If you aren't completely burned out of "real" roguelikes after Rogue, consider Tales of Maj'Eyal (available on Steam). Probably fails the Berlin Interpretation since you unlock classes and QOL stuff over runs but it does a really good job of providing structure at the start of a run and some really cool class design. Also, it is not curses based

Since Ben asked, there are 26 Levels according to the Steam page, so he's already made it more than halfway down. Though I guess he has to make it back as well.

I didn't hear any rule saying you couldn't use Cheat Engine. Just saying.

If this series has taught me anything thus far, with its single episode, is that the term 'Rogue-Like' and 'Rogue-Lite' are even less accurate a name for a subgenre than 'Metroidvania'. This is NOT to say that Rogue is, to me, a bad game; only that now that I have finally witnessed Rogue in action, the subgenre labels seem even more ridiculous.

I can't imagine how this could possibly go sideways.

Love this idea! Ben showed some good instincts here.

Some tips, since you asked:

• The food clock is notoriously strict in OG Rogue. You had a pretty good pace in your 2nd run. You want to be relatively thorough but quick.
• Learning to pick your fights and when to run is key to classic roguelikes. Ben figured this out quickly. If you go in with a hack 'n slash "kill everything" mindset you will die.
• Positioning is key. If you face multiple monsters, try to fight in corridors so only one can attack you. Ben did this early but kinda forgot later on.
• If at all possible, don't flee into the unknown! This is extremely dangerous as you'll likely run into more monsters and compound your problems.
• Use the discovered items key to keep track of what you've identified. There are very good and very bad scrolls and potions. After you've seen more of what's in the game, keeping track of what you've seen will help you determine how risky it is to use an unknown item.
• That room full of items and monsters you found early on was a treasure room, which are fairly rare.
• If memory serves, the Amulet of Yendor is on Level 26

@vinny This document has a lot of details which the hardcore Roguelike community would consider game mechanic spoilers, but it explains a lot. You may want to look at it and choose what to share with Ben as he plays. Personally, I'd consider a lot of it to be fair game.

If Vinny/Ben or anyone else reading this finds Rogue to be fun but too archaic, I highly recommend trying out Brogue. It's a free, complete reimagining of the original Rogue with surprisingly beautiful ASCII art and a streamlined UI. It's still very hard but not as unforgiving as the original and extremely well-designed. Might make for a fun finale for this series.

I don't think you can top a name like Dagney Roguemann.

I feel like nethack might be a better one to try if you wanted to pivot - it's a bit more modern while maintaining the spirit of original rogue. I'm going to enjoy this series either way - good luck Ben!
