Quick Look: BoxMaker

@sanj: It's sounds a lot like Super Mario World 1-1 music.

When I first heard that BoxMaker was a rip off of Super Mario Maker I thought "Well that's fine, Mario Maker just copied most of the level editor mechanics from Megaman Powered Up anyway" but goddamn, they really just copied Mario Maker.

It really speaks to the brand of Super Mario and Nintendo, when that game blows up and and this one doesn't. Maybe BoxMaker came first, ever thought of that?

After all, that game is from a company that ripped off Great Giana Sisters all those years ago: Super Mario Bros. is famously a launch game for the Nintendo Entertainment System, which launched in 1983. Great Giana Sisters is a game for the Commodore 64, which launched in 1982, a whole year before Samba De Amigo created Super Mario Bros.

The math checks out. My logic is flawless.

Those Digital Homicide games got wiped out, but BoxMaker is still standing strong (with MIXED REVIEWS I might add).

I can't help but feel grossed out by shameless clones like this, but their interest also has an intoxicating aura that makes them fascinating.

@tblockkiller: This is true, their patch came out on September 18th with the following patch note: "Now boxmaker is able to support the tool of game controller."

I want more brazen clones from China on steam. Or I don't. I probably don't.

I mean, if SEGA was able to sue that guy who made a spiritual succesor game to one of their properties based on the colors and patterns, Nintendo would definitely have the case here.

The koopas are unintentionally perfect. They look bored/depressed, as if in this virtual world, they know they've sold out for a cheap payday by being a part of this.

This should have been a two minute QL. They just place the coins in beat with the music and end it.

...Seriously that's the worst fucking idea, holy shit. This is the kind of thing that demonstrates why clones are USUALLY not a problem. People who make clones often fuck up fundamental elements because they don't understand their purpose in the gameplay system, and the clone comes out awful (see: PS Battle Royale trying ever so hard to not-be-exactly-like Smash Bros, and picking all the wrong elements to keep or remove). It's kind of interesting that this effect is still visible here, in a game where the audience is already assumed to be responsible for a bunch of the (level) design.

I bet that this one block type adds a substantial level of frustration to the overall player experience for the game. I haven't played Mario Maker, but I fucking GUARANTEE that they don't have a secretly-instant-death-trap-block built in like that. I bet crafty level designers can hack something like it together on their own by using more than one object - but Jesus Christ, there's no way that it's something they actively encourage you to do to people. That kind of untelegraphed trolling is how a 12 year old makes a video game.

Source: Over the summer I taught 12 year olds how to make video games. "Fake floor that actually kills you when you touch it" was a strangely common trick they came up with (which no peer-playtester seemed to enjoy...ever). That type of thing is fun for the level designer instead of the player. Shit is god damned ass-backward as fuck

I could imagine a narrative setup in a linear game where a carefully-choreographed instance of that style of trap could serve as a funny punchline. I can't think of any other excuses for it

If you're interested in platform game makers, check out Platfinity on Steam. It's a similar concept, but I started working on it before Mario Maker was announced, and it's quite a bit different. You can change all of the in game graphics and sounds. Oh, and there's no cloning or copyright infringement! heheh
