Also, is this a Giantbomb first? The first time an entire game was ever shown in a Quick Look?

Nah, they did it for Bad Dudes in the past as well.

And so ends the Dragon's Lair Endurance Run.

Also, is it just me or are the HD versions of the videos pretty low res recently?

YES! Dirk the Daring to the rescue!

Love me some stupid Dragon's Lair - especially the animation parts that seem kinda suggestive.

You know, when playing Dragon's Lair as a kid on the CD-i, I totally had the impossible electro-knight section down. I could do all of them, except the final section with Daphne and the dragon. It took ages to do the electo-knight section though.

I love Dragon's Lair and Space Ace. I am, however, disappointed that they basically show you the correct motions for each scene. The main challenge of the arcade was that you were guessing which of the exits to use. Heck, there were unique death animations for the Drink Me potion or trying to jump across the chasm in that room, yet it seems they're disabled in this.

they probably didn't pick that option, you can drink the potion but you have to make that choice. otherwise if you are off its the death by fire.

@Eujin: You can turn the move indicators off.

In fact, all of the recent Digital Leisure Dragon's Lair releases on all platforms have an option to play the game like you would on a real arcade machine, ie flying blind with nothing but memorization/guess-work.

On the PC they released a version that had all the games on it: space ace, Dragon's Lair 1 and Dragon's Lair 2. It does not work on modern computers and Digital Leisure has never cared because they keep releasing Dragon's Lair on everything.

I also agree with Vinny, Dragon's Lair 2 is way cooler. It's also insane. If you've never seen it, there is video of it on youtube. Well, I suppose there's video for all of them on youtube really.

And I agree, Daphne is hot. I can forgive her apparent loose nature, too.

It's the new crappy video player. It doesn't scale smoothly anymore, making even 720p videos look blocky on higher resolutions.

I bought this for the nostalgia. I love the animation and have many fond memories of this game. I actually finished it - once - at a local bowling alley circa 1984. On this version the kinect recognition is pretty bad, and the sound leaves something to be desired, but other than that it's great fun to play through with a controller (with the move hints OFF). I guess I'm one of the few who made the purchase - less than 3,000 people on the leaderboards right now.

I still have a fondness for Dragons Lair somehow.  Even when I'm actively agreeing with Ryan that it's not a good game, I'm still enjoying watching the rooms play out without errors.  Particularly the hard rooms that I always used to screw up on when I played this on 3DO when I was little.

@FrankieViturello said:

Just a quick point or two to clarify the difference between "Arcade" and "Home".

The Arcade version of Dragon's Lair had a set number of branched versions of the castle, with the falling platform stage allowing you to alter the order slightly mid-progression, and character death causing the current scene to shuffle to the end of the queue of scenes that you need to complete.

To reach the Dragon's Lair on a standard Dragon's Lair cabinet you need to complete every level once (including every mirror instance of a level that has one) and hit the qualifying point level 250,000+ (which you can't really do without completing all the levels, but once you pass 250,000 you know you're pretty much in queue to do any levels that you previously died on).

Essential to the "arcade" vesion is that when you die, you don't immediately get to re-play the level you died on, which makes it harder to memorize the required moves.

Also, the "arcade" version does not have the opening sequence with the draw bridge and moat/tentacle monster. It's actually on the laserdisc in the arcade, but a machine with standard settings will not play that board at the beginning of a play-through.

The "home" version of Dragon's Lair has the drawbridge level, plays the levels in a distinct order and it allows/forces you to immediately replay the level that you died on.

As a lifelong Dragon's Lair aficionado I give Digital Leisure a lot of credit for these last rounds of home and portable releases (everything since the Blu-Ray remastering). They're 99% arcade authentic with only a few very very minor differences. However, the ultimate credit needs to be given to the guys at the "DAPHNE PROJECT" who created the PC/Mac laserdisc arcade emulator that really paved the way for AUTHENTIC home versions of games like Dragon's Lair.

Excellent info. Thank you for posting! I hope you're adding to the giantbomb's dragon's lair wiki page!

I remember this in the arcades. I almost never saw anyone play it, but the trailer volume was always jacked super high. God forbid you wanted to play a game within 20 feet of this cabinet; you'd have Dragon's Lair blasting in your ears the whole time.

This version allows you to watch the whole game being played, start to finish (without the hints on, just the animation while the game plays itself). It's a nice touch.
