Film & 40s: The Exorcist

The power of Christ compels us to watch William Friedkin's 1973 horror classic! Presumably the power of Satan compelled us to do it while drinking.

An audio accompaniment to your movie viewing pleasure with your friends at Giant Bomb.

Max von Sydow

Pazuzu

Episode Notes:

This podcast is an audio supplement, meant to be played simultaneously with the film The Exorcist. We are watching Director's Cut of the film via a US Blu-ray release. It is the 2 hour and 12 minute version of the movie. As of the time of this posting, the Director's Cut is available for digital rental on multiple sites, but JustWatch and other streaming listing sites seemingly don't differentiate between the different versions and list the original version by default. Just be careful when you're picking your rental option.

Our commentary begins at the film's 10 second mark, right as the Warner Bros. logo first fades up.

@clockwork5: they mostly liked it. dan wants to be anywhere but there and talk about anything other than the movie. the group talks about weather, wrestling, someone fucking a shark, dan shit, the next movie theyre going to watch, risk, abby crushes on mahardy as usual, mahardy crushes on old men of the cloth. the movie is shockingly modern for a movie of the 70s and still disturbing! good feature overall but the event horizon one is still the king.

This was a great standalone listen since I've seen this film so many times. The Rocky fan fiction was hilarious! Had me thinking that an Exorcist 2020 would end with the Devil submitting to a rear naked choke.

Speaking of bad, neck related shit, I have a great personal story. Warning, medical nightmare ahead:

A few years back, I had a cyst suddenly appear on my neck. Doctor sent me to the hospital and after a bit of poking and prodding, they decided they needed to drain it. This consisted of a large gauge needle, and an ultrasound machine being used simultaneously. I was fully conscious for the procedure, and could clearly feel the cold metal in my neck. I could see the needle on the ultrasound machine as they used it to guide the needle in a few inches to where it needed to be. At some point, I had to swallow some saliva and could feel my muscles contracting around it. They sent the fluid for testing and luckily, it was benign and never returned.

It actually didn't bother me at all, but the experience will definitely stick with me. Not traumatic, just...memorable?

I love how much Mahardy loves priests. I too am a fan of the badass priest. I was also raised catholic, not so much these days, but I am a weirdo who likes to study the Bible academically in his free time. It's real rad yall. Its got all sorts in it. If they told us about all the wizard fights, werewolves, solving mysteries, and all that other stuff I would have paid a lot more attention to it in school.

Not a real horror guy (trying to catch up on some classics tho!), but this is one of my personal very faves. In a weird way it's very grounded and visceral compared to most. And it's funny how close and well it follows the book.

My great uncle brought my 17 year old mother to see this in theaters. He was a Catholic priest and said they still did exorcisms rarely. Also, I’m surprised Dan has never seen The Network before. Finally, it seems the beast crew can’t do math because 1973 minus 1929 is 44. The great make up and special effects artist Dick Smith did Max Von Sydow’s make-up to make him look 40 years older. Dick Smith also aged Dustin Hoffman in Little Big Man, Marlon Brando in The Godfather, and David Bowie in The Hunger vampire movie.

Check out David Bowie’s make-up In The Hunger. Smith aged Bowie 5 times starting with no make up at 35 or 36, minimal make up to make him look ever so slightly older at 44, a moderate to good amount of make up to make him look 55, a lot of make up to make him look 75, even more make up to make him look 90, and all the make up in the world to make him look 150 years old at the end of the movie. Check it out on Google image. It is amazing.

My favorite Exorcist thing is "Repossessed" the parody sequel to this that Linda Blair was in. It's very silly, but I love it. I think it's funny.

I haven't seen this in awhile. The Exorcist movies have always had this reputation around them that I think made them scarier then maybe they really are? Kind of like the reputation Demon's Souls has. It makes it scarier when you build it up in your mind. So, I haven't seen this first one since I was a kid. The third one with Brad Douriff is the one I always think of because Brad Douriff is so good at being menacing.
Anyway, this is a fun way to watch this. Looking forward to it!

As a fan of this movie (and one I watched very recently), this was a hard Film & Forties to listen to.

