I had fun watching this and thinking about the reflexive nature of these games. They play around with self-referential concepts so deeply that they seem to be purposely designed to tangle together. It is a neat thought experiment and worth the analysis, even if moral of the story cautions against it. I don't think they could ever be cleanly unraveled and that's something that can be taken away from it. Have some laughs and learn something about yourself. Sugar and medicine. Cheese and broccoli.

I genuinely really enjoyed the video, VB! Hope to see more in time when it makes sense for you. Also, incredibly impressed with this given how busy things have been for months now! Getting footage from 2 narrative games to line up similar dialogue is a time sink! When the Janager's away, The VB will play!

The first Stanley Parable rubbed me the wrong way; all that quirky fourth wall-breaking humor just came off as annoyingly smug to me. The playful and literate qualities of SP obviously deserve some in-depth critical discussion, though, and I enjoyed this video a lot more than the game itself.

Thank you for bringing The Beginners Guide into the conversation! It's one of my favorite games. I used to write (very bad) film reviews for fun, and it was interesting to unpack my need to engage in criticism - do I want to look and sound smart? Do I yearn for a connection with like-minded film-lovers? Do I want to learn more about my relationship with film, art, and myself? The answer is probably a little of all of these, and also probably some secret fourth or fifth reasons that I don't have the insight to understand yet. I still love film. But I also love the feeling of someone loving a movie that I like. Why? I think it feels like I'm being seen or understood. Like you said about Davey's interpretations of "Coda's" games - he often projected a lot of his own shit onto those games and made them about Coda. In that way, I think how we see art, be it film, video games, or music, sometimes has a lot more to do with ourselves than the art itself.

This would be a great video anywhere, but it's especially nice to see it on GB where there has historically been a bit of disrespect for narrative focused games. Maybe Outer Wilds next?
