The Giant Beastcast: Episode 158

We tick a bunch of things off the game list including E3 prep, Fallout 76, and a new Sonic racing game! We also discover more essentials that make Dan tick... like his knowledge of baking soda. Finally, Jeff spends a lot of time talking about a tick on his taint.

The Giant Bomb East team gathers to talk about the week in video games, their lives, and basically anything that interests them. All from New York City!

In disagreement with Vinny, the core Pokemon RPGs are very mechanically dense. I think it's accessible in a way because you can get through those games without engaging with most of the mechanics, but things like EVs, IVs, Catch rates, encounter rates, berries, poke puffs, hundreds of items, hundreds of moves, almost 1000 pokemon. It has a hell of a lot of baggage and density.

But those aren't really gameplay mechanics, they're grinding mechanics. Yeah, there are a bunch of ways to influence the stats, 4 moves, passives, etc. that your Pokemon have, but at the end of the day those are just ways to customize your Pokemon while grinding/preparing for battle. Once you're actually playing the battles, it's a painfully simple battle system where you only have 4 moves per Pokemon.

@everton1066:

TB introduced me to GB too. But, Giantbomb and TB were just in different circles, aside from the similarities between WTF and QL. TB's podcasts are mostly with other youtubers, whereas the occasional guest on Bombcast are friends of the site and/or industry people. GB had TB on one video/side-podcast, never crossed path otherwise, and never mentioned any other causes TB championed for, like steam curation for 60fps, promotion and casting for starcraft2, etc. This was the case even before 2014, prior to any controversy and before TB being forced to lessen his work load. They also don't comment much on Youtuber/influencer activity (or semi-gaming related news such as youtube monetization changes) in general. I don't understand why some think GB "owes" him a mention in the podcast.

Also, in regards to "TB did more for their games lifespan than this site ever will and that's a fact my friends": I don't think Jeff and co cares, because Giantbomb isn't positioned as an influencer site. Both had their own niche, with TB focusing on indie and lesser known titles, while GB does more with mainstream games and old games. TB should be proud of his role in pushing some games he is passionate about towards the center of attention. And GB is perfectly happy in their archiver/historian role (for instance, recent efforts to upgrade the wiki system).

Jesus Vinny get rid of that saw chain nonsense and just get a silky saw. The calories and heartache you’ll save over using that gimmick will be worth the extra space and weight. I’ve seen a few of those and even people who were good at working the chain wasted so much energy using it.

And as for Abby questioning bears in the area, there are thousands of black bears in NY and NJ has a problem with bears. Which will only get worse caving to non-conservationists on the bear hunting in the state. When you live in a part of the country where the most human-dense state in the union has a problem with bears, it’s probably smart to be aware of your surroundings when in the wilderness.

To remove a tick grab it as close to your skin as you can and remove it with steady, smooth force. With tweasers!

I will NEVER understand how people can enjoy the heat. It actually boggles my mind! I'm sitting here listening to Abby say she loves hot summer nights and flailing my arms in disbelief! When the temperature is hitting high 70s I start dying and don't wanna do anything.

What?? The game is called... FAR: Lone Sails? Not to mention we just had a game called Frostpunk. Maybe video game titles have always been dumb, but this is getting out of hand. These ones are a new kind of bad. I secretly love it?

I watched Napoleon Dynamite every single day during the summer of 2005.
I've only seen it once or twice since then, but nothing comes even close to the "movie I've seen most" award

He used his platform to make gaming a worse place for many people, and that's part of his legacy, unfortunately.

Yeah, that's a fair assessment. But generally I'm with Vinny in thinking that the Pokemon games are, overall, kinda simple. Play one game, and you've kinda seen everything the series has to offer. You can take a deep dive on learning IVs and everything about minmaxing your Pokemon training, but the series still kinda strikes me as Baby's First JRPG in terms of a still having a very simple battle system, and usually a pretty dull story. I know some people swear by the PVP and I'll give them that, but I couldn't even make it all the way through my second Pokemon game because so much of the PVE felt like repeated/recycled concepts with no meaningful differences.

