How on earth did Brad get to 170 without noticing those horn skulls were different and that you have to hit 2 gems on each side of the large spawners...

Other than that Brad's experience is exactly the experience I've had. I need to kill the spider as quickly as possible or my run is over. Once you get past the spider the real game begins.

@brad: I think that's just something that you get the feeling for as you do it more. As you hit him , the face lights up. It's not easy, but i guess that's what the game is about :)

I do think that when you nail getting that spider with the bulletstream, you will be more consistantly getting higher scores than hoping for the perfect shotgun blasts. It just doesn't deal enough burst damage to kill him off in time.

The spider is hard to hit because you keep shooting at it with the shotgun from across the level, Bradley.

So if it is 13 enemies total, the highest runs are only showing:

One Gem Spire
Two Gem Spire
Small Skull
Big Ram Horn Skull
Big Ram Horn Skull 2
Big Spider
Little Green Spider
Centipede
Blood Chandelier

That would mean that there are 4 enemies we haven't seen yet. Did I miss any?

@vhdblood: There's also Centipede 2 (aka the Chain Link Fence Centipede). There's Horned Skull 3 that spawns with the Blood Chandelier. The Spider Eggs might also be an enemy? I dunno. I also hear there's a third Spawner that's smaller than the normal one that occasionally pops up but I can't identify it.

Nope, don't get the complaining about the price at all. I mean, I get it because that's always a thing that happens and people put a different value on blah blah "content" yadda yadda all that nonsense.

You know what also cost 5 dollars and was no modes except high score survival and is considered fucking rad, one of the defining games of the previous generation, and probably even by many one of the best pure video-game-ass video games ever? Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved. And that motherfucker only has, like, 10 enemies (and that's only if you count the little pinks that split out when you kill a big pink square)!

Not enough "content" my ass, at 13 enemies this game has 30% more content than Geometry Wars (a game that to be sure was, and is, fucking rad) for the same price! No, LESS price if you adjust for inflation! This is a hell of a bargain, especially as Devil Daggers also happens to be, like Geometry Wars, fucking rad.

As a person who never played all those WASD PC games early on, I can't handle that for movementthat needs this much flow. Had to find my Xpadder stuff and map it to a controller while keeping the mouse for aiming (I'm not completely insane).

Got to 57 seconds in my first session with that setup and once I hit 70 or so I'll retire. Without a narrative, I can only play for so long before my brain desperately wants to do something else.

This game is rad. Sort of my "I've got 15 minutes to kill, lets play some of this and try to beat my high score".

Of course that 15 usually turns to 30, but it's fun. Gotten up to 115 seconds now and can usually do ~70 consistently. I do agree with Brad though that how you handle the first spider means everything on the run.

Paused the video at 13 minutes, bought the game and played it a few times - 121 seconds. @danryckert is such a scrub.

Honestly though, I think it's his lack of Quake experience that is coming to bite him in the ass with this game.

ps- well turns out limited dynamic range was pretty much cheating at this game, with full range the darks are actually dark and it's much harder to see spiders from a distance and the distant spires.. makes a huge difference :)

@rujasu: Yup. He also keeps acting like the spider is super hard to kill but if you keep the timer on you know when it's gonna spawn and it's easy to find as soon appears if you look directly across from the big spire. The spider goes down right as the big skull is behind you every time if you do it right.

Using the shotgun so much could be hindering you from learning how to lead the stream of daggers accuartely. You can kill the spiders from across the map if you aim it correctly. I almost never use shotgun and I make it to the upgrade and +100 seconds maybe 4 out of 5 attempts.

This game seems fun and for 5 dollars, I might try it. But what makes Geometry Wars and those type of games great for me is not just the twitchy gameplay, but also the catchy soundtracks. This game has no music score.

I think I remember on the bombcast that the crew thought that PS1/N64 retro looking games made today wouldn't wok out as well as 8 bit or 16 retro style games mainly due to the look of those games not holding up as well. I know that Brad has also said that the PS1/N64 generation has aged the worst out of the different generations when it comes to the games' graphics and gameplay.

I don't know how the gaming public is reacting to Devil Daggers, but with Giant Bomb West loving this game that looks like a fresh PS1 title, they could be proven wrong.
