Playdate: XCOM 2

I actually found XCOM 2 to be a disappointment. Especially compared to the highs I had with the first one. I really disliked the timed missions.

That being said: I will always enjoy watching Vinny play it.

I always wanna go back and finish my Xcom 2 save but I had like 90 mods and didn't back them all up so I probably wouldn't be able to do anything without starting over this far along into the game's release. That was back when War of the Chosen came out.

Anyways, after the disappointment of Phoenix Point here is hoping to an Xcom 3.

I truly forgot how much War of the Chosen added, and not JUST the entire cast of TNG minus Patrick Stewart.

In XCOM 3 we find out that the aliens were ghosts this who time.

War of the chosen is superb and made the game perfect for me. Gutted I missed this playdate but glad Vinny is enjoying it.

Either way, I'm glad Vinny is rediscovering XCOM 2. A fantastic game!!...and for years a game labeled as "bad" around this side of the internets ( with folks always having to say" it's actually good" in chat if and when it comes up). Can't wait for whatever happens with WoTC!

Well, this might just get me to play this game I bought at launch and never launched!

I was so disappointed in XCom 2. Every game design change felt tailor-made to preventing me from playing the game the way I wanted.

When the right way to use the sniper class is to not use the sniper rifle, you have fucked up.

At launch, I remember not liking XCOM 2 very much. It wasn't until after War of the Chosen was added that it all clicked for me.

@luciddreams117: @csl316 War of the Chosen DLC really made the game a lot better overall. I was also lukewarm when 2 came out (even without all the bugs and slowdowns) but I got War of the Chosen on sale and man, does it make this game better. It's like the jump from Enemy Unknown (which is great if not a bit repetitive) to Enemy Within.

Figured I would check out Steam and see if the game is on sale or something. It's a 4 year old game. You can get a bundle with XCOM 2, War of the Chosen, and three packs for $70.30. The individual pricing is insane, though.

Some of this armor is wild.

I think wotc made them less obnoxious, i don't recall it being an issue in my most recent wotc playthrough anyway. It seemed like every mission i remembered as 8 turns had turned into 12 anyway. Literally never an issue.

Regarding gunslinger - they are sillly, silly good against the droves of enemies that swarm (forgetting the names of those missions). They can basically kill everything they can see in one turn with pistols because of how ammo works, and then you run out of stuff to kill before you run out of turns/ammo.

I don't like the direction they went with Xcom2. I hated all the limited number of turns stuff. it made me save scum a lot. I liked taking my time in Xcom1.

Something is wrong with the lighting. It makes it look like Vinny is wearing red.

I bought XCOM 2 day one and after the third mission with a timer I uninstalled it. When the mod came out that removed the mission turn limits I reinstalled it and had a great time. I really don't think the turn limits added anything to the game.

my god, not to blow things out of proportion but i feel like every time vinny says “this game is so good” it's a mental high five to everyone who kept a candle lit on this site for xcom 2 since launch.

the bugs were gnarly- no doubt. but every time someone conflated poor software performance with bad game mechanics i felt like i was having an aneurysm.

Vinny got so lucky with that sniper I was sweating bullets feeling bad that he's about to lose him and then the RNG blessed him.

Love this game! I'm playing it right now while I watch the stream. It's the perfect game to play while I listen to a book and I've sunk countless hours into it. Vinny, I think you are going to really enjoy WOTC.

War of the Chosen really makes this game so much better, it's crazy. I enjoyed watching Austin and Rob over at Waypoint playing through almost the whole thing a while ago, on ironman. It's up on Youtube for anyone interested, it's a real roller coaster of a ride.

Those aren't in the base game. You're thinking of The Lost, which were added in WOTC.

XCOM 2 ruled. This thread is full of lunatics. The timed missions were a smart addition because it meant you couldn't just overwatch spam and had to actually engage with the systems.

I've been playing a lot of LW2 recently, having had the same Phoenix Point disappointment followed by urge for XCOM as Vinny, and had a mission where I had 10 rounds to fight through 5 pods of sectoid commanders, viper variants that are immune to overwatch, and ADVENT heavy gunners/rocketeers to get to and destroy a relay. Personally, found that shit exhilarating. Just unloading area suppression from gunners and leaving an entire city block a smouldering ruin to get the objective complete with only 2 rounds to spare. It's a shame Long War 2 is so.... long because I'm unlikely the ever finish a campaign, but it imposing even more brutal time constraints or reinforcement schedules when you try to undertake missions where ADVENT is focusing their forces leads to some crazy missions.

The timer is just another enemy.

I didn't come to this conclusion at all in my playthrough. I had one main sniper spec'd for sniping, and another for the gunslinger abilites, and my actual sniper is what carried me through the latter half of the game. The Kill Zone and Serial abilities you get toward the end, combined with weapon mods/other abilities that gave them 100% accuracy at virtually all times, definitely saw my sniper racking up the majority of my squad's kills, all while staying completely out of harm's way.

@garr123: Amen. XCOM2, especially with WOTC is some of the most fun I've had gaming. I never quite understood the hate XCOM2 got- the timed missions were fun as they force you to be more aggressive, but you can modify those settings too.

Really cannot wait for XCOM3, whenever that comes around.

When you eventually play War of the Chosen, don't forget about the Tactical Legacy Pack DLC for WotC! It not only adds some cool challenge modes, but also some smaller goodies AND a killer new soundtrack for the game--that you can use whenever you want.

It was Firaxis' sendoff to XCOM 2; and it shows.

XCOM 2 is such a classic. If you love the base game, I think you'll love WotC even more!

But gunslingers are pretty good, in my playthrough they worked best as heavy killers due to burst damage. Throw some bluescreen rounds on a pistol and that shit will shred a sectopod in one turn

Watching this makes me want to replay WotC. It was such a good expansion and it put XCOM 2 in my top ten games of the decade.
