Giant Bomb Presents: Xbox's Chris Charla Breaks Down ID@Xbox

Microsoft used Gamescom to reveal its Independent Developers @ Xbox program, and I had a chance to talk with the director of the program about what the company hopes to accomplish.

Giant Bomb Presents is giantbomb.com's home for interviews, previews, and more.

If this makes it easier for Transistor to eventually be on the XONE, then awesome.

It's part of our internal system. The podcast title is what spits out to iTunes, and we wanted this with Giant Bomb branding.

At one point ID was an indie developer. Doom was an Indie game. Think about that.

I like how people forget that Microsoft was supporting the shit out of the indie community until a few years ago when Steam "surpassed" them and it became really trendy to hate on Microsoft. Or how Sony is saying the exact same thing right now despite having an actively hostile relationship with not just indies but any small developer that was publishing games on PS3 (even Sony owned teams) over the last 2-3 years (if not the entirety of the PS3's life cycle if you start examining some of Sony's policy decisions).

Microsoft is one of the catalysts for the indie scene being what it is today - yes, they have pissed off people like Phil Fish and some of their policies recently weren't great or became outdated, but they were involved a lot more than people have been giving them credit for as of late.

I should point out that I'm glad Sony is trying to make amends this time around but I have so little faith after what the PS3 has been.

Xbox Live Indie is like YouTube comments: everyone talks about what a sewer it is, almost entirely devoid of good or useful content, until it's taken away. Then suddenly, devs/conversation is being "supressed" and "crushed."

I'm totally looking forward to seeing how navigating around indie titles turns out. ID pushed out to release time schedule should be interesting to see.

Exactly. People tend to forget that XBLA was a very unique initiative that helped promote a lot of indie developers at a time when literally no one else was bothering with them. Jonathan Blow might talk a lot of trash about working with Microsoft after the fact, but the truth is that back then no one else was probably going to give him the time of day since no one had an active Indie program like XBLA. Yet ironically now Sony is talking up it's indie scene like it did anything for it during their PS3 cycle and everyone is triumphantly celebrating their crowning achievement of a promise, while simultaneously talking a hot mess about Microsoft despite the many indie classics they helped usher onto the mainstream market. Not to mention the fact that a lot of XBLA games make their way over to the PC so you can enjoy them if you don't own an XBOX, unlike the death-like grip Sony has on any of it's exclusive properties - good luck ever enjoying Journey unless you own a Sony console.

The most interesting thing that jumped out to me was the idea of "turning on your TV" to view content instead of turning on your Xbox. You can tell that's something he's been coached to say due to MS wanting the Xbox to be "always on". Really cool that anyone can publish a game without spending a dime (if they're approved for the program of course). Curious to see how lenient the rules are. The current XBLA indie scene is wrought with crapware in spite of a community run approval process.

List of great indie games, Half-Life first game Valve released after Gabe and partner Mike Harrington broke off from Microsoft to start the company. The Lost Vikings is the most notable beginnings of Blizzard Entertainment. Even indie games in our current day such as Super Meat Boy, Braid, Limbo, and Bastion set bars of AAA games today.

Only thing that seemed kind of sour was right near the end when discussing price. The guy said it'll be a reseller where the publisher sets wholesale price, but MS will decide what the game actually retails for. Hopefully this will be another course correction they can do down the road, to allow at least some flexibility in pricing on the publisher/dev side of things.

Why did they they think they could call it id@xbox? Why not ego at Xbox? Or for that matter call it Super Ego at Xbox?

Do they even think of what names they use? Even a damn child knows the 'three part' structural model of the psyche by Sigmund Freud - Id, Ego, Super Ego. They didn't think people would pick up on the use of Id? Well, this from the folks who decided xb + one was a good idea to make Xbone.

Just call it Indie@Xbox or something with a full idea at teh front that doesn't make an unfortunate spelling of something else.