Is it me or did they talk a lot more over the movie than usual? Or is it that The Exorcist is more of a "real" movie than most F&F, so the talking gets more noticeable?

happy gremlins 2 is nex, honestly, I always found this movie either incredibly boring, and despite my respect for preactical effects innovations 'of the time', neither this nor any posession/cult movie has ever been scary or even interesting to me, and I LOVE horror- but religion plays such a microscopic role in my life i may just not be able to appreciate any nuance around diety horror. I know they aren't, but to me, they all blur together into a category of Religiritual with practical effects, which is just...rote now, and boring as a kid. That said it isnteresting to watch the cast have strong reactions I didn't have. praises sung aside, their personal history stories regarding the film were semi-cathartic as I gained a little more appreciation for a film that I find dull, but the crew very much knows and likes.]

his went up on my birthday, and really enjoyed the feature overall as an upbeat good time even if not my favorite film, wanted to say that every year since I was 21 I've been sick/in dire straits on my birthday, like some weird curse; anyway, I wanted to take a line or two to say it' ws particularly bad this year with illness and life is rough, and the content that went up on thursday/friday made for about as enjoy able a sick/stresed birthday can be during a rough year- Thanks everyone(including new-hire Mike and Jeff) sincerely!

Linda Blair did some soft-core porn later in her career. Including Chained Heat in 1983 and The Bare Wench Project In 2000. I kind of feel sorry for her because I think she is cute, really talented and I admire her. However, she can do whatever she wants, so good for her on the other hand.

Also, Linda Blair recently turned 60. When she did The Exorcist she was 12 or 13 and when I was born she was 29. I mean where does the time go?

P.S. The Rocky movies I like are 1, 3, and 5 as well as the new ones. 4 is redundant, silly, and honestly Stallone was too old to realistically represent the USA as a boxer in the Olympics. 5 at least tried something new and focused more on other characters such as Talia Shire. Also, I agree with Abby Fight Club is dumb and HD vibrating controllers make me cum too.

Linda Blair was excellent in The Exorcist. She deservedly won Best Supporting Actress at the Golden Globes. But the idiot bigots at the academy awards stiffed her because she “didn’t do the devil voices.” Like, No shit. How could a 12 year old girl do those demonic voices. Of course, they made a really big deal out of it and, subsequently, it really damaged Linda Blair’s confidence and self-esteem long term. Bastards. It wasn’t right I tell you.

P.S. Dan, If you are 35 now, there is no way you can be a doctor by 42. 4 years pre-med, 4 years medical school, 1 year internship, 4 years residency, and 2 years fellowship. You will be at least 49 by the time you are a board certified practicing full doctor, and that’s if every thing goes smoothly.

My father who was a big hippie and at the original Woodstock during the summer of love has the same birthday as Jason Miller (RIP gone way too soon) who played Father Karras, but instead of April 22,1939 my father was born 9 years later on April 22, 1948. I think Jack Nicholson has the same birthday too, but in 1937.

Oh god Dan, the reason the Catholic Church can give a sip of red wine to children and underage adults is because of the separation of church and state.

I’m surprised no one pointed out the great character actor who plays the detective. His name is Lee J. Cobb and he was in some Elia Kazan movies, playing Johnny Friendly in the Seminal 1954 movie “On The Waterfront,” Juror #6 in “12 Angry Men,” and “The Exorcist” was one of his last movies because he died in the mid ‘70s.

Finally, Lance Henriksen was in a couple Sydney Lumet films early in his career including Dog Day Afternoon and The Network. He played the driver in Dog Day Afternoon.

The first 5 seasons of Law And Order, especially the Michael Moriarty episodes, have good shots of old dirty New York City.

Edit: This was a great piece of content, but could the beast crew talk a little less during plot critical dialogue and talk a little more about the movie they’re are watching itself in the future. Thank you pretty.

They should do Rosemary’s Baby, The Shining, and Silence Of The Lambs next time. Also, An American Werewolf In London would be cool. Jacob’s Ladder too. And Psycho with Anthony Perkins!

I generally like Mike quite a bit when he's popped up on Beastcast cintent, but boy does he derail this one. Ive listened to quite a few of these commenaries and this is the only one where following the film and the commentary simultaneously was super difficult. Literally felt like he was just bringing up different topics nonstop.
