I can't believe some of the negative comments.. you just don't get how great this game is unless you play it for a few hours.. It will win you over man..

And what 's with the big *SIGH* when they started talking about tendency... It seems like this crew is so quick to condemn something they can't completely understand in 3 minutes.

It's clear based on how he's playing that he's not being careful like he should be.. And as well, half the crew there isn't even giving it a serious chance before it even STARTED! Like "Kill yourself off man.. do it.. let yourself get killed". Talk about not even being serious about explaining what the game is all about and how to get better.

There are some redeeming moments in there, but for the most part it's a half assed unprofessional condemnation and joke about a seriously great and innovative game.  To each their own I guess. It just seems to be a slap in the face of the developers to not even give it a serious chance.

Maybe I need a reality check, I think I'm taking it hard because I love the game and I want these guys to sell many copies.. :)

@DrBroel: I have to agree and even though healing items used stay gone it's not to hard to find some more crescent grass on the next enemy.  I was watching him run around with 10% health into mobs of 3 enemies and cringing.

having beat the game 2 times now it's kinda hard to believe Vinny is really 6 hours into the game right here.  That being because one of his characters is Level 10 and the other is Level 6.  Wtf?  Do you not level up your character at all.  You level up really fast in the game.  At 6 hours I'm probably already at level 40 or so.

Having played this game as well as all the big releases now and the year coming to an end.  Demon's Souls is sooooo easily the best game of 2009.

The first level doesn't even look that hard. Vinny just seemed to be making really stupid mistakes.

Okay I have to object. This video does not accurately represent the game. The problem is Vinnie is playing the game dumbly (not poorly). At the 20 minute mark he is descending a stair case that is basically the last thing you need to complete before opening up a shortcut. Shortcuts in this game are EXTREMELY important. When you die, shortcuts make the amount of level that you have to repeat significantly less. Not only is there a shortcut at the bottom of the stairwell at the 20 minute mark, there is also an armor set and a ring that gives your health a significant upgrade, which you keep even if you die (the ring makes the game MUCH easier). So Vinnie basically has 3 more enimes before reaching a HUGE checkpoint and chooses to keep his health at 10% instead of using one of the 13 health items he has. It's dumb. Even if he is conserving health items, I can think of few places in the game better to actually use them than that spot.  Given that the ring he is about to get is the most important item in the game this arguably the worse place in the entire game to die.

This misrepresents the challenge of the game. The game often gives you nice checkpoint spots and you never have to go through longer than 10 to 15 minute section of the game before accessing one. So by dying where he did, it makes uniformed viewers think that they have to stay alive for seemingly forever. The game is not that frustrating.

I heard about this QL on the 12/1 podcast and couldn't wait to check it out.

This is the BEST QL EVER! The commentary is equaled only by the grunts and groans from Jeff in the background.  I hope this is one of those games that becomes a valuable classic down the road, because I'm never opening it.

Well, after watching the QL, I have a strange desire to punish myself and laugh at the same time.  Maybe I'll actually go to GameStop and see if those jerks have a used copy on the cheap.  Otherwise I'm never going to play it.

Thanks for this GB Crew! Best QL ever!

I <3 this game and its not that hard, of course challenging but not ''hard'' imo.

In the first world (1-1) u get a nice amount of health items + after that u can easily over level yourself.

The boss desing is freaking awesome and there is a nice variety of them!

I got the game a couple days ago and feel the same way.  The combat and sense of reward are great when you take down even the weakest of the enemies.  But god damn it is hard.  So hard that I die 10 or so times in the same place, get pissed off, swear at the TV, and then just quit.

I'm only in 1-2 :(

Hard or not this game is fantastic. Kind of reminds me of the experience  I had with Devil May Cry 3, it'll make you want to destroy your  controller but it gives you  feeling of accomplishment few games can match. Later on when you know what your doing and have the gear and stats to back it up you feel like such a badass.

Man, that was hard to watch. I'm no masochist but I love that game. It just sucks that a bunch of people's opinions of the game are gonna be based around somebody's inability to actually play the game.

@defuniak:   That was an entertaining first look as usual and does describe the first few hours of the game where, as a few people have pointed out, seems to throw insurmountable obstacles at you. Once you understand a few things about the fundamentals of this game though, it becomes an entirely different experience.

