I would argue some of the character design and storytelling scaffolds for the narrative indicate the developer was tone-deaf. I mean, there's a mystical Chinese man owns an antiques shop and introduces the kids to the world of ghosts.

Does he look like this guy?

@vhold: The character is an exact rip of Gremlins, and that highlights the issue at hand. Some characters need to be left to the past.

I mean the game seems off but at the same time Jeff and and Ben missed the henchman giving out a mnemonic device for the pass code because they were mashing through everything and talking to each other and not playing really close attention. The song titles are a little much and the game seems a bit flat but they were trying something like this.

Oh and if you weren't a person of color in the 80's allow me to let you in on a little secret:

The 80s was extremely racist.

@quint: Nostalgia is kind of an older new. Not the oldest new, though. That would be new.

@zombiepie: Older chinese mystic in a curiosities shop could also be a reference to Gremlins. Just saying.

And again, some references shouldn't be made because the source material itself is problematic and exists in a different time. I'm sure Breakfast at Tiffany's is a fine movie deserving its usual praise.

I can't watch that movie because of Mr. Yunioshi.

Seconding: looks aggressively lame. Combat looks unnecessary, puzzles look just a bit too unclear to be enjoyable for me - not highlighting interactables and puzzle elements in some way works against this type of game play, in my opinion. Also, I really don't like how the sprites bob up and down. Minor quibble, but it is off-putting. The questionable writing just seals it; not for me.

Also, I'm a little surprised people here are defending racism just because it's based on a time and place where racism was much more prevalent and tolerated. The game might be set in the 80s, but it was released in 2018 - you have to go by today's standards.

Cuphead didn't include an African Dodger minigame, after all, even though it could have justified one based on its subject material (Bioshock Infinite did include something very similar, and you'll note that it isn't exactly played for laughs).

Yeah i'm not getting much in the way of nostalgia feels from this and I'm old enough to have been alive for most of that decade. It's not enough to have references to an era to get that feel, you gotta make it feel like that feel, dig?

GTA: Vice City. Now that had the feel.

Jeff is a Weeb! That animated cutscene was great, probably drawn by one guy who spent months keying it out. Though I fully support Jeff descent into anime. Also I was into this game for the first 10 minutes until I was fully out.

A good nominee for "Please Stop" is 80's nostalgia in video games. Not to say every game has that example, but tossing in 80's references with neon gradients and synth into a video game and saying "80's, YEAH!" is now reaching. Blood Dragon was the end-all, be-all of that.

That person probably did not understand that not everything has to move all the time, it looks jittery and overanimated. Set up a few still shots, make the most of your backgrounds, and just chill out. Even the close-up was overanimated. And those can be so easy to do! It's even more productive to cut corners like that, animators do it all the time.

Also, this is an 80s inspired "cartoon homage" right? Cartoons in the 80s had, like, three key-frames of animation per 10 seconds of footage.

This game doesn't know if it wants to be E.T. or G.I. Joe and it's really weird.

This game's tone-deaf aping of 80s U.S. culture reminds me of Beat Cop. The makers of this thing really don't grok any of the tropes they are trading in.

The aesthetic gives me a real Zombies Ate My Neighbors vibe.

This game has a quality game over screen.

That is all.

Sad to see these guys shitting on the game. I like the look and the gameplay, and I thought the 80s Saturday morning cartoon recorded on a VCR look was amazing.

It was really hard to watch Ben struggle with this game. The game wasn't even on my radar and now I am going to pick it up.

There's always posts like this in Steam reviews and on websites defending bad games in strange ways. Probably connected to the developer somehow, or someone that doesn't want to regret their purchase.

Not connected to the game in any way. And didn't purchase the game until after watching this quicklook. Assumptions are fun though.

This game was on my wishlist until the early reviews told me the game was just like 'REMEMBER THE 80s???" and i have better things to spend my money on.

I played this at PAX South this year. I did not like it too much.
