Hey guys, if I were to break into the Warhammer 40k series, should I start at Dawn of War 1 or 2? Or even a non-40k game?

I know that with rts genre, later games are usually far better than earlier ones so there's no point playing any but the latest.  But this game is obviously way different, so I'm not sure what to expect.

Any help?

Game itself looks really good, too bad I bite it too often to have fun with RTS games. Would have been better if instead of the librarian class it was the archivist (april fools class) from Diablo3.

@Levio: I'd say get DoW2... the first one is pretty outdated aldready and looks quite ugly... additionally the totally changed the concept in the second game, so the first one won't do you any good if you want to play the second online sometime....

Thanks for the info Raiz!

The multitude of package deals available through Steam was confusing me, with all kinds of different combinations of the two games and expansions, but since its #2 that looks interesting to me, I guess I'll just go with that.

@Bummey:
The Chaos Sorcerer can do pretty much all that the librarian can do so... you have the "dome" in TLS. The level cap is 20 and you unlock a new item that gives you new spells/skills/traits. I already have beaten wave 20 and it's awesome!

Depends on what you want. I suggest DoW 1, it's still very playable and quite original at some points. Also, its campaign is actually a fucking tactical rts, not the piece of shit Diablo-esque/retarted Myth game it tries to be in DoW2.

If you like what you saw then go for DoW II.  DoW 1 is much more a traditional RTS like the quoted gentleman so eloquently pointed out, while DoW II is a very different experience.  Most RTS games don't play like DoW II, it's a fairly unique style that is more of a strategic RPG with loot and  a handful of persistent characters instead of hordes of units that are mostly expendable.  There isn't any base building or resource management, just a few objectives and the occasional defend mission, with a boss battle every once in a while as well.

Like it was said in the QL, DoW II is a great game to get your feet wet in RTS, it's limited to the essentials but not so much easy as it is focused.

As a person who usually despises RTS games, this game was highly enjoyable to me.  Take that FWIW.

Mike sounds a little too nervous for my liking. He should loosen up and have some banter with Dave.

Babylon 5 represent!
DOW2 had some interesting ideas for the SP, but I found it too repetitive, personally, but this seems to be much improved.  I  found the multiplayer interesting as well...but way to complex for me.

Aw, they totally dissed Demigod.  Understandable though, the game was a mess when it was released.  It's doing just fine now though.

ANYWAY, this quick look convinced me that I need to get this and get back into DoW2!

The BIG armor on that one fellow looks like the armor in an old game called "Space Hulk."

Dave, if you're reading this Brothers of the Snake is the best place to start in the Warhammer 40k universe.

@robj: Four years later, I hope you were kidding.

If so, funny joke. If not, probably even funnier.
