@swiftoid: IIRC since Bike fires before getting Mind Controlled, and since it was already half clip, it had to realod to attack, but since its AI it went for the reload, instead of punching the closer threat. GLad it reloaded though

@mattattack51: OMG right?! That 40% shot with the shotgun from the other side of the ship was Mind blowing, I was expecting him to use the pistol to trigger the berserker to walk into Suda's Overwatch, but against all odds, the shotgun hits, FROM THERE, just insane

I truly wonder if Dan is just trying to sabotage this series, because it isn't one of "his" games? I'd hate for them to stop this very entertaining concept just so they have to play another horrible game like Mario Party or Sunshine.

He's always said he really likes Nu-XCOM, so no.

People really feel the need to get worked up about them not playing right. Personally, I find what they're doing much more entertaining than watching someone do an optimal play-through.

But it's not one of "his" games, so I don't know?

And there is "playing right" vs "having fun and just going for things", sure. But just doing whatever without even bothering to read what is on the screen is another thing altogether. That's not fun or entertaining, that's plain stupidity. If it was another of Dan's "I'm doing stupid things because I don't want the "Dan" character to die whatever the cost (because wrestling?), I would just be sighing. But this is not that.

The XCOM team should make a game under the Aliens license. Maybe throw in Predators for good measure.

I... I had this down. I was watching the summary from the previous episode and the menuing, and that was keeping me from spontaneously combusting from all the bad gameplay decisions. It was a perfect plan. It was working.

Leave it to Dan to make me ragequit a video by randomly clicking things in menus. There's no safe place. This series is forfeit. I'm doomed. You go on without me. I'm just not strong enough.

As someone that had to play video games for years before learning English, it`s amazing how they don`t read anything. haha

I hear you. I played the first X-COM when my English was very spotty, and I still managed to complete it by fumbling around. Heck, videogames is how I learned a lot of it in the first place. I could still figure out the all-red warning pop-up probably meant I was doing something bad and important, though.

Why do some people feel the need to infer some grand and elaborate series of Russian-nesting-doll meta-layers to Dan, of all people? Like he's some kind of grand mastermind who has created so many subtle layers of dude playing a dude disguised as another dude personas that nobody can tell where his loyalties lie and every video is suspect?

Sure, Dan Ryckert may very well be some grand Machiavellian schemer who carefully crafts his multi-layered persona in order to specifically infuriate you, the Dan-hating viewer. Or maybe he just mis-clicked a prompt. It's a shoot, brother, it's not a work.

For anyone complaining about Dan dismissing Donna and Gita (which I agree was a boneheaded moment), consider that the Assault the Alien Base mission is extremely difficult and can be generally counted on to take at least two squadmates lives in the bargain. So as far as I'm concerned it was a wash anyway. As Vinny said, his methods are unconventional, but he gets results.

I ragequit before the gameplay, but credit where it's due. I was not recklessly dismissing soldiers or wasting cash and I still wiped on this mission on my first blind Iron Man playthrough. Like, wiped. My entire A squad, dead. Left with only squaddies and rookies for the back half of the game.

In my defense, this was vanilla 1.0 XCOM, which was NOT messing around and didn't have a bunch of Robocop 2-ass mech units to give you freebies. But still.

The thing I love about this episode is that at the end, Dan and Vinny are both like, "NAILED IT!" I can only assume that Vinny spotted the horrible errors at the beginning while editing, but maybe not. I like to think they had a very high opinion of this episode until the comments started to appear.

Yeah, but on the other hand those Mechtoids are new to Enemy Within, and those can deal out a lot of damage if you let them (luckily Dan handled them well). So it's not as if the mission is any easier than before.

First time I played vanilla XCOM, that Sectoid Commander mind-controlled my best sniper who damn near wiped my whole squad, and I got backed into a corner where I had to take her out myself. I finished the mission with 2 survivors. Dan did great here.

This is a GB feature that I more consistently read the comments of than I do watch the videos for. Go figure, but they're hilarious. I will definitely watch this one though, if only after seeing Gita's reaction on Twitter.

Haven't watched this series since its 2018 return, but thank goodness I haven't because I'm not sure I could've handled Dan's unique staffing choice if I were still committed to this.

Edit: LMAO. They actually high five at the end of the mission, completely unaware of the significant mistakes they made before the mission even started.

I think I get it now, I always love reading these comments as the anger is so interesting, obviously its just a video game, it doesn't matter about deleting soldiers or silly mistakes. Then however you realise it does, because we are invested in the story, in the characters, in having a fun time. When Dan ruins that with just carelessly clicking through menus it completely ruins that story that we are engaging with. Its not the heel persona or the abomination stuff, that's ok as it tells a story, but this is, it's like deleting a page of script because you are too lazy to read. What's the point of the story I'm following if you can't be bothered to just take a little bit of care. I know it's not on puspose and it's a video game so who cares, like any entertainment format really, but bad storytelling sucks and lack of care sucks even more. So I shall do the thing I think shows like this have needed for a while especially as Giantbomb has left alot of the journalistic elements behind and don't get me wrong I love that and this series, but more feedback is needed so....

** - needs better care and attention to details if they want to tell a story effectively.

On the flip, it's not too serious but hope the feedback is heard. It's funny, the crew have said a few times they don't listen to the Internet and rightly so however you can't grow as a performer, (which they all are) without positive and constructive feedback. Anyway this throughly expanded on my thoughts on Internet video game personalities!

At the start of the video they explained that they hadn't played the games for about 2 months so it's a bit much to expect Dan to remember how everything works and don't forget that Vinny was also there and didn't realize that Dan dismissed the soldiers when he was obviously just trying to swap them.

Other than that I think Dan did pretty well in the mission to not lose anyone and i'm really looking forward to the mission briefing on the next video.

Wow, can't believe they made it through the whole episode without realizing Dan's fuck-up. Though I later realized Vinny can't see red or else he probably would've noticed something when the BIG RED WARNINGs came up and said they were permanently losing those soldiers.

I love Dan, but I hate watching him play this game. READ for 2 seconds damnit! Failing to actually click on the power generator which resulted in him deleting then restarting an uplink, building two regular generators, when he could've saved a space and money by building an elerium generator, not reading that the Mech-2 upgrades had MELD requirements, and last but not least, DISMISSING TWO SOLDIERS! Christ. I love Vinny too, but some of that also falls on him for also not paying attention.

As far as the mission goes, Dan once again demonstrates either he is terrible at strategy or just doesn't care. Consistently dashing guys blindly, splitting up the squad, putting guys out in the open to get "Fuck You!" shots thus exposing them to enemy fire. You could hear the frustration in Vinny's voice as he envisioned the entire squad dying. But, I guess sacrificing Gita and Donna to RNJesus paid off, and he got ridiculously lucky.

@cornwarrior:

You pretty much summed everything wrong with Dan's turn.

I only played the game on Normal mode once, I forgot how forgiving everything is, from alien behaviour to the dice rolls. If they were playing on Classic they would have been obliterated in this mission.

If it weren't for the first 15 minutes, this would be a hero's tale. Instead, we lost 2 soldiers because Dan didn't bother to read.

FWIW, I think it is dumb to have that Dismiss button there in the first place. That's poor design. However, HOLY BALLS, DAN! Read and take your time, duder. My anxiety was through the roof for most of that video.

I'm just getting around to watching this video and I choose to believe that intro was meant to sell more copies of "Anxiety as an Ally".

I have enjoyed everything Dan has done in 2018. Being friendly and earnest, and not being a fake character.

Even here, though he made terrible mistakes, he did it being himself. So good job everyone. I hope they survive long enough to learn and improve from these mistakes.