It's got a delightful anime setting and I enjoyed watching the Pokemon anime when I was younger, but I cannot fathom how people play game after game of Pokemon. It has barely changed in the past 20 years.

Could you point me in the direction of information regarding what you are talking about? Feel free to send me a PM, It would also be interesting to hear more about your take on it.

Total Biscuit were someone who I looked up to quite a bit. Not because of his content or opinions, but just seeing how he changed during the years, learning to get less angry, trying to take responsibility for mistakes and generally being a real human being. I think in some small ways, the man taught me to be more honest with myself. We are all humans, we all make mistakes. He really did put himself out there, something I feel is rare. I would've never had the balls to do so myself.

Those who are commentating about being disappointed.. Some of us are grieving. I finally cried two days ago and I never cry. I do not want to put words in other peoples mouths, but seeing how TB always recommended GiantBomb, him being validated by the people he looked up to means a lot.. Somehow. Feelings are strange.

Thank you for the mentioning TB's passing Vinny, I was hoping you would. May he rest in peace with all the FOV sliders a man could ever wish for. <3

@francium34: IS GB primed as an archival/historian site? I do wonder what is the percentage of Giant Bomb patrons, or visitiors that come to the site for the Wiki and people that come to the site for QL and generally video content featuring the crew? Personally I came to GB through the E3 podcasts 6-7 years ago. I had a friend that always talked about them and when I moved cities and jobs, during one of the more boring days at work in the summer decided to check out what these "podcasts" were all about (I know, like 10 years late to the party). From the amazing Duke Nukem impressions I was hooked and then started coming to the site for the QL's and such. Getting to the point I had never really interacted with Giant Bomb on the Wiki level. Back when there were Quests I contributed to a few Wiki pages for games I thought not a lot of people were interested in but I enjoyed, and that was about it.

Really curious how many other folk come here just for video.

If I had to do the time travel thing I would go back to the era when international exploring was just starting to happen, and bring with me a big ol book of Ordanance Survey Maps. Incredibly detailed maps of land and sea. They would be pretty much priceless. Could start my own East India Shipping Co.

@humanity: More or less. I come to GB for the content they produce, audio and video. I interact with the community a tad. Occasionally I'll use it to look something up or ask a question, maybe some news. I don't ever use it for anything historical and I don't add to the wikis.

It does shock me how some people are getting so...enraged because a small group isn't acknowledging one man's death. As far as I know, they didn't have any kind of rapport with the guy. I didn't follow or even know of him so I don't know what Vinny was talking about and won't comment. He obviously meant a lot to a lot of people (in both ways apparently), but one shouldn't need to have his life and death acknowledged by a small few. The fact he had an impact on you should be enough.

I just hate it when stuff like this is brought up everywhere and constantly. Kinda like that game that cam out a few months back. But maybe that's just me.

And also a small correction while I'm here: Dan, you're wrong. MacGruber sucks and is a terrible movie ?

I play it for that reason. It's light and easy and I don't have to think too much. Just a pleasant experience of catching more pokemon for my collection and watching the numbers go up.

I think this is the nice way to view Pokemon in that it recognizes a game that is largely intended for children that can be enjoyed by adults for various reasons.

But if you grow up and find yourself demanding more and more it is okay to just leave your old toys behind for others.

Just to be clear about the PSP version of Rondo that Dan turned his nose up at: It's a 2.5D remake of Rondo, but that's not why anyone would recommend it.

In it, you can unlock both the original Rondo and Symphony of the Night, which makes it a pretty great package even if the "main game" isn't great.

@mendia: I like it when it’s hot enough to make me sweat freely in a situation where I can be outdoors with even the slightest breeze. There’s an uncomfortable temperature range below like 85 that can be a bit unpleasant and I hate a hot building unless it has good air circulation. But walking outside sweating my balls off? I’m down.
