I love the Toy Soldiers series, but I'm not picking this one up.

The PC version is locked at 30fps, and requires Uplay. Uplay alone wouldn't be so bad, but the double-whammy-fps-lock gives me the stink-face.

That said, I'll definitely pick it up if they remove the fps-cap.

Does anyone know if the disc version comes with a code in the box for the licensed armies, or what? I rented the game from Gamefly, and on the hero select screen it acts like I don't have them and wants me to buy them. I thought I had read somewhere that it was just supposed to be all on the disc.

@jadegl:

For all that could be said about GI Joe's "Oo-rah let's use the military to solve ALL our problems",

it DID have a great range of role-models that you didn't typically see in pop-culture: strong female characters on both sides, and a multi-cultural cast of characters from all across the globe. (As a gangly, awkward teen, I personally liked Jinx.) :)

It also had Sgt. Slaughter. So, even though I never really cared about GI Joe, it seems alright.

Still with the complaining about free to play elements that they don't need to engage with (as brad clearly demonstrates by explaining he already had most of the upgrades just from playing the game).

The nostalgia factor is cool, but that's about it for me.

As off putting as Assassin's Creed in this game is, I am actually interested in that set the most. To see what they add to it. Too bad they didn't even bother.

Also Warhammer 40K would be interesting, but it'll probably never happen.

Was GI Joe the same as the Action Force we had in Europe? The logo treatments were the same and figures look familiar, but I don't remember them having any vehicles.

Either way, Dino Riders was my jam, even though I only ever had the triceratops.

I don't have a ton of nostalgia for this stuff despite being the appropriate age because my family couldn't afford too many toys. I had He-Man and Beastman but no vehicles and like 3 GI-Joes.

Shoutouts to other people who didn't grow up middle class.

Thanks for the reply, dude.

Hmm...Guess I got to play a bit and decide if I want to buy it or not so I can use He-Man. Or maybe just buy He-Man for 5 bucks, play what I want, then send it back to Gamefly.

But the articulation on the He-Man toys is all fucked up. That really bothers me for some reason.

Yeah - fucked up in that these ones HAVE articulation. Wrong, but I'm okay with it. Fun story, as a kid my mom wouldn't let me have any bad guys. So my brothers and I had a bunch of good guy He-Man figures and they had nobody to fight. We had to take them to our friends' houses to actually face Skeletor and his his goons.

Seems odd that they would leave this game to die/not promote it. I know they have another game in the Toy Soldiers franchise to work on, but these toy licenses can't have been cheap.

Press square! PRESS IT! And no, the anti-armor is not good against infantry. No wonder you have so many bronze! @brad

The bulk of the attention was on this game apparently. As they all but stopped updating Toy Soldiers: Complete months ago to "focus" on other stuff. Also I don't know if they're still working on that free to play game Ascend: Hand of Kul as that was a mess on the PC, dropped from the 360 at some point and has never left beta on either platform.

I like Signal Studios but they have a weird track record.

this is insightful commentary that id actually like to hear a response from them about

I've never played any of these games. Is Toy Soldiers: Complete worth checking out seeing as this doesn't look especially great?

Yes, extremely yes. It's still in early access (and it's up in the air it it'll stay that way). I have personally never had any problems playing it but if you check the steam forums there are people that do have problems playing it. The game looks content complete and they have said that multiple times. There just seems to be a few bugs to work out for them to go from early access to released.

@professionlol: I would as well. They seem to be a small company. I see the number 40 thrown around a lot. Not all "40" seem to be working on one project at a time and so that seems to make everything go slower as they spread themselves out too thin as they 'prioritize' what they think is more important.

The 80s had the best toys! Though I'm shocked and disappointed that a Skeletor faction wasn't in the game, I'm tempted to buy it because I've never played a Toy Soldiers game before and I grew up in the 80s. Is this game a good place to start?

That's not a genuine G.I. Joe figure. His dick isn't broken!
Btw who else spent a lot of time taking those apart and recombining them? Best gosh darn action figures ever made. The kids today will never know!

I can't believe that after all the backlash Ubisoft went through for releasing bad PC ports locked at 30fps that they would continue to repeat the same mistake with this game. Pathetic.

Kinda surprised to hear Brad say "that free to play game they did" was pretty good and expressing surprise over why Microsoft shut it down when he himself did the quicklook of Ascend: Hand of Kul, and was pretty down on it.

Also, has anybody played the early-access-open-world-survival-game they did earlier this year, Savage Lands?

I have a B.A.T. but I never knew what it was before this Quick Look because I'm not American and wasn't alive in the '80s. Thanks, @brad! Also, I totally broke the band inside.

On topic of this game, I've heard disquiet rumblings that the game is absolutely lousy with DLC. From the Quick Look, it doesn't seem soooooooo bad -- basically, they broke up the full on-disk game ($30) into two $15 chunks for digital distribution.

THANK YOU! Someone else who gets it! All I'd seen so far were kids that have just gone "BOO DLC! BOOOOO!!!", without thinking about it and realizing that it's $30 for the full game or cheaper if you just want to buy the piece that you want.

I'm fine with that, or I would be if DLC in this game wasn't as heinous as it is.

Say I bought the extra characters and went to play the game split-screen with my brother. In order to also use those characters, he'd also have to buy the DLC because they're tied to the specific account. That's the part where is becomes kinda shitty.

It'd be like playing Mario Kart 8 and being told "Nah, you gotta buy the extra tracks 3 more times for each of your buddies to use them."

I can only assume that split-screen was a last-minute addition to the game because of how painfully broken it is.

I feel like no one is asking the most important question here: Are there alternate Cobra Commander costumes?! Can you play as Hooded, snake on my forehead Cobra Commander, or crazy mechanical Storm Trooper reminiscent Cobra Commander?

If not, they fucked up. BIG TIME.

Also, WHERE IS SNAKE EYES?!

Ah, it's the rare Brason quick look. Looking forward to watching it tonight after UPF!

EDIT: What am I thinking, that portmanteau oughtta be Shoestreicher.

Hmmm, now that's got me wondering if there are any other good ones...

  • Oestryckert
  • Caravarro
  • Drewmaker
  • Walkmann (for the never-before-seen Jeff/Austin mashup)
  • Walkeravella

Ok, I'm done.

They should actually tag their QL with appropriate mashup names. Stuff like #Caravarro would be pretty sick.

Guys, I have to voice my supreme disappointment with this Quick Look; not only did you focus only on one playset/army, but you picked a DLC one. I love your content, but this was a very uninformative video in my opinion because it showed so little of the content that actually comes with the game. :(

I really wish this wasnt a tower defence game. I'm all for TDs, but its like people just dont make interesting ones. Placing towers in specific spots, and having actiony bits, its just all so... generic. I dont know. My expierence with TDs is still like wintermaul or greenTD from warcraft 3.

Anyway, great video, thanks! :3
