Cool to see a GB playthrough of this. Surge 1 was a competent sci-fi Souls-like despite having a fair bit of jank to it.

Jason playing all my underrated favorite on his streams!

Really enjoyed this one (it's on both PC/Console Game Pass for those interested)

Some tips for Jason if he reads these

  • Always target limbs in combat - it is never not worth targeting limbs and going for the default lock-on
  • Yellow limbs take less damage but give you schematics or materials / blue limbs are unarmored and take more damage but give nothing in return
  • That first enemy you fight outside the med bay in the city has a really decent starting gear set so it's worth to craft it
  • Gear sets give 2 tiers of bonuses, one bonus for wearing 3 pieces and another bonus for wearing the full set so you can mix and match
  • To upgrade armor and weapons you need to look for enemies that are higher level than you indicated by the number next to their name -> Enemies that are level 2 will drop mark.2 materials which allows you to upgrade that armor piece/weapon to mark.2
  • So the whole game is basically cutting off an arm you like to get the schematic and then cutting it off a few more times to get the material to craft it. Then you murder doods of higher level to keep upgrading your gear until you find a set that is better or has better bonuses.

ALSO

  • If you are full on health and have excess energy after a fight, you can hold down B to bank that heal for later. You can upgrade that chip/skill to be able to bank more heals.
  • Parries aren't that necessary for 90% of the game but some bosses - specifically the very next boss Jason has to fight - really benefit from being able to pull them off. Some regular enemies are also easier if you learn one of their attacks to parry. Once you find chips/skills that give you a damage boost after a successful parry they become really useful.

The Surge 2 is wildly underrated, one of my favourites from 2019. It does the interconnected world “wait, I’m back here?” thing better than a lot of Souls-likes.

I need to go back to the first game’s DLC, if only I could port my progress from the PS4 to PC somehow.

Beat this game and never once parried anything, probably made some bosses / enemies harder but overall once you get past the initial hump of not having any armour, I found the game to be easier than most soul-likes.

I started playing this game last weekend and enjoyed it enough (and had nothing better to do) to finish about 75% of the game in two days. While I don't like it quite as much as the Dark Souls games, I do find it much better than the original game, which I got bored of half way though.

Only negative really is that the game have gotten a bit to easy after I properly learned to parry. I find it much easier than in Dark Souls thanks to the implant that gives prompts for directions and it being a bit more forgiving.

I haven't been able to keep up with GB for a while, but I'll always watch a Souls-like. Best streaming games IMO. Surge 2 was great. I just wanted to point out a thing most people don't know regarding the graffiti Jason looks at at 14:58. The image is of a guy's face and is says "Use the time YOU have - Y.G." There is a video on YouTube of the devs playing some of the game and they talk about a terminally ill kid that was a fan of the first game. He wasn't going to live to see this game released so they let him play it early. They weren't sure he'd live long enough to finish the game, so they put this in early so he would get to see it. He apparently finished the game before he died.

GB is being weird and won't let me post the video. This links to YouTube and what I'm referring to.

Awesome, dunno if this was a shot in the dark pull by Jason haha but, cool, I am in.

Played a little of the surge 1 on PS4, but watching this and 20 minutes in I now have 2 on steam- I dunno, was there a 'bareknuckle' weapon in 1? IDK if this misremembering but I feel like the performance/aliasing/flow to the game on a base ps4 wasn't awesome, and this looks really clean and paced by comparison? Also, yes, Jason that IS an awesome block animation. Animations go a long way, I am always confused by how little flair souls puts into run cycles, blocking, rolling, and is where souls-spinoffs actually do better. IMO. I could totally go for a science fiction soulsian in the void that is Control-withdrawl while I wait on that second DLC.

For some reason I am a fan of the character customization though have to give some props to how the first one opened. I dunno, that's how I do.

Have a feeling I'll really dig playing this, along with jason if he continues it. Good choice, it definitely informed me on a game I would have passed up.

I bought the GOG version of this a while ago and I missed "how to parry" somehow, so apparently it's easy to miss messages. But I'm definitely in the mood to give this game another go now. It seems really cool.
