Have not listened to the podcast yet, but assuming this is a Dubs vs Subs discussion, the answer is subs for MOST things before the mid 2000s or so, and dubs for MOST things after.

They really stepped their dub game up in the past decade or so, to the point where there's no real reason to go with subs when dubs exist.

Nah. I'll agree they're generally not terrible any more, but dubs are still worse than subs pretty much across the board.

I can't help but disagree. I've watched a decent amount of dubs of recent anime and always find at least once voice that's just incredibly bad, along with changes of dialog that can completely change characters and/or scenes.

EDIT: I just noticed you said dubs are still worse for the most part, my bad!

@arjann: I'll almost always take a good dub over any sub. And most of my favorite animes are ones with great dubs.

For me its that I'm never able to square away english intonations and the overaggerations of what's on screen. I need the extremes for both.

It's mostly really bland voice acting, or just really bad voices in general, example being the series Prison School they gave Andre a voice that sounds like Smeagol from LotR. It's ridiculously bad and doesn't fit the character. In the simuldub (or whatever the original online dub was called) they threw in gamergate references into a scene, which was thankfully removed in the actual release. Then Maid Dragon gives Lucoa a valley girl voice, and changes dialog of characters which changes the meaning of what some characters say. For the most part I'd say dubs are still middling quality at best, with some exceptions on the 'actually pretty good' side of things. But! If someone prefers the dubs then that's great! Like what you like, watch what you want. It doesn't really matter in the end! There's a few shows I'd recommend watching the dubbed version over subs any day though (FMA, Cowboy Bebop, and Baccano, for example).

I do wish they got more voice actors for dubs though, there seems to be so few and some of them are very samey, along with one or two male and female voice actors I just can't stand the voice of, like the main dude in Highschool of the Dead just sounds bored half the show There's also a few female voice actors that just sound very breathy/weird, that's mostly when they're voicing younger characters it feels like, using HotD as an example again, iirc the Teacher had the voice that I hate. It just sounds so artificial.

Man anime nerds are the worst. You guys can't even **see** the words "subs" and "dubs" together without needing to put on your splaining pants and start lecturing the room about which is better in your expert opinions. I haven't listened to the podcast yet either but I truly hope that the context that subs and dubs get brought up in is Jeff and Ben talking about how awful arguments between subs and dubs zealots are and not an actual debate about subs vs dubs.

The French dubs for Cowboy Bebop: The Movie and Paprika are very good and I can't watch those movies any other way.

But yeah, subs. For Russian films or Japanese animes, subs always.

I think the Japanese voices for most of the TV anime I've watched subbed are too similar most of the time, the guys all seem to have the same gruff voice. I think English actors sound more varied, and these days the bad lines are because the original lines are the kind of dopey sentiment you get in lots of anime, and Yakuza games, because of a Japanese way of thinking that's a little too touchy-feely, or something. I always watch anime movies with the original Japanese voices, though.

To the garden person. If you're growing tomatoes, I generally prefer growing small/cherry tomatoes. I find its easier to incorporate them into all kinds of food as well as just eating them straight off the vine. I keep a couple full size but any more than that and I find that they get over ripe easily and go uneaten.
