Really? Really, Giant Bomb?

I don't have a problem with Patrick whatsoever. But nor do I value some false sense of consensus to the point that I go into a pathetic swearing fit and beg staff members to ban anyone who complains about Patrick. You are only making yourselves look bad, and you're doing a swell job of it.

It's disgusting.

@ZHabermann: Your post is very well written and the Patrick defense force is definitely way worse on this video's comment section.

This game looks really cool but I kinda want it to be applied to a bigger thing.

This game seems cool. The more realistic gun management would make shootouts so tense. I have no idea how well that would work in a more rounded game, but I think it would be awesome to attempt. The small touches like using light to see how many bullets you have in a magazine or cylinder was neat.

The problem is controls. Half of the keybindings used by traditional fps games are already used here just to operate the gun.
Maybe something more contextual would work. Dial or radial menus and so on, but that slows down the gameplay.

I don't know if anyone has said this yet, but Overgrowth isn't actually out yet. The guy(s) making this at Wolfire games are continually updating and tweaking the game, and adding new stuff. Also the engine they are using (specifically the physics engine) is INSANELY good.

Also, Wolfire games are the guys who started the Humble Bundle stuff FYI :)

You could have a context button. For example, you have to hold down ctrl + whatever for the intended effect.

@Sarumarine: Imagine how tense it would be in multiplayer, with everyone trying desperately to remember how many bullets are still in the chamber. It really needs to be fleshed out some, cos it could be great.

@planetfunksquad: Yeah, definitely. Or like Patrick brought up, I am one of those people that constantly reload after one or two shots, so a game like this would really break me of that habit.

Also, that final part trying to spin the cylinder so the last shot was lined up with the hammer was perfect.

I'm surprised they didn't mention when you reload a clip with bullets left in it, those bullets are just left in the clip. They don't magically transfer into your new clip like games imply. That's another reason not to reload after shooting once.

Yeah, they left out a lot of stuff that I wish got mentioned. But I guess that's for the people who are interested enough to buy the game to find out.

Tried this soon after it was finished. It's definitely interesting and I do feel like there's a happy medium between this and "press R to reload". I remember the FireArms HL1 mod having partially filled magazines, with the option to merge all of those together when you're in safety for a while. Stuff like that could improve tension without being all that tedious.

This is a really cool game that shows firearms are complex machines that are tedious and difficult to master, not the magical bullet hoses that most games portray. The NRA should have funded it!

Patrick and Drew made a surprisingly great QL team here. Credit where credit is due.

is it really a habit that needs to be broken? as long as you dont try to reload constantly in a real life situation, who cares if you do this in videogames that dont punish you for it? For all you know the next innovation in guns could be to be able to reload with out losing the whole clip. Also it was a nice touch letting the user spin the cylinder.

@super2j: I just think it would be a nice restraint to have, that's all. Especially considering there are games out there that do punish you for reloading after one or two shots. Condemned is one of them I think, where you'll toss whole magazines away whether they're empty or not.

Also, constant reloading does get me killed when I could be shooting in some games. That kind of stuff.

I really would like to see this kind of detailed, more realistic approach to gun mechanics in other games, especially in the survival horror genre. The usual 'automated' style is less satisfying and immersive in this regard.

@Chavtheworld: There are three guns in the game at the moment, it originally released with just the 1911 which you see at the beginning of the quick look. It picks a gun at random every time you restart, he just happened to keep getting the revolver the rest of the time.

I would bet that this game is a whole lot more "educational" than the NRA's game.

there is one point where drew says "check your corners Patrick" and ll i could think about was how good this games mechanics would be in a SWAT type game.

Also i love how the gun has that early 3D games look about it like virtua racing

Another crazy game. Nice ideas and I'd like to see some more complicated gun mechanics in games.

I have absolutely no interest in firing a real gun. It's precisely why I play video games: Virtual guns don't actually kill people, despite what the NRA claim.

Nah, in Condemned 1 you just throw the whole damn gun away and take another one. That´s how freaking hardcore Ethan Thomas is- well, the investigator Ethan Thomas, not the weird ass bearded freak with a different voice in part two.

Yes, woot woot and so forth. That being said, I do wish there didn't have to be a single person being disproportionately represented. That would probably require the other guys to become more interested in more obscure, indie games though.
