I found the comment weird from Brad when he said that all the NES games have different movement physics.

I mean, isn't that like all games ever. Arkham Asylum and Assassin's Creed also don't have the same movement physics.

I just find it a puzzling reaction.

I watched this out of interest of what it was but I have zero nostalgia for these games so this looks so unappetizing.

I find it adorable how Brad is absolutely terrible at quite possibly the simplest Nintendo game ever created, Kirby. Though with how video games have advanced these days, going back to something as simple as Kirby would probably be really confusing for a few minutes, doesn't help that this is his first experience with the game, too.

Brad seems to love super mario bros 2 but doesn't love wario's wood? Some hypocrisy or nostalgia is afoot, they're both the same mechanically.

Kirby is the one Nintendo character I have genuine nostalgia for. I only had a Game Boy, but played the shit out of Kirby's Dreamland 1 and 2 on that thing. Great mechanics (especially 2) and visual design, and the music is incredible. So much joy orchestrated from the DMG-1 sound chip.

Is it just me or is the textured background they add in some of the remix levels horrible to look at? It looks like something from an old Paint Shop Pro.

Thank god they kicked out the overly jaded Jeff Gerstmann for this.

Edit: That said, holy shit this remix 2 deserves getting actual shit. "Enter the door that lies ahead" ? Are you fucking kidding me?

At least Remix 1 did something that resembles a "hack" ie, the screen zooms out continuously or everything is silhouetted. Jeff was wrong to criticize Remix 1 but Remix 2 looks unimaginative and stupid-easy.

Edit edit: Well I guess I shoulda kept watching. Whoops. Why would this game gate the "remix" content and force you to play through tiny slices of normal games? Seems dumb!

Yeah, that's exactly how the first game was. Mostly little quick challenges. There's a decent chunk of remixes, but they still comprise only about 1/4 of the challenges overall.

I really like these games, and I totally understand why they'd market the hell out of the remix stages, but it is pretty misleading.

Okay, so, you can pick stuff up in both. What else?

I guess they are supposed to be tutorial like levels as all the games are 20-25 years old. Just sucks that these tutorial challenges make up a lot of the content.

Wow you people suck. Brad didn't play that poorly at all in this. That Kirby level was bullshit, and he said he never even played the game before that moment. I don't care what kind of nostalgia goggles you're wearing; the jumping in Metroid and Mario is not at all intuitive to how most every platformer handles their jumping nowadays, and it's easy to forget how floaty they were.

I don't know what to think, anymore. The stated mission of this website was to provide the finest Dr. Mario play, but somewhere we lost our way.

Kirby's Adventure is one of the best NES games.

That's all I have to say.

He just meant that you typically don't play games with very different movement schemes in rapid succession. Unless you happen to be a Wario Ware fanatic.

He's not wrong. He's just kind of a sourpuss.

If brad used a mix of flapping and then exhaling to parasol then back to flapping again, he would have beaten that Kirby part way sooner. good on him for not using the parasol, that's tricky.

This pretty much sums up the tone of the Quick Look. Maybe Nintendo should add "press A to win" if the challenges are too demanding. NES Remix 2 has an interesting idea in changing game play to established games. The problem is the stink of repackaged nostalgia.

I'm normally not bothered by differences of opinion between myself and the Giant Bomb staff, but I have never been more enraged by an opinion about video games than when Brad casually dismissed Kirby's Adventure. How dare you? How dare you, Bradley? Kirby is a saint.

Fuck Dark Souls. Play Kirby.™

@krabboss: The first Super Mario Bros. still plays way better than later SNES or PS1 platformers.

That would be a problem if you were trying to play later Mario games with SMB1's physics, but the levels are all built with those limitations in mind. But really, I just don't know what to tell you. I still find SMB to be very playable and very enjoyable to this day, and I just don't know how to relate to anyone who doesn't.

There's a very good chance that I'll refuse to budge on this and then escalate it to an argument, so let's just call it a disagreement and move on.

Nah, it's a problem regardless. The game feels like hot shit and was outdated in no time. You're welcome to enjoy it but there's no reason to play it over many of its superior sequels.

Sure there are reasons to play SMB1! The view that the sequels are better (subjectively or objectively) don't erase all reasons to play SMB1. One could simply play it for perspective or a refresher thereof, which was the original P.O.V. that started this mess. That it presents a different set of game play challenges from the sequels (like being unable to backtrack) one might appreciate (subjectively or objectively) is another. Check out the recent VinnyVania series which ties in nostalgia, capitalism and redemption for yet another reason in a similar vein.

I do applaud the hilarious attempts to lighten the mood with Jeff style lifted commentary like "hot shit" though. Shows we're not taking our weird anti-nostalgia and oddball video game zealotry overly serious in these here Giant Bomb parts. Unless it was serious, then I say, you're welcome to hate and maybe someday you'll have a similar dismissive experience granting perspective that causes you to rethink a bit.

Going right to left in a mario game would be like writing with your other hand.
