I love RO2 but the idea of spending hours upon hours in a virtual WW1 trench is just...odd.

Dan's child-like ignorance of important history aside, this game looks badass, awesome quick-look.

Dude... this has the best rifle scope I've ever seen in a video game. The fact that it renders whatever it's pointing at all the time in such clarity, and the ADS is so immersive. It just looks amazing.

I think red orchestra 2 has something very similar, if you ever want to check out another game like this.

Thanks for the trigger warning. I have very thin skin when it comes to not knowing history, even though I'm not that much of a nerd on that front anymore.

The reason British soldiers were known as "Tommies" was because the example name on various infantry forms was "Tommy Atkins". It's also suggested that it was a name used by underage teenagers who wanted to enlist.

The origins of the name are muddled (possibly a battle report letter from Jamaica, possibly The Duke of Wellington) but that is how and where it became a nickname for British soldiers.

WW1 was really a European War, Britain and France would have won with or without the US, the tide was already turning before the US even got involved. Problem the Germans had was supplies, the British Navy was unstoppable at the time and were starving Germany into submission.

I wish a bigger developer would try something like this, I have a lot of good memories palying Medal of Honor Allied Assault, I prefer the more slow, tactic and fighting in old towns.

@drewbert Tommy is from "Tommy Atkins" - it's basically just a generic English sounding name, I think, like calling German soldiers "Fritz"

I think the stick grenades were easier to throw longer distances but the pine cone ones were easier to bounce off of things or roll, so eventually most settled on pine cone grenades.

You should look up sticky anti tank grenades. You had to run up to an enemy tank and stick it to the tank, sometimes leading to soldiers running around without pants or other clothing because the grenade had managed to get stuck to them in the process.

The helmets were far from the silliest bits of world war one attire. There are pictures of cavalry wearing gas masks and spears. And hussarls with their cool hats and white gloves. I do know that this was because war was transitioning from being glorious to being hell. The people in command and the equipment were not made for hell, that came after the WW1 introduction of machine guns, gas and payloads so heavy and 'effective' (nobody had seen human bodies splinter and rip apart like this before) that it was just unimaginable for that time. Nobody was prepared.

I love this game. First playing it gets frustrating though. You die a lot and from really far away because you have to run through No Man's Land to get to the front. Once you figure out how to use the geography and the tempo and distance of the gun play the game can be real satisfying. Screw barbwire though

For the people that are interested in more realistic shooters like this, take a look at Insurgency. Also a HL2 mod turned full game, but in a modern military setting. Sadly it evaded coverage on GB, but it's definitely my favourite multiplayer shooter ever.

Drew was killed by a Sgt. Jack Marston. Anyone else notice that? Cool little 'what-if', where Red Dead takes place in 1911, and John's Marston's son eventually goes to war in 1917. And becomes the youngest Sgt for Amurca.
