Until a thing proves its longevity, I'd hold out on something like this.
Star Trek Online
Game » consists of 6 releases. Released Feb 02, 2010
A sci-fi MMORPG developed by Cryptic Studios and Perpetual Entertainment which allows players to fight amongst the ranks of Starfleet, join the Klingon Empire, or rebuild a Romulan homeworld.
Just bought STO with a lifetime subscription
" @Lind_L_Taylor said:It could happen. I'm sure there will be plenty of bitching & complaining by the GB forum crowd just before release. They're some of the most anal gamers I know." @Gizmo said:That's ignorant. No one's creaming over Star Wars Galaxies because not only is it outdated, it was killed with that patch everyone hates. That in no way symbolizes how The Old Republic will do, two very different games. "" @Heartagram said:This is so over-hyped. I'm sure by the time it shows up, you'll find something about it to hate. I've seen this happen countless times already...<Future Game That Is 1+ Years Away from Now inserted here>...is gonna be the shit! Then after release: Realty != Hype & due to the huge letdown that the perceived game isn't the game they wanted, the majority move on to the next overly hyped game. When will this phenomenon end? I don't hear anyone creaming over Star Wars Galaxies..lol. "" @extremeradical said:tenfold. "" The thing is, I think The Old Republic will be better. "I agree "

Interest isn't that much." @Lind_L_Taylor said:
" @MrKlorox said:A 300 dollar bank loan is a fucking joke. Also one would have to pay interest. "" If I could set it up so I pay out the $300 by paying $15 every month then I think I would. "It's called a bank loan. "
Yeah I've been messing with it the past 20 minutes trying to get it to work. I just left it there in case someone saw it and chimed in. If I look at the picture in my profile under images it gives me the option to "zoom." Then I drag and dropped it down to the comment and got it to work. Now I've trying to figure out how to drag that to a forum. I like some of the features on this site but they make things a huge pain in the ass sometimes.
" @MurderByDeath said:That's awesome.Get off my bridge!" If a lifetime sub is offered for SW:TOR, I will likely be getting it. "
Don't get me wrong though - I absolutely love Star Trek and couldn't really care less about Star Wars. It's just that SW:TOR looks like it's shaping up to be a much better game than STO. Also, BioWare > Cryptic.
I just hope there is enough content to make it worth while. So far, even subpar MMOs have taken more money out of me than a lifetime subscription. So I feel it's worth it.
I see our number is growing. Join us now before it's too late.
P.S: We just had a dance party with Brad on DS9. I can't wait for tomorrow's episode.
Why did this turn into a Cryptic vs. BioWare thread? Jesus. Discussions can be discussions without turning into arguments, people. This is something I feel that the internet has yet to understand.
Personally, while I do enjoy the game from what I've played of it, I just don't think it's worth the lifetime subscription. I paid said fee for Champions Online and really never ended up using it. It's sitting on the Windows partition of my MacBook Pro, taking up space.
The biggest beef I have with Star Trek Online was brought up by the guys on last week's Bombcast -- why is this an MMO? It just feels like it should have been a single-player game. I'm certainly going to be buying this one, but I think I'll stick with a subscription in the traditional sense this go around.
" Fallout MMO FTW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! "Is that actually even happening anymore? I remember hearing that Interplay was working on it before they went tits up, and there's been a rumor that Bethesda's got it running behind closed doors now. Is there anything concrete on this thing, or is it still just speculation?
" @Legend: Oh I'll make it.... I'll be lighting your asses up with heavy disruptors. "Bring it on!!! LOL, I hope we'll be able to go head to head with Klingon players. That would be really awesome. I also heard that all players will be promoted to Admiral at the very end.
After reading this article written by STO's executive producer Craig Zinkievich, I can now confidently say that I made the right decision.
We’ve been working without rest for nearly two years to reach this moment -- the moment when we can begin expanding Star Trek Online in earnest. The years ahead when we get to work directly with you to figure out what we add next to the game, where we fill out content, and what new systems we might add. That's real development. That's live development.
We have years of development left in us and a universe of content still to add. Here’s where it gets interesting... Here’s where you help us figure out what comes next.
I, for one, am looking forward to taking that journey.
And the offer has expired. I was a little concerned five days ago that I had rushed into buying it and that I should've given myself some time to weigh the advantages and disadvantages of paying so much money to get it. I'm really glad I got it when I had the chance, or I would've regretted it otherwise.
Think it's interesting to give an update on this 10 years later. I actually lost access to my "lifetime" account because Atari sold the game to Perfect Worlds and their account system changed, I was not able to regain access to my account even though my email and username haven't changed. I tried to get through to their customer support numerous times but they're useless. $300 down the drain and lesson earned I guess. Learn from my mistakes.
@legend: Oh man! That's brutal!
@legend: That sucks, sorry to hear that. I had over 2,200 hours in Guild Wars 1 and my account got hacked and I was never able to transfer my legacy stuff into Guild Wars 2. But that's small potatoes compared to losing an account you paid so much for.
How much time did you get with the game before all of this happened?
