The Very Online Show 20: The Internet Never Forgets?

This time on the Very Online Show, Lucy goes into the history of how we preserve the internet's history! Watch out for lewd thumbnails, though.

Tamoor Hussain and Lucy James are very online. Jeff Bakalar is only sorta online.

It was fun trying to remember sites I haven't thought about in 15+ years.

notpron.com was one that you guys reminded me of, that was a weird sort of puzzle site that gets harder and harder. surprisingly its still live!

also, newgrounds games. terrible newgrounds games.

Makes me sad about where GB will be in 50 years. I don't mean that in the doomsayer sense, just that nothing lasts forever and when I'm 70 I doubt I'll be able to rewatch the Deadly Premonition Endurance Run.

I lost a TON of photos when MySpace imploded. I put them up like they were cloud storage and made room on my SD cards. I learned my lesson and when I deleted my facebook, I got not one but two copies of the zipfile full of all my photos saved in two separate hard drives.

Another great one! Actually got me thinking of my white whale video from 15ish years ago. I looked all over for it a few years ago and actually tweeted a person who was in said video to make sure I wasn't making it up. Went and did a quick search today and found it! Someone actually uploaded a copy a few months ago. Crazy!

Pouring one out for Screened (the movie and TV website Rorie and Alex were the main people on in the Whiskey Media days), which fits this topic perfectly. There's an archive of some of the videos from it on Youtube but a lot of that content is lost to time along with their wiki that a bunch of people poured time into.

On a different note, I've run into accounts on Twitter talking about and sharing stuff from "the old days" (mostly pre-social media dominated internet. Stuff from like 2000 to 2010 or so) and some of that stuff is pretty rough to go back to. I went through a Twitter account of old memes and videos and it seemed like every fifth or sixth piece of content was problematic in some way. Casual racism and homophobia showed up a lot mid-2000s internet. There's still stuff from back then on Youtube that is pretty eye-opening to watch these days.

I just went and looked, and all of the Endurance Run videos are in that GB quick looks collection on archive.org. That collection appears to be more than just quick looks. So as long as archive.org still exists you're good.

@ben_h: thank you for letting me know, but one day archive.org will also fade into the cosmic background. All these moments will be lost to time….like tears….in rain.

@tartyron: I guess you better start buying external hard drive storage, and downloading every single GB video to store it manually in perpetuity :D

Unfortunately you might be right with the wiki and the articles unless Rorie and Alex kept their own copies. However, on a positive note, I have it good authority that the video side of Screened is not permanently lost. Whether they can made available again, I have no idea but it is in safe hands. My hope is that at some point, a certain handsome video editor can upload them somewhere when the coast is clear.

@rhombus_of_terror: Always glad when someone links some Screened archives. I'll end up watching a bunch of videos. Some of the best edited content to ever come out of Whiskey.

“Jeff Bakalar talks about the Zune on G4” is not something I expected to see today, but my life is richer for it.

(Just amazing edits btw VB. I also admire your restraint not circling the video by you that appeared when Lucy was scrolling through video game content.)

I read something a while back that we don't really make an effort to retain information itself, it's more efficient to maintain where we can find that information. So, with the advent of the internet, and a lot of us growing up on it, our memory is trash, because we can just find whatever we need online whenever.

Not sure about the validity of that, though.

Damn, I remember spending so much time trying to puzzle out notpr0n with friends during our breaktimes at school. That shit was so much fun, and actually an interesting introduction to starting to understand the way websites were put together.

Tam, that Sony Vegas keygen music is most probably Unreal Superhero 3 by Kenet and Rez (of Razor 1911, iirc.)

That tune is pretty famous :)

Having made a few websites in the 90s and early 2000s I can vouch for stuff not remaining on the internet.. Geocities ain't as hot as it used to be.. Not that I miss those sites, they were not great, but still, all gone. I don't think Geocities was backed up in a way that all the stuff there survived. Too costly.