Most of the things that sound like the most inconvenient designs are actually fixed as you progress through the game. No mana recovery? Find/buy/trade for a Fragrant Ring that replenishes your mana over time. Need to escape with your souls intact? Learn Evacuate. The soul loss on death sound frustrating? Considering you can earn 3000+ souls in 10 minutes in early game once you learn the lay of the land, it's not an issue. And the thing that makes the game so engrossing and satisfying is that you learn all these things through discovery (and occasionally seeking help online).

I'm not a hardcore gamer by any means, and analysing billions of stats gives me a headache, but this game, while seemingly inpenetrable on the surface, gives way very quickly to an extremely enjoyable dungeon exploration experience that couples some of the best parts of the Elderscrolls games, with the addictiveness of Diablo.

This is 100% accurate in my opinion. Bottom line take what you saw in the video and not what you heard, this game is very well made, Ive only ran into shitty frame rates occasionally.

Anyone that is remotely interested in this should definitely check it out. I got my copy in the mail before I went to pick up Uncharted 2, which I've been looking forward to VERY much, and I haven't put it down since. I've actually lost some interest in picking up Uncharted 2 because I know I won't be able to devote nearly enough time to fully enjoy both. Don't get me wrong though, there's no way i'm missing out on Uncharted 2. But for some crazy reason, it'll have to wait.

I don't understand this at all. What if people don't like playing hard games? Guess what? I hate to lose continuously. I'm not saying this is a bad game, but you can't just write people off for not liking this game. I only own a three sixty and I'm not stuck playing ODST or any other Halo game. (I'm actually not a huge fan of Halo games, I play them sparingly.) While I think this game looks very interesting and worth looking into the realm of PS3 again (I've dived into that before and came out uninterested in most of the games) I feel like comments like that completely give fuel to the fire. I don't suck at video games but if a game is ridiculously hard (which I'm not saying this is, I haven't played so I won't pre-judge) I am completely sure there will be a few people who are only used to the modern skill level of video games that will be extremely off put by it.
There is more to the three sixty than Halo, and there is a lot more than this to the PS3. Neither system is bad, I am extremely interested in both. I wish people would adopt this view and just accept the pros and cons and then every time a huge game that deserves the hype and praise and not the mud of people using it to belittle others and other consoles.

The game is hard but if you start with the Royal class it becomes much easier. You start with a Mana reg item. So you can range attack almost all the enemies. You can mix it up melee style when YOU WANT, but you are not normally forced into melee combat. Also, god I hate to say this, but Vinny for 5 hours in is not good at this game. You can easily switch what target you are locked onto. He never switches between targets he locks on, locks off, locks on. Just switch targets. You have to do that when facing multiple enemies. I don't fault him though. If you don't start with the Royal class the game is brutal, but with that class the game is much easier and enjoyable. After you get used to the game then go back and select another class.

I can't believe he got lost in the Nexus. That area is really simple and honestly not that big.

Regardless, this isn't a knock on Vinny. If you do a little research and understand the basics of the game then it becomes very enjoyable. I read up about the game extensively before I started playing and so the learning curve wasn't near as steep as what Vinny is going through. To be fair he has 1400 games to play; I don't. So I understand.

This first look was a joke, people blasting the game for the wrong reasons?  Just get people who like rpg and hard games... these guys were a joke! This game is personally my personal best game of 2009 and its not that hard, I ve already finished it and started my game+ game! If you s.u.c.k at games stay away from it, this is no cookie cutter game... but if you love deep rpg's this is the game you have been waiting your whole life!

Man, I so want to play this, moreso than Uncharted 2.

People just don't make hard games anymore, for example I was kind of looking forward to Borderlands, but after seeing the QL of it, it looked really easy. Like it was holding your hand the whole way.

Well, this quick look was the final push I needed to order the deluxe edition (that guidebook will come in handy I feel).

Not a huge fan of overly hardcore games, but something about this just draws me in. Not sure what it is though.

I blew through MUA 2 in a matter of hours, and I was underwhelmed...  Now here's a game with some meat.  Anyone bitching didn't grow up in the 8-bit or less era, or they're just soft.  Picked both this and UTDF2 up today.  Naughty Dog!  From Software! Atlus!  Today is a good day to own a PS3.

