Seeing the character sleeping in his space suit just has me thinking about how much it would suck to be stuck in a space suit for days at a time.

Vinny wonders if the trope of rogue AI will affect how people trust AI in the future. I think it's the other way round - that stuff is in fiction because people already have an inherent distrust or uncanny valley-like uncomfortableness around not just AI, but many technological advances.

For people into this game, I recommend "Lifeline..." for mobile devices. It's a really great text-based adventure game about an astronaut stranded on an unknown planet

I can't say I was deeply engaged with the game-play but I found myself grooving to the tunes as my mind wandered.

The music makes it really difficult for me to read the dialogue, it's busy in a way which kinda makes it hard to concentrate.

I'm okay with AI, I'm just wary of the ethics. Brains are just biological computers, what makes human consciousness different from a computer's? If there was an alien species that came and was able to read the wiring and code in our brains like we can with electronics, would it be as flippant about turning us off as we are about AI?

Hey @alex you say the game is 'not great' upfront but don't go into a whole lot of detail on why that might be? Other than the simple puzzles the rest of the QL and end seem generally positive. What about it stuck out to make you say you thought it was not great?? On the fence about jumping in on this.

Hudson-Cartier is the most Canadian name for a malevolent corporation you could think of. The one most steeped in Canadian history, at least. (Cartier was the explorer who "claimed" Canada for France, and the Hudson's Bay Company was the most prominent fur trading company/company when Canada became a country.)

I'm almost done with this game and it goes in some really good places and great stuff happens that is compelling to experience. the AI trope is taken to really great lengths and new places that pan out really well. The interactions that you have with the characters aren't exactly deep, but they are fairly well written, and have good lessons to tell about the human condition and what happens when people are put in tough spots. There are also side stories to tell about the colonists that are also worthwhile. the environments are also great and have unique music for each location. While you go back to the same general area you do get to see different parts from each area and the game does a good job of not re-using mechanics to death. the environments are well thought out and each of them has a theme attached to them that are also equally well thought out. At $10, this game is a great buy, and a good narrative based experience that is worth seeing and also has good reasons to do it again.

I thought Interstellar did a pretty good job teasing the AI trope with TARS.

I'm feeling a very "Persona Social Link" vibe: the framework, and the melancholy tone while deep diving into each character's psyche (between the bits of tank kicking, of course). Especially since Vinny was skim reading with that in-character affectation he always did.

The juxtaposition of the clean vib-ribbon looking UI vs the scummy overlay in the game is really offputting. They should have added the grime to the actual level art instead of using a static image that never changes.

Alex says experts are excited by AI and average people are not, but actually if you look around a lot of experts think AI is the greatest threat to humanity.

I think Vinny is overestimating the general public's willingness to accept self-driving cars /without/ an AI personality, to be honest.

People seem terrified of it.

The opening graphic is a lot like a game called The Turing Test that I saw Jonathon Blow play on Twitch a few nights ago (https://www.twitch.tv/naysayer88/v/87252234 start at around 5min).

But I guess a lot of these games devolve into general science fiction tropes after a while.

As long as it's relatively safe, well.. really safe, I can't wait for self driving cars! Man, not having to worry about traffic, being able to read a book while being driven to work, or better yet take a quick nap. Going to a party and having a few drinks and then having your car drive you back home. Not having to worry about parking because (I assume they will figure this out) your car will just go park itself somewhere.

I'm all for that. There is very little pleasure from driving a car in a big, busy city. Heck, people in Europe still stubbornly cling onto to manual gearshifts because it let's them be "in control" and enjoy the process of driving a car. Nothing fun about being stuck in traffic on a manual transmission.

I had this video on kinda low in the background, and the music made me freak out. Sounded like my HDD was completely thrashing itself. CLOSE CALL GANG!

On topic, this looks kinda neat. Might be a good game for me and the gf.
