Quick Look: Endless Space

I kept waiting for the flying-in-space part, but it never came. 
 
edit: Oh, there it is!

There's a lot of uncertainty being presented here. These guys wouldn't survive a lightyear in space. And you know that when you're in space....a lightyear is nothing.

HoI III would destroy them. You saw the CK II one and HoI III is orders of magnitude harder to play.

Quick Look...holy shit it's over an hour. Quickest hour ever. Also, the game is called Endless Space, immediately followed by a screen in which you choose a map size.

I was master of HoI II and I couldn't get into HoI III for some reason...

I blame the Chain of Command system. It's incredibly deep and seems realistic and if I sat down long enough to "Get it" it might win me over, but it's just so huge and unwieldy and requires a huge time investment just to START organisation your troops, it scares me off.

This looks neat ... I bought a lot of stuff at the steam sale, but once im done with that I could see myself getting this.

Very interesting. The interface looks exceptionally tidy and slick which is somewhat rare for small scale developed games like this, the style looks good and the implicit lore seems pretty interesting if not nearly as evolved as Sins of a Solar Empire. The mechanic of planetary systems as strategic nodes with individual planets as quasi-expansions seems fascinating and the 4X mechanics seem very simple and streamlined from what was on display here. I'm not quite sure what to make of the battle system. The cinematic eyecandy dimension of it is very nice but I can see it getting extremely boring very quickly if those tactical maneuver cards aren't tied to factions and tech advancements in a significant fashion. That doesn't have to be a problem though if the automatic resolution of fights works decently.

Either way, I'm all but certain I'll buy it and give it a shot sometime soon. Then again I'm still not done with Civ5, haven't even gotten into its expansion yet and am just getting really hooked on Warlock - Master of the Arcane. Good fucking times!

That observation may well be the best I've read all day. On a related note, would be pretty fascinating if someone made a 4X game with redshifting as the reason for maximum observable distance, and while you can see enemy turns, the farther away they are, the lag between what you see and what they are actually doing increases.

I've been playing the Pilgrims too and I have found to start with the exploration tech tree and slowly branch into Military/Science when needed and then do the odd diplomacy talent.

Also, I've been generally playing on normal difficulty and found trying to eradicate the first civ you meet as soon as you can has generally worked out for me. Generally, I would have had more ships than the other civ and we never have met anyone else so there are never really any diplomatic problems. Can't complain when you are dead.

I was actually a little disappointed with this game. It's not the behemoth that Gal Civ II is, which is to say I think that game has spoiled me when comes to 4X games.

To it's credit though it is very easy to learn, nicely designed, has great music and writing and is unfortunately very brutal. I had to make sure all races I was playing with were friendly, and now it's just a love fest that I can tell will end in tears.

This game looks fantastic! I'll have to wait to get it though since I bought so much during the sale.

Been looking forward to this QL, was hoping for this to get in on the steam sale but definitely will get it as it looks like a lot of fun. Hope that in the future that they put in an assortment of other images to pick to use for custom races in the game.

I really hope there is a way to get 1080p videos soon (I wonder if it is too expensive when it comes to storage or...?), some games look so amazing that 720p just doesn't cut it anymore. Endless Space isn't visually stunning, but the resolution makes it pretty hard to read the text.

Not really the same thing IMO.

I'm not really familiar with them, but 4X games, like this, seem similar to Civ, at least on the surface. Am I getting it wrong?

Totally different styles of game, but yes. I love Sins. It sounds like Brad is doing Rebellion next maybe - he posted a question about it on Twitter.

Civ is a 4X game, so nope, you're on the right track. The other game this will get compared to is Sins of a Solar Empire, which is another 4X game, but it's real-time. So it's like a hybrid RTS/4X. Much more focus on military than in the more traditional 4X games, although later expansions have made other victories a little more viable.

I see your Endless Space and RAISE you by 1: Master of Orion ... the original, is even 'better'.

Oh, btw - Master of Orion: The Official Strategy Guide by Alan Emrich & Tom Hughes is only $244.64 on Amazon.

This looks and sounds completely awesome! Never played Homeworld, a real sad fact for me too, but this just gives me all the same warm feelings as Sins of Solar Empire.

EDIT: Notice that Sins and Endless Space is compared a lot here, but that's just cool in my opinion. Both have such a great feeling to them. ^^

I'm really into the look/feel/sound of this game, and I'd pick it up if I didn't just buy GalCivs II from the Steam sale. The ship customization and battle system especially look cool.

I spent 25 hours in Albion Prelude. I don't know what the hell I did for all that time. I want to get back into either that or Evochron, since I picked up a joystick.. but I can't decide which one.

Little too Macro for me... I wish it had a deeper level of zoom, micromanaging stuff on individual planets.

Thanks for the quicklook! Looks nice and flashy; though I was gifted Galactic Civ II during the steam sale. That will cover my space conquering ambitions for a little while, but I'm definitely keeping an eye on this one.

Dave's interjections were great. Almost like a, "Hey, we're the random crazy PC gamer dudes, not you".

This QL is painful to watch, Brad really sucks at this game.