I agree. I was afraid of the game after watching this, with my pre-order still coming in the mail. Now that I have the game, and have played it, it's becoming one of my favourites, and very hard to put down. Honestly, I think that the loss of souls is a brilliant move to penalize a player, without making it completely frustrating. Souls are everywhere, so if you lose some, you'll get more back. You don't lose equipment that you may never get back, you lose something that you'll gain back by playing through the game some more. It makes you patient, and makes you explore different options. I'm loving it, and am already thinking of how I will play the game on my second play-through. :)

Looks at least neat enough to try out.  Maybe I consider myself a gaming masochist, having beaten both Ninja Gaiden remakes, Devil May Cry 4 on DMD, and a few other action games on harder settings.  The thing I've noticed about most "hardest" settings in games is that they arent designed to feel like your playing the same game anymore so much as you've played it enough to want to find a way to break and bend enough rules (bugs, glitches) to win.  Hopefully there's enough skill based things in this game than it lets on, to feel satisfying to some extent.  Regardless I'm always interested in changes to the RPG format since nowadays it's starting to feel a tad stale.  Of course with such class-based RPGs my biggest concern is always the class balance itself.  If I did try the game I'd purposely choose a lesser looking class to see if the game even warrants said balance.  Although everyone's opinions are all across the board, I myself would just paraphrase by saying, I hate myself at times, I like something different, I'm interested in this game.

No PSN demo for me to try it and based on this quicklook and other peoples opinions I will not be buying the game to ever find out.

Maybe a rental in the far distant future. But in a month with uncharted / brutal legend / odst etc. This game fails to sell itself to me.

Dude, why didn't you just say this in the first place. I was being a dick cause you were posting unbased irrational opinions. Yeah, no demo is a great reason not to want a game. Having other stuff you want to play more is also a great reason to not want a game.

Why not just post something constructive like this in the first place? Calling game crap, before you even play it smacks of personal justification. Saying what you've seen so far hasn't sold you on the idea of wanting to play a game makes perfect sense.

I don't like it and thats partly from what I've seen in this quicklook. I've got the console and I've watched the QL so I'm within my right to pass my opinion in this thread.

I like how everyone who thinks this game is crap hasn't actually played it. I have to assume at this point these are poor people who can't afford the games that they want. They need to then publicly state the games  are crap to convince themselves they are better off not having the games.   These are probably the same people who can't afford both a PS3 and a 360, and therefore have to think one of them is crap. (And likely make sure everyone on the internet knows they made the *right* choice)  If you've played the game and think it's crap, I'm actually curious as to your opinion. If you have coments on the quik look itself I am likewise interested in wha tyou have to say. If you here to justify your inability to purchase the game, just don't bother.   Oh and before you start bitching that you can get the game, you just think it looks lame and you don't care about it: If that were truly the case you would likely not care enough to even bother posting, you would have already moved on to something you are actually interested in. "
dude, don't be so full of yourself, some people don't like it, some people do, chill. "

Yeah....sorry bout that. Sometimes I just get a little annoyed at the whole "I have no clue what I'm talking about but here's my opinion anyway thing".

Of course some people will like the game and others wont. I didn't Play ODST, cause I'm a bit tired of Halo in general, but I don't go posting about it cause despite my felling on Halo, I haven't actually played ODST. I have made the assumption that ODST is exactly like Halo 3, (based of reviews and podcasts) but I'm not gonna weigh in since I don't really have any first hand basis for this opinion.

Thing is once you play the game you realize none of this is true. The combat is actually very well polished in the game.

(And likely make sure everyone on the internet knows they made the *right* choice)

If you've played the game and think it's crap, I'm actually curious as to your opinion.

This game is AWESOME

Wiseman said it best,
Sadly early on it does feel like the only people who could ever enjoy it are masochists that hate themselves, but once you learn how to play the game feels completely different.

There is definently a STEEP learning curve, and the game doesn't give you anything.....ANYTHING.  It takes the lone hero dropped into an army of evil idea extremely seriously.  But like he said, once you learn how to approach the game (patience, caution and attention at all times) it is amazing.

I did the exact same thing Vinny talked about : Had around 5000 souls and died (fell off some stairs) then on my corpse run I died again (stairs). The big kicker was that I fell right before opening the gate that allows quick access to the first boss.

Looks intense. From the comments, I thought this would be a "meh" game, but it looks pretty dang interesting, and I usually have a strong dislike for "overly-hard" games. From what the video showed it doesn't seem that hard, you'd just need to have patience and think things through.
If I had a PS3 and some random cash, I'd probably get this. The whole patience + timing thing seems like something I would like.
