Quick Look: Solo: Outlast

Patrick, scare cam is great for games like this. Don't stop doing it. Also, fuck this game.. creepy stuff.

Two things.

Unarmed reporter dude sees mutilated corpses everywhere, talked to a SWAT guy spitted like a pig. SEES some kinda monster sitting in a wheelchair. Like a horror movie, I seriously loved that Patrick noticed the exit sign, but didn't get to it...whereas given what this reporter has already experienced, getting the eff out of there is about the only logical thing to do. I was mentally yelling, "get the fuck out of there, what are you doing?!!" Maybe when we get to the Matrix...

Also, THIS is how I expected a first person 1950's era XCOM to go. Running scared shitless in the hopes of collecting enough tidbits of info to be useful for whoever finds your body. If near future special ops die ignominiously offscreen (the XCOM tutorial where you try to save the German recon team), and even your GI JOEs can barely hold their own against Sectoids at first, I don't have much hope for sharply dressed 60's spooks.

Game seems way to scripted and static. Very little interaction with the environment. At least Amnesia and Penumbra felt like adventure games while also being scary, this one just looks like a carnival spook house.

That certainly isn't something new at all though. New to you perhaps? But that cliche has been around for probably as long as fiction has been.

I didn't get it at first. And then it hit me.

I was watching this video on my 46 inch tv and actually screamed when Patrick was convinced the music didn't mean anything and opened the door to find the monster dude there.

It looks like a way less clunky Amnesia but it's a shame the enemies appear to be a non issue at times. I'm not a fan of insta-death but it does have it's uses in creating tension.

You're not the only one who appreciates a good retro-futuristic aesthetic.

You lasted 40 minutes longer than I would have done. Bravo, Patrick.

Amnesia isn't clunky, it's eccentric but the way the controls work never actually interfere with gameplay. Doors can be slightly annoying to open when being chased but I think that is quite intentional.

I'm a huge believer in the theory that nothing should ever be intentionally clunky.

Should they also stop filming their reactions when they do Thursday Night Throwdown, Unprofessional Fridays, Live E3 Podcasts, and any live video press conferences?

edit: Shit man, PewDiePie already has TWO Outlast videos, and both of them are close to a million views a piece, that's way too popular for Giant Bomb.

I would be too scared to play this game by myself, but I enjoy watching others do so. The graphics are pretty good and I love the sound effects (especially the creaking floors!)

Game looks pretty intense! Also, definitely keep the camera, it wouldn't be the same without it!

Here's my take, if the camera is there, we might have another spooky sighting of Scoops' mom, Katie, the dog.....or SOMETHING ELSE. WooooooOOOOooOOOOOOoOoOOoO

Also, I don't get why people are so up in arms about the corner cam just because it's being popularized by somebody else. I don't really mind the second cam anyways since it's similar to what he already does with Spookin' the only difference is that it isn't live. It would have been cool though if this was a live QL done at night just for this game.

@humanity: Well, that's true. I don't think there are cases that the controls are intentionally clunky but controls is at times subjective to the person since what one might consider to be clunky another wouldn't even notice or consider that it's clunky, etc.

I'm bored by horror games. But I watch these to watch Patrick act like a little girl.

HUGE props to Patrick for playing this game in a completely dark room and alone. You watch youtubers like pewdiepie playing in full sunlight and still getting the shit scared out of them. Balls of steel man, balls of steel.

Pay no heed to the haters, I like seeing you react to the horror. It's fun watching you squirm (sorry), and it makes it easier for a wimp like me to watch these. Keep it up Patrick.

Hmm...maybe my memory is off but I don't remember too many jump scares in Amnesia which is part of the reason I liked it so much. Sure there are moments that make you scream but I think that's different than "open the door WHAM MONSTER BLAH."

Also I find the setting a bit rote/tired in horror but that is not this game's fault really. I think Outlast is committing to a lot of details I really appreciate and wish more games would do, like hands on edges when leaning and showing your body in the game. If nothing else it's got a great attention to detail.

Curious to see what the reaction will be overall. Also is anyone kinda weirded out by calling this game AAA's response to Amnesia? I don't know, that statement makes it seem reactionary and cash-grabby when I'm sure it's the exact opposite. Either way I think the real story is that Outlast is starting make this genre of horror into a trend and I'm really excited by that.

I doubt I'll actually play this because I have a hard time with these kinds of horror games, but it looks pretty good.
