MGS 1 on PlayStation one for me, unbeatable game at the time with a great story before it well all crazy in the later editions

I also have to say MGS 1.Not quite sure of the reasons though. Maybe because of the fairly realistic story compared to the later games. I still have an enormous respect for the series, but MGS4 really hit home the fact how much MGS1 meant to me as a game

I'm gonna say MGS2. I was totally blown away by that game. And I actually didn't mind too much about playing as Raiden though it did throw me off a bit.

I'll have to say Metal Gear Solid 4, simply because it has all the previous games as a basis. If you think about it, it does! You look at Snake in a completely different way if you've seen all the other games he's been in, because it fleshes out his character a lot more.

MGS2, When you have to sneak by past the marines at the speech to get the Metal Gear photos was awesome.

    MGS3 > MGS1 > MGS2 for me.

I haven't played the fourth game yet.

I really loved MGS1 and always considered it the best MGS ever, but i have to give it to MGS4. MGS4 is just much longer then the first game (20 hours on my first play through) and there is so much more to do.

MGS2. Played it in Japanese for my first go round on the MGS franchise, but that didn't bother me from fumbling my way through it. Though the semtex was a little annoying since I didn't understand the dialogue.

i would probably say MGS4, the reason being that i feel it was the first time konami nailed the story, gameplay and graphics all in one. Although MGS1 comes straight behind it. It was one of the best games i had ever played at the time but after playing twin snakes i just felt that a few things didnt work and needed to be tweaked and should have been tweaked in twin snakes. Well i loved MGS2 and i thought the story was a real brave move for kojima but i think he pulled it off, but i dont think it can be classed as a solid snake game as you only really get to play him for a lil while. but i think the absense of snake in MGS2 just made you love him even more in MGS4.

I don't have a PS3 yet, so as for the the first three:  MGS1, then MGS3, and never MGS2.  Because MGS2 sucked.  There's only so much Rose and Raiden a person can take... Though I'll totally admit the short Tanker "Chapter" was awesome.  If all of MGS2 was as good as the first Chapter on the Tanker, then that'd be a different story.

I really liked MGS3.  The whole camouflage mechanic, not having a Soliton radar system, and overall relying on the audio and visual cues really gave me a greater sense of sneaking around, and that's what I look for in a MGS game.  Still haven't played MGS4, though.

Metal Gear Solid 4 is my favorite game. I don't think any other game kept me attached to it as MGS4 did.

My favourite so far is 3
    - great boss fights (especially The End)
    - lack of traditional MGS radar (enhancing the sneaking element)
    - great story that puts an interesting twist on the previously established story of Big Boss.

I agree that mgs3 was a great game but Solid Snake never made an appearance in it.  Therefore I'm going to have to pick mgs4.

Tanker chapter in MGS2, It has that 'hero returns' vibe to it. Of course it wouldn't have that without MGS1 beforehand so that deserves a lot of credit.

MGS1 dude. First one I ever played, and easily in the top 5 games I ever played. It's all about the story dude.

Hmm... MGS 1 also, I just have a thing for Shadow Moses, and I miss Liquid Snake.
