Sonic Unleashed is definitely an improvement over Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) which often had bad gameplay, sometimes terrible controls, an annoying amount of loading screens and a bad storyline. However, Sonic Unleashed has improved on that.

Sonic's levels are often quite linear, on rails and involve running as fast as possible across the level to the goal, avoiding obstacles, killing enemies, collecting rings and sometimes doing quick time events in the process. While this can sometimes be fun, it can get a bit repetitive and can make the first few attempts at a level a case of trial and error. The levels often lack the ability to explore and instead insist on moving forward all the time. Sometimes there are platforming sections and often they work well but there are times when it is flawed.

However, the Werehog levels are the opposite. They involve a small degree of exploration (especially when looking for Sun and Moon Medals) and a lot of fighting hordes of enemies using attack combos. This can also get repetitive too because it often results in you doing the same attacks over again.

Another of the game's annoyances is the fact that you have to collect Sun and Moon Medals to progress to later stages, which can become a pain if you haven't tried to collect them and want to progress further in the story. Luckily, the Medals aren't too hard to find.

There are sometimes sections where the gameplay can turn tedious, often on a section where you can die too easily like some parts of the Empire City Night level or even Windmill Hill Act 3 (Day) which involves grinding along rails and sometimes falling to your death because of a bad jump or hitting spikes on the rails.

The graphics in Sonic Unleashed are pretty good. The locations are very detailed and look varied, and this is one of the strong points about this game. The music can also be good at times too.

Gameplay 2.5/5 - Not bad, but can be a bit linear and repetitive.
Graphics 4/5 - This game is quite detailed when it comes to graphics.
Music 3/5 - Some good music in certain levels.

Final Score - 3/5 - Not bad but not really good either. It has some decent sections but has flaws as well.

How you'll feel about Sonic Unleashed largely depends on how you feel about Sonic the Hedgehog's foray in to the third dimension. In comparative terms, Unleashed is the best foot forward this franchise has had since the Dreamcast, and if you enjoyed something like Sonic Adventure 2, you'll probably enjoy Sonic Unleashed. Of course, there are more and more people these days who are tired of bad 3D Sonic games, and Sonic Unleashed probably won't change many minds contrary. Though it corrects many ...
