby Fox of Undertale fame is a gigantic fan of this game, and you can see the parallels.

This game has a Thelonious Monk reference. I'm in.
