Quick Look: Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2

I liked the first one, maybe I'll play this one.

I loved the original Pokemon back in the day. But god damn these games are interminably slow now. Not sure if I just had more tolerance for putting 100+ hours into a game, half of which is me watching the same boring things happen, or if having less time to play games means I can't justify incredibly repetitive and tedious gameplay.

I'll give it to Final Fantasy XIII - even if the story and mechanics in that game were paced terribly, at least the battles were snappy and exciting. Granted, that couldn't keep me interested for the long haul, but it kept me going far longer than these games would be able to these days.

heh, watching this was kind of depressing because I love this series and Ryan is crapping all the hell over it, mostly without really knowing what it is. I can see why somebody who is expecting a quick hook would struggle with this series though. this is for real DQ fans and the GB guys don't seem like the type.

Yeah, there's a giant worm creature that comes through here on a regular basis. It'll straight up murder you. Kinda forgot about that.

I was super into DWM2 and heard this was coming out a few days ago, which got the me all nostalgic and interested in breeding up tons of dudes again, but didn't want to pull the trigger in case it was way different. Instead it looks almost exactly the same, down to the awful battle music that's still burned into my head after a decade. I opened Amazon and ordered it as soon as I saw the family tree. This QL isn't indicative of what makes the series good, but it told me enough that I'm willing to give it a shot.

Wow. The fans of this game must have a very screwed up psyche. Between this and the Kirby game that both had QL's today, you're really going to tell me this is the game you are most interested in buying????

I just want the monster games for the GBC on my 3DS!

@Splodge: I'm not disappointed by the fact that they didn't enjoy the game but by the lack of informed comments. Considering their status as professionals and their extensive experience you can't really help but think that they could have talked about other aspects of the game they were playing. They spent most of the time complaining about how slow the game really was when that's something already expected about such titles. Whinging about it doesn't add much. Also I've come to expect a lot more from them. It's surely not a review but could've been better regardless.

But that's how I see it...

Gee, Ryan. Maybe if you talk about how much you don't like slow JRPGs over and over, that will make this quick look more entertaining. Also, don't bother reading those game mechanic notes ahead of time; wait for Patrick to logically point out those things mid-quick-look.

didn't really like the first joker but after hearing that this game has the original dragon warrior monsters battle music, i am totally down with getting this shit.

Who have though Goku was in dragon quest too?

@FreedomTown: I prefer fully blind quick looks, myself. One of the videos which got me into this site was the Noby Noby Boy quick look.

This game looks good for an endurance run.

The new Pokemon games are actually much slower than the old ones. In Red and Blue, if you pressed Start, the menu instantly came up. Saving took like one second. If you walked through a door, the new area was loaded in a split second.

In Black and White, the menu takes like a second to load. Saving can take 10 seconds. When you walk through a door, you have to wait one or two seconds for the new area to load. It may not sound like much, but these are things you do frequently and it really adds up.

Even the early games had speed issues caused by things like frequent, annoying random battles, but the new ones are much worse.

Yeh it's true, Pokemon games also have a fucking terrible pacing. Battle intro amo,atopm, trainer intro animation and/or pokemon intro animation, all the battle animations, text speed, end of battle animation, load time 'til your back on the world view. All INSANELY slow. I think in Black'n'White encountering a trainer means you have to wait about [b]15[/b] seconds before you can start issuing orders. FIFTEEN. Normal Pokemon encounters are still about 8 I think.

And the way those games are designed, you are supposed to battle a hell lot of trainers and Pokemon throughout your playthrough (and after). It's blowing my mind how they don't actually improve the pacing but keep making it worse and worse. Everyone who plays Pokemon for a longer time ends up disabling the battle animation because they just take so long.

It goes like this:

Issue attack - slow text - slow battle animation - extra hit animation (you know, when your Pokemon blinks shortly) - slow health bar draining - slow text - end of your pokemons attack.

They could at least have some of those happen on the same time and also at a higher speed. Like:

Issue attack - text + battle animation - quick hit animation + at least moderate health bar draining + text. There, two instances.

Oh and let's not even take into consideration what happens when your Pokemon is confused or paralyzed... yeh... a nightmare.

For me personally the overall pacing is one of the most important aspects.

By the way a game series that does this really, really well is Golden Sun. Battles start quickly, issues commands goes right away and quickly. Animations are already rather quick but can be seed up by pressing b (especially useful when using those summonings), battle ending goes super quickly too.

THAT is how you do it. (Sadly Golden Sun: Dark Dawn was a complete disappointment for other reasons though :((( )

Well spotted! I thought that too and decided to scan through the thread to see if anyone else has already mentioned it.

This embodies pretty much everything I dislike about JRPGs. I guess I had more patience as a tween because I loved these kinds of games when I was younger.

I love non-random encounters! I can't speak for anything else in the game :)

I don't remember why I bought the first DQM Joker. Maybe because it seemed like 3D Pokemon? I remember liking it a bit, but then the difficulty spiked like a motherfucker and it became an incredible grind, so I gave up on it. This looks exactly the same.

I forgot how demented some of the monster designs were in Dragon Quest.

It is amazing we get multiple hour+ long quick looks at extremely underwhelming games like TrackMania, yet a massively popular, well-received game like this gets a brush over treatment with people who admittedly don't want to be playing it and don't know the system.

Come on guys, if you don't want to do the quick look, give the assignment to someone who does. Is the beginning a little non-eventful? Sure, but there are so many details to the game which weren't mentioned I might as well have gone to Joystiq if I wanted to be presented something half-assed.

I find this happens now and then when the people tasked with an assignment doesn't have a high opinion of said game. Of course you are welcome to your opinion, and it might be justified in most cases, but at least spend the time to research what it is you are making a quick look out of, and present the information to the viewer, along with your disdain. At least then it would be a somewhat informative, albeit negative, quick look.

Just makes me want to play pokemans.

I don't get how this trash gets localized over here but Japan decides that Xenoblade Chronicles isn't worth it. If I ever hold a copy of this game in my hand I will destroy it.

Suprisingly it's getting some pretty decent reviews from other game sites. Not my cup of tea though, just started Pokemon Black and am loving the hell out of it!

Did Sugiyama do the music? It is good.

Like they always say, once they start actually researching stuff it'll ruin everything. Sure that's on the Bombcast but...seriously it's hilarious when they have no idea what the games they're playing are all about. In fact, that's sort of realistic because if I just picked this game up I wouldn't do tons of research to figure out what it was beforehand. I'd expect the game to stand on its own more or less.

QL's have always been about first impressions, though, not doing extensive research.

I would like to play this, though I'm also kind of boring and don't mind too much that you have to press a button at the end of a battle.

Oh my god. Bad memories of Simon's Quest hitting me hard once again after seeing that sentence about the night arriving.

"RIchard attacks" makes me giggle like an idiot for a solid minute every time. I am damaged.
