It ruins the timing of important jumps. I never had this problem in the older Sonics because I never had to worry about whether Sonic was going to do a different action while jumping. In the past, when Sonic jumps, he jumps!
In Sonic 4, I can honestly say I have no idea sometimes what will happen when I press the jump button. Sometimes when I try to jump normally, he lunges forward instead as if he's about to do a homing attack or something. I have no idea what Sonic is doing. Frustrates me to no end in Casino Street, especially when you have to time your jumps over those flipping cards.

The homing attack needs to die...a painful death
" I don't quite understand what your issue is, Sonic still essentially has the same initial jump, it's just that after that jump he has the homing attack. "After playing with it more this morning, I realized I shouldn't press the jump button while in midair. I still feel this is awkward and makes for clunky controls.
For example, if I wanted to jump immediately after one jump, it would be easier if I could be pressing the jump button while in midair so that when he lands he immediately jumps again. Having to wait until I land to press jump again ruins my timing and is different from how I was successful in the older 2d games.
I finally beat Casino Street though. Perhaps I was just tired last night.

As someone who grew up with Sonic back in the Genesis days, I like the addition of the homing attack. I don't think it's clunky at all.
" @RJay_64 said:The homing attack really hindered my progress in the part where the cards flip in Casino Street. When I have to make careful, quick jumps where timing affects whether or not I land at the right time, I don't want to have to worry about whether I accidentally press the homing attack option." @Gamer_152 said:No offense, but doesn't that kind of indicate that you used to be successful at Sonic games by being cheap? Pressing the jump button in midair in the past helps with my timing. If that's being cheap, well then oh well.
When you get the hang of using the homing attack properly (and stop doing it on accident), you'll likely find that it can be a great tool for maintaining momentum and staying alive. Obviously it'll be tough at first to break your old habit, but I'd say it's worth it.

If I'm about to land and want to make a quick jump immediately at the second I land, I'd rather not be punished for pressing the button a split second early.
" @odintal said:No matter what I'm talking about, it's unfair punishment when there are no enemies around and it still expects you to do a homing attack.first of all is he talking about hammering the button constantly while hes in mid air? or is he talking about hitting the jump button just before he lands. second of all sonic is officially dead. When enemies are around, it's okay, although still unnecessary as the older games did just fine without the homing attack.
" Find a new way to play it. Maybe work on your timing. I like the homing attack. "learning timing in a platformer?
blasphemy!
" @RJay_64 said:I wouldn't. But when I'm about to land on a flipping card and can sense I won't have much when I land, it's easier to be pressing the button as a strategic way of ensuring I'm jumping as soon as I land, before the card flips over again. I'm not saying I would press it a thousand times, but using the old mechanics I'd probably press it 2 or 3 times on the way down just to ensure I pull off the jump before the card flips to the wrong side" @Tarsier said:yea it does matter what youre talking about. why would you just slam the jump button constantly? thats fucking retarded if you did the second thing i described then you have somewhat of a point. " @SethPhotopoulos said:You can have a challenging platformer that requires timing without cheap deaths. I consider deaths as a result of the "lunge" a bit unfair. That's all." I didn't like the controls at first either, but after I actually got used to it, it stopped being a problem. Honestly, all the criticisms seem a bit more on the user-end than the system-end. Don't blame the gameplay mechanics because you can't do platforming. There's plenty of people, myself included, who can beat the game no problem with the same mechanics. It's not perfect, but certainly not unplayable.
